24.01.2022 Howdy Friends! It has been a while since our last post and look how different it is now! We have all adapted to working from home and even learnt to multitask as some children enjoy an early term break. We understand how hard it is to keep the little ones occupied so this week's post is dedicated to the hard-working parents with small children at home. An excellent way to #challenge your child's #movement and #balance is to get them to play a game of #hopscotch! It might sou...nd simple, but hopscotch requires good #concentration, #coordination, #balance and #creativity. It can be played anywhere as long as you have a chalk, inter-locking foam mat squares, hoops or even floor tiles! Best of all, it keeps the children occupied while you focus on finishing off your paperwork or email. A #variation for older children is to throw a stone/bean bag onto one of the squares, skipping the square with the marker on while hopping forwards, and picking it back up again on their way back. Try it and have fun! #stayhome #stayhomeactivity #childsplay #learningathome #imaginationrunwild #enjoy #schoolholidays #newactivity

21.01.2022 Dear Friends, As you can imagine, weve had a few crazy days here in our Unley Clinic trying to re-organise a few things due to the current situation. We will remain open for anyone who require physiotherapy so as to help relieve traffic and patient load in GPs and emergency departments. One of the first things we have done is to set up our Online Physiotherapy Clinic. Thats right! We can now help you online. To request for Online Physio Consultation, just phone or email o...ur clinic. Our receptionists will help you get an online appointment. During these uncertain times, we want to remind everyone that as first contact practitioners, physios can assess and diagnose conditions without a doctors referral. However, some conditions cannot be treated online and may still require face-to-face contact. For these cases, we have implemented additional measures in our Unley Clinic to ensure safety for everyone: 1. Maximum two people in waiting area - Patients who arrive early have to wait outside the clinic or in their car if there is already someone in the waiting area to comply with the 4 square meters rule. Appointments will also be booked 20 minutes apart to allow for cleaning and prevent over-crowding. 2. Bookings by appointment only - please phone us before coming into the clinic. Some conditions do not require face-to-face contact so we encourage clients to phone to discuss your option of Online Physio before coming in. Please help our GPs and emergency health workers focus on critical cases by calling us first. Lets stay strong and help each other in these difficult times. Stay safe Friends. 19.01.2022 Fun Fact Fridays! How cold has it been this week! Today must be the coldest of all! Heres some fun facts to warm up your day. * Lower back pain and Degeneration *... You're experiencing #lowbackpain and had been referred for a scan of your back. It says you have 'degenerative disc disease'. What does this mean? The term '#degeneration' is used very commonly as a diagnosis for low back pain and can be very fear inducing and scary for a lot of people. Just like how we #age on the outside with wrinkles we also age on the inside with our backs. For example, on MRI the spinal discs appear darker in the presence of degeneration. The darkness is an indication that the discs are hardening and this is actually a good thing, as the discs are becoming more resilient and adapting (Brinjikji W et al, Department of Health and Human Services USA, 2015). There are a lot of people over 30 with a messy MRI scan and have no #pain, just like how we have wrinkles and grey hairs and have no pain . Therefore, why should we blame back pain solely due to degeneration. Interesting right? If you would like to know more about how to resolve your back pain or someone that has back pain, please give us a call at 72212970 to book in with our #physiotherapists. #funfactfridays #friday #facts #lowerbackpain #seekhelp #choosephysio #youneedmyphysio #physiofriendau #ridbackpain #gethelp

17.01.2022 Have you ever used a foam roller before? If not, try it! There are several benefits with using a foam roller such as relieving muscle soreness, tightness and improving range of motion. It is a great self-management tool for warming up and cooling down after exercise. It is also a good tool as well if you spend majority of the day sitting down or being sedentary. Physiotherapist Zhi demonstrates how to use a foam roller for your calves.... Lean on your sides, back or front and place the foam roller underneath the targeted area. Support your body weight using your hands and roll back and forth several times. Hold down on sore spots for 20 to 30 seconds to achieve best results. There is a second variation where you place one leg over the other which allow you to apply more pressure onto the calf. You can try both and see what feels best for you. If you are using a foam roller to reduce pain for an injury you should seek professional advice from a physiotherapist. This is general advice and should not replace professional advice. #foamrolling #getrolling #calves #youneedmyphysio #physiofriendau #adelaide #unley

16.01.2022 - Hello Friends! Welcome to Part 2 of the importance of exercises during COVID-19! As mentioned in the earlier, the impact of exercise and it's effects it has on our physical and psychological wellbeing is immense. If you have not seen the previous post, go check it out! Here, Physio Nicky demonstrates 3 easy exercises that you can do at home. The best thing is, it only requires items you have at home! As usual, we strongly advis...e you to seek professional help if you have any concerns or injuries. 1. Sit to stands Without using your hands to stand up and sit down. If you cannot do this, then feel free to support yourself with an arm rest or your lap. Make sure that you are not rocking backwards then forwards to build momentum and stand up, ensure that it is strict. 2. Picking weights from the ground When performing this exercise, make sure your back is controlled and not excessively rounding. Ensure that the object is close to your body at all times. You can use a rice sack or any object that has some weight to it. 3. Using weighted cans for bicep curls, shoulder presses and arm raises Don't let the name fool you! This is the easiest of the three exercises. Just lift the cans upwards in front of you and above you (see video). The important thing here is to make sure that it is nice and controlled. There you go Friends! Three simple exercises for you to do at home. Try it now! #physiofriendau #youneedmyphysio #covid19 #stayathomeexercises #tryitnow #getmoving #stayactive #easyexercises #simple #doitathome #choosephysio #southaustralia

