16.01.2022 The COVID 19 pandemic has affected us all in many ways, one being our normal exercise habits. Whether you kept exercising during isolation or stopped completely, it is important to manage your return to exercise. If you don’t, you may predispose yourself to injury and even more time out of your regular exercise. Here we discuss a few tips for return to exercise. 1. Maintain healthy sleep and nutritional habits During COVID, many of our routines may have changed because we wer...e spending more time in the comfort of our own home. Now that some of us are moving away from work from home it is important to acknowledge how this change in routine may affect us. It may mean we have less time to exercise or impact on our waking times. It might also mean it is easier to go get a bought lunch from the shops which isn’t as good for us. By acknowledging these changes and developing strategies to deal with them, you are less likely to injure yourself. 2. Ease back into activity Regardless of how good you were at exercising during isolation, your fitness levels may have dropped in this time. It is important to accept this and start at an appropriate level. A good starting point is to increase your activity by only 10-25% from what you have done over the last 3-4 weeks. This small increase has been shown to produce changes in fitness while avoiding workload related injury (credit Tim Gabbett). 3. Worst case scenario Despite gradually getting back into exercise and doing all the right things by your body, you still may develop injury. If you do, it is important to address the issue straight away rather than leaving it. Often a week of pain turns into two weeks, then a month, and before you know it the problem is chronic in nature. By getting help early, you reduce the risk of developing chronic issues and can continue exercising more effectively. For any personalised advice on how to safely return to exercise or if you have already felt the effects of injury since returning, feel free to come in and see one of our physiotherapists!

08.01.2022 There is mounting evidence that exercise has a role in falls prevention in people with dementia and Parkinson's disease. A recent review of randomised controlle...d trials confirmed that well-designed exercise programs that safely challenge balance and involve three hours of exercise per week, are most effective for older people living in the general community. Remember to see your physiotherapist if you are not sure about the best approach for you. If you or someone you know is living with dementia or Parkinson's disease, find a physio near you specialising in treatment of older patients or those with neurological conditions. 01.01.2022 Good news! Telehealth consultations have been approved for allied health professionals. This applies to all our Medicare, DVA, NDIS and WorkCover patients. Believe it or not, physios can achieve a lot through a session over the phone or via a video link. We can still assess, diagnose, educate and prescribe home treatments and exercises. So, if you’re in self isolation or are avoiding going out for the time being, it doesn’t mean you can’t be looked after! For more information feel free to contact us on 4417 8900.

01.01.2022 Our calves are a very important but often forgotten muscle group. They function in many ways, from simply propelling us forwards as we walk to jumping, sprinting and changing direction at speed. Calf strength doesn’t only help with athletic performance but is highly important in conditions such as knee pain and plantar fasciitis. Research has been completed showing how many single leg calf raises a healthy person should be able to complete (Herbert-Losier, 2017). How do you fair given the age specific averages? Remember, every calf raise must be good quality.
