20.01.2022 () The ITB is a thick band of connective tissue that is connected from the hip, running along the side of the outer thigh, and attaches right below the knee joint. Due to its attachment points, the band is able to move slightly forward and backwards as our knee bends while walking or running ? ... ITB syndrome is characterised a repetitive overuse injury and is commonly experienced by runners & cyclists Sudden or prolonged activities that involve repetitive knee bending/straightening, cause the ITB to rub over bony structures thus causing irritation and inflammation of the ITB. Additionally, glute muscle weakness may contribute to the development of the syndrome, as the glute muscles are responsible for maintaining correct knee alignment. ? Typical symptoms include: Localised pain at outer aspect of your knee pain with prolonged running pain with going down stairs If you are experiencing the above, you MAY be suffering from ITB syndrome. ? If you believe you are suffering from ITB syndrome, come a see one of our experienced Physios at . 16.01.2022 The average person is prone to be limited in thoracic mid back movement ... Who’s to blame!? We can thank our desk jobs, hours driving & mobile phones! ‘ ? ... The amount you can move your mid back Our body doesn’t work in isolation, & requires our mid back to be mobile in multi directional movements like leaning over to pick up your child, over head exercises in the gym or checking over your shoulder before switching lanes. & ? , Try this at home... Rolling your shoulders forward & hunching your upper back. This is called a Kyphotic Posture. Commonly seen in patients with a sedentary lifestyle & poor body awareness, coupled with fatigue. It’s not ideal but can be hard to avoid at times As for sport performance, we use upper & lower limb movement to execute multidirectional skill, however with thoracic mobility it needs our body to produce 2x the amount of effort from our upper limbs. Look at the skill throwing By placing our arms in a disadvantage we begin to compensate with other areas We need to training time in poor statures & more favorable positions to enhance power output. Spending more time in poor postures (e.g. kyphosis), results in injuries involving the neck, shoulder & low back. ? Simple... Address mobility with specific drills Begin to train the body to withstand poor postures with sport specific resistance training in ideal postures. Make an appointment at -our Physio’s will complete an assessment & treatment involving: Hands on therapy to reset movement patterns Resistance based exercises addressing posture Education on self-mobilising exercises to enhance favourable motion. 10.01.2022 Warmer weather means 1 thing: harder workouts to take off the covid & winter layers. Unfortunately, sometimes harder workouts = new injuries 1 injury that can creep up on us is on known as Proximal Hamstring Tendinopathy (PHT), also known as a high Hamstring Tendinopathy. The name stems from the pain being felt at the bony part of your glutes - a literal pain in your backside - and is characterised by inflammation of the tendon... & ? Simply put, our tendons don't like surprises! With gyms reopened & people going full throttle, our tendons may not be strong enough to deal with the load we put it through. The pain often begins with activities such as newly introduced sprinting, uphill running , or sitting for long periods of time! Sudden increases in these activities place hamstring demand and cause tendon compression ? Typical symptoms include: Localised pain at the pelvis bone in your glutes Pain during and/or after running uphill/sprinting Pain during stretching If you are experiencing the above, you MAY be suffering from PHT. ? If you believe you are suffering from PHT come a see one of our experienced Physiotherapists at . Rehabilitation for such an injury involves proper diagnosis and appropriate strength work to appropriately load the tendon Dont let tendon pain slow your training down!! 01.01.2022 We rely so much on our knees to function when we walk, run, twist, squat or put them in combination! The knee in turn relies heavily on ligaments to keep it together. ... Hence when people put themselves in bad position a POP can be heard that can be a result of a torn ligament! L Medial Collateral Ligament - it’s the ligament on the inside of the knee. With a valgus stress - which is an inward twisting of the knee We see it with soccer, football and twisting sports. Also quite common during the ski season! Assess and run through the appropriate testing to determine how bad the tear is Then we: 1. swelling/tightness and pain 2. the area of injury 3. on how to self manage. Dependant on the tear size usual rehab can be between 2-6 weeks!
