20.01.2022 Assistive Tech + Moo's = Growing up in the country I have a huge soft spot for the humble cow. Developing the skill to use a walker on uneven surfaces and control a calf is amazing! Finding a motivator is key to making therapy FUN!
19.01.2022 What the human body is capable of is always so inspiring. If there is a will, there is always a way. Have a dream, make a plan, persevere and make it happen.
19.01.2022 A great link and visual on pain. We all feel pain but our knowledge of pain can change the way we experience it.
18.01.2022 Please be mindful that this also applies to wheelchair canopies. The temperatures are rising.
17.01.2022 So to follow on from my last post you might be thinking, well what is a good device to assist my baby's development? I can highly recommend the Baby Gym Bar. The design is sturdy and fun, spacious enough for play dates and for you to personalise. It can be used from birth onwards. Positioning in tummy time, back play, sitting, pull to stand and cruising. Personally this is my baby gift I give to my nearest and dearest. (No affiliation, just an awesome product)
17.01.2022 What a beautiful day to have a play based therapy session in our outside court yard And some hands on therapy for our older clients, challenging muscles they didn't know they had
14.01.2022 I am loving the Rollettes... Dance is movement of the body, it allows expression and communication. Physiologically is stretches, strengthens, maintains range, improves circulation and respiration and to top it off its FUN! Dance routines can be a great way to encourage physical activity, improve body and spatial awareness and wheelchair skills.
14.01.2022 I have had the pleasure of working with children with vision impairment and this kind of Assistive Technology is really exciting to me.
13.01.2022 Play is so important for development FUN. FUNCTIONAL. FUNDAMENTAL.
12.01.2022 Where there is a will, there is a way...
11.01.2022 A big issue I come across is families and schools not knowing how to adapt physical activities to allow children with physical impairments to participate. The link below has some excellent suggestions/adjustments that simple to implement.
09.01.2022 Some great activities for young and old
09.01.2022 There is now a range of Barbies with assistive technology; wheelchairs and prosthetics. They don't apprear to be available in Australia just yet, I will keep you posted.
09.01.2022 PFA and Pathways Therapy Hub will both be participating in PAWGUST with our Puppies to raise awareness and funding for Guide Dogs Australia. We aren't asking for donations, but that you consider registering and participating yourself. The goal is to walk 30 minutes daily for the 30 days of PAWGUST!
08.01.2022 A very clever Dad made a practical crawler to help his little boy with Spina Bifida crawl
06.01.2022 I feel this article should be shared. When it comes to wheelchair etiquette a wheelchair should be considered part of that person. Permission should be sought prior to touching the wheelchair, particularly the canes/ push handles. If you see someone in a wheelchair and they appear to be having a tough time getting somewhere, start a conversation, ask if they need any help to get where they are going.
06.01.2022 A little something for the time poor
04.01.2022 I have been prescribing Assistive Technology for over 7 years now. I have watched the rise of power assist technology in manual wheelchair use, there have been many pros and cons to each item. I have always thought that if the SMART tech in cars could be integrated into an intuitive and adaptive wheelchair the functionality would be improved exponentially. The article talks about decent controlled braking, hill climb power assist, centre of mass stability, system monitoring and maintenance reporting capabilities. Even being able to feed biometric data such as distance travelled, calories burned and weight measurements to you therapist. I will definitely be watching this space.
04.01.2022 I am a very strong advocate for tummy time and against container syndrome. Car seats, particularly the removable capsule has been associated with 3% of infant deaths in the US. The problem is when they are place on a surface other than the base the recline angle of the baby changes. An infants head is approximately 25% of their body weight (adult 6%). Combine a large head with reduced strength, inability to manage airways and the impact of gravity, and you now have a potential recipe for disaster. Always get your baby our of their car seat. The movement is great for developing head control and integrating the vestibular system. Keep your baby close or position flat on their back in a pram to resettle.
03.01.2022 Sometimes Assistive Technology is financially out of reach. Other times clever people find a way to make something to get the job done.
03.01.2022 Parents are rightfully concerned when their children and babies are unwell, in pain or developmentally delayed, but did you know paediatric physiotherapists can... help? They are specially trained to manage and treat a range of children’s conditions. Find out more below. #FiveFacts #ChoosePhysio #PaediatricPhysiotherapy #Paediatrics https://bit.ly/2yFKUaC
01.01.2022 Things have been a little quiet on here over the last couple of weeks and I have the best reason. I have just finished the most incredible two week intensive therapy block for children with cerebral palsy at the Queensland Children's Hospital. The data collected from this Research Project will go toward the justifications for funding needs. I am so incredibly grateful for this amazing experience. I am honestly exhausted but the elation I have felt, sharing in the pure joy as children achieve some complex goals in the relatively short period of two weeks is something I will remember for a lifetime. I have had the pleasure of working with some amazing therapists and university students. I can't even put it into words. I am thankful.
