21.01.2022 SITTING- THE NEW SMOKING HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HEALTH! Our chairs have evolved to be more comfortable to allow us to sit for long periods of time, however, listed below are some of the dangers associated with this comfort. MEDICAL PERSPECTIVE: Research shows that if you sit for 7 hours a day or more, you are twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and 13% more likely to develop cancer. So the dangers are definitely linked to... that of smoking - PHYSIO PERSPECTIVE: Overtime, your muscles adapt to whichever position you adopt most frequently. If this is a slumped posture, your core muscles and spinal extensor muscles weaken, your shoulder and scapular muscles weaken, your thoracic (mid back) spine stiffens up ...the list goes on WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT? 1. Put a post it note on your computer or download a phone app reminding you to stand EVERY HALF HOUR 2. Use a smaller water glass so you need to stand and fill it up regularly 3. Take stairs wherever possible 4. Stand up every time you answer the phone and sit back down (Do 5 sit to stands for every phone call) 5. Regularly do stretches on muscles that have been shortened during sitting (neck stretches found on our page below) 6. Stand up during ad breaks on TV 7. Suggest to your employer about the possibility of stand up desks. We hope you’re standing right now! :)

18.01.2022 A lot of people do not realise how IMPORTANT the shoulder blade is The shoulder blade, otherwise known as the scapular, sits behind your rib cage and makes up one half of the shoulder joint (the other part of the joint being the humerus).... When your arm moves, your shoulder blade has to move as well in order to obtain full movement of the shoulder. However, when someone sustains a shoulder injury or develops a shoulder condition, the shoulder blade sometimes suffers as well, resulting in incorrect movement of it. This can result in pain (e.g. shoulder impingement) or stiffness. Your physio can assess your shoulder blade in order to see whether it may be contributing to your shoulder issues. If so, then the following treatments may be used: Education regarding how your scapular is moving and how it should be Massage Joint mobilisations to free up the scapular Taping Exercises designed to strengthen up the muscles that control the shoulder blade It is sometimes as simple as addressing incorrect movement patterns of the shoulder blade that result in a huge difference in making your shoulder feel % again. If you have been suffering from shoulder pain, please book in with any of our physios.

15.01.2022 Tendinitis, Tendinosis or Tendinopathy WHICH ONE IS IT You may have heard the above terms used interchangeably either by your GP, physio or people in general. But do they mean different things or are they just different words for one condition?... Firstly, tendons are confused with ligaments by some people. While a ligament connects a bone to another bone and is there for extra support of the joints, tendons connect muscles to bone and are essentially the "bridge" between a muscle contracting and a bone moving. Due to this, high loads are placed on tendons on a regular basis, meaning they are susceptible to going though wear and tear which can result in the conditions listed above. They are best summed up as below: Tendinitis = inflammation of the tendon Tendinosis = degeneration and microtrauma of the tendon Tendinopathy = A general umbrella term used for both tendinitis and tendinosis Due to the fact that tendon issues usually present with both inflammation and degeneration, and that the management for both conditions are very similar, the term tendinopathy is now more commonly used. If you have been suffering from tendinopathy, please book in with any of our team.

13.01.2022 Pain is an experience. When a tissue is injured, it sends a message to the brain to notify that they they are presented with something potentially dangerous. The brain then has to answer a very important question ‘how dangerous is this really?’.... In order to respond, the brain draws on every piece of information you’ve collected. So your past, previous injuries, cultural influences, knowledge, stress levels, environment, psychosocial factors the list goes on. The signal the brain sends back to the body is known as ‘pain’. And the ‘pain’ is influenced by all the above factors. Hence, pain and pain management is very complex...

12.01.2022 The colourof your resistance band actually means something Resistance bands are a common go-to-item provided by physios for exercises due to the amount of various exercises you can complete using one band as well as it being easily portable. Meaning no excuses for not doing your exercises ... However, have you ever noticed that there are many colours a resistance band can come in Is this just based on the colour preference of the user or does it actually mean something Well, the colour of a resistance band indicates the level of resistance, meaning that some colours are actually easier and provide less resistance than other colours. At Physio & Beyond, the resistance band colours we use are listed below in the order of easiest to hardest resistances: 1Yellow 2Red 3Green 4Blue Black, silver and gold are other colours that are harder than blue, but are not often prescribed at our clinic. It is also worthy to note that other brands may use other colour order systems, but the one shown above is the most common.