16.01.2022 ! In these videos, physiotherapist Zhi is using a foam roller over his quadriceps, adductors and iliotibial band (ITB). As you can see it does require the use of the arms and shoulders to stabilise and move your body, so if you have issues with your upper body come in to see our physiotherapists for other treatments. #Adductors:... Place the roller vertically with one leg saddling it. Use your arms and spare leg to move your body side to side so that the inside of your thigh rolls over the foam roller. Continue for 30 seconds to 1 minute and repeat on the other leg. #Quadriceps: Place the roller under the mid-thigh. Lift your body weight using your spare leg and two arms. Move your body forward and backward so that the front of your thigh is moving over the top of the roller. Continue for 30 seconds to 1 minute and repeat on the other leg. #ITB: While on your side, place the roller under the outside of your bottom thigh. Use your spare leg and arms to stabilise you and then rock forward and backward along the length of your thigh. Continue for 30 seconds to 1 minute and repeat on the other leg. If you are using a foam roller to reduce pain for an injury you should seek professional advice from a physiotherapist. This is general advice and should not replace professional, case-specific advice. 16.01.2022 During this period, more than ever people are sitting for longer periods of time. The dangers of sitting on a broad scale are numerous and well-known, but what about the joints and muscles themselves? When in a prolonged sitting position the hips and knees are in constant flexion, the shoulders often rounded with a slumped upper back. We need certain exercises to counteract these issues that can lead to hip, knee and back pain. If you have previous injuries to the areas below... come in for a consult so we can assess your issue and give you a more personalised routine. In the meantime, Physios Steve and Zhi came up with the following stretches that you can try at home. Hip flexor stretch: For hip extension, we need to stretch the hip flexors. We do this by getting into a lunge position with the back knee on the ground. Next, push the back hip forward and lean your upper body back to create a long curve from the grounded knee to your spine. You should feel a stretch in the front of the groin. Hold for 30 seconds, repeat 3 times on each leg. Knee Flexion: For the constant knee flexion we need to stretch the hamstrings. This can be done in a variety of positions (standing, sitting, lying) but the most important part is to stretch the hip by bending and keeping the knee straight (like touching your toes). An easy way to do this to position your body through a doorway and place 1 leg up on the door frame. Ensure that both knees are straight. The closer you are to the door frame the more intense the stretch. Hold for 30 seconds, repeat 3 times on each leg (or do both at the same time). Chest stretch: To reverse the rounded shoulders, the pectoral muscles must be stretched. The easiest way to do this is using a doorway. Place either arm on the sides of the doorway and then push your chest past the opening. This should give you a stretching feeling across the front of your chest to both arms. Hold for 30 seconds, repeat 3 times. Perform these exercises on a daily basis to help with your knees, hips and back! Remember, a stretch should be uncomfortable but not painful! #stretches #easy #doitathome #tryitnow #aches #longperiodsofsitting #stiffmuscles #choosephysio #physiofriendau #adelaide #unleyroad

15.01.2022 Finally! The last part to our foam rolling series! Here, physiotherapist Zhi is using a foam roller over his gluteal muscles. As you can see, it requires the use of the arms and shoulders to stabilise and move your body, so if you have issues with your upper body come in to see our physiotherapists for other treatment options. Steps:... 1. Sit on the roller 2. Cross one leg over the other to create a slight stretch in the #gluteal #muscles and bias your body weight onto your arms behind you. 3. Move your body forward and backward so that your gluteal muscles are moving over the top of the roller. Continue for 30 seconds to 1 minute and repeat on the other leg. As always, if you are using a foam roller to reduce pain for an injury you should seek professional advice from a physiotherapist. This is general advice and should not replace professional, case-specific advice. Get #rolling Friends! #youneedmyphysio #foamrolling #timetoroll #physio #choosephysio #massage #glutealmuscles #butt

12.01.2022 - Has anyone tried following our previous videos on foam rolling? If so, that is great! This week, we will focus on the upper back. Here, physiotherapist Zhi is using a foam roller over his lats, rotator cuff, rhomboids, trapezius and erectors. This is particularly useful for those that sit all day, before training and after training. #PosteriorCuff / #Erectors / #Lats... 1. Roller slightly on an angle as shown 2. Left arm up and use your legs to move the body up and down 3. Do it for 30s - 1 minute and repeat on the other side. #Lats 1. Lay on your side 2. Have the roller position just underneath your arm pit area and rest your left elbow on the ground. 3. Use your upper torso to rotate L and R to loosen up the lats 4. Do it for 30s-1 minute and repeat on the other side #Erectors / #Trapezius / #ThoracicExtension 1. Lay on your back 2. Place the foam roller in the upper back region (no lower than where your back starts to curve inwards) with knees bent 3. Both hands behind your neck as shown and extend upwards with just your upperback. 4. Repeat 5 times and move the foam roller higher and keep repeating until you reach your neck. Remember, if you have any shoulder pain doing this or are using a foam roller to reduce pain for an injury, you should seek professional advice from a physiotherapist.
