25.01.2022 On a daily basis I have patients come into the clinic with low back pain. In most cases they come with scans that they have been referred for (usually an x-ray, MRI or CT). In the majority of cases these scans will show findings such as disc bulges/protrusions, end plate narrowing, osteophytes, degeneration, and in some cases fusion of joints. All of these things sound extremely scary! But the truth is in 85% of cases these findings are IRRELEVANT! 25.01.2022 GPs refer patients to physiotherapists more than any other health professionals. Physiotherapist are first contact practitioner’s, which means you don’t need a doctor’s referral to see one, but they often work with doctors and other allied health professionals to help achieve optimal patient outcomes. In addition to doctor’s, physiotherapists receive referrals from surgeons for post surgery rehab, personal trainers to work on a clients form through pain and even denti...sts to assist their patients with jaw pain. 25.01.2022 What happens when we crack our knuckles (or any joint in our body).... The cracking noise is caused by the popping of little gas bubbles in our joints (see the video below for a great explanation). Does it cause arthritis? ... This is unlikely to be true, although very few studies have been conducted with regards to this question. I would just caution people from repetitively forcing a joint into the limit of its movement, as this has the potential to causes ligament damage. The 'need' to crack a joint all the time points to some stiffness in the joint, which is usually cause by muscle tightness. A joint that is stiff and compressed for many years will lead to arthritis. Tight muscles and lots of joint cracking can also occur when there is an underlying instability in a joint. Do you suffer from either of these? The good news is that joint compression/tightness and joint instability are both treatable. Do you have any questions? Feel free to post below or PM us and our physio's will answer them for you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3IYmdy6d4Y&feature=youtu.be

24.01.2022 What is pain? It might seem like an easy question. The answer, however, depends on who you ask. In some ways, pain is the bodys way of telling you something is damaged, but this is not always the case. There are many instances in which an individual may experience a traumatic injury, and feel no pain at all, or, at least not a pain that you would attribute to the traumatic nature of their injury. 23.01.2022 NERVE SLIDES PART 2 Our nerves do not like to be stretched like a muscle. Throughout the various pathways that your nerves travel in your body, they are enclosed in a protective sheath. Nerves are at their happiest when they can smoothy glide and slide within this structure. There are a variety of ways in which an issue can arise and result in your nerve getting stuck to the sheath. A good way to help your nerves glide nicely in this sheath is by doing nerve sliding exerc...ises. Nerve gliding or sliding (sometimes also called flossing) exercises involve increased tension at one joint and simultaneously reduced tension at another with the aim of improve gliding of your nerve and its associated nerve roots. Try this exercise that can assist in restoring more optimal motion of your sciatic nerve, allowing your nerve to slide backwards and forward. Exercise 2 Steps: 1. Lie on your back. 2. Bend your affected leg in towards you until you can clasp your hands together behind your thigh. 3. Hold this position with your leg supported in your arms and slowly straighten out your knee until you reach the point of tension. 4. Do not push further past this point. 5. Lower your foot slightly and lift your head to your chest. 6. Relax your head back as you raise your foot again. Perform this exercise in one fluid movement. Relax and repeat 10-15 times. Check out our post from yesterday for another nerve slider. #physio #physiotherapy #physiotownsville #trythis #livepainfree

22.01.2022 My health elective placement at Physionorth was an incredible experience. I now have a broadened understanding of musculoskeletal conditions and their management, as well as the importance of empowering patients to manage their conditions themselves. I also learned a lot about communication for effective patient care. The communication between admin and health staff, individualised approaches to patients, as well as the trust between patient and practitioner that I observed i...n each appointment is exemplary of the level of care I aspire to provide, and I thank the team for showing me how to do so. Overall, I realised the significance of physiotherapists, massage therapists and exercise education in enabling day-to-day function of so many patients, and developed a deep respect for the role they play in patient wellbeing, rather than simply patient ‘health’. Thank you to the team at Physionorth for welcoming me and encouraging my questions; I would greatly recommend other students to consider doing their health electives here. #physionorth #supportlocaltownsville #townsvilleshines #physiotherapy #physiotownsville #students See more

21.01.2022 There are many misconceptions about sciatic pain. It tends to be a label that is given to anyone with pain down the back of their leg. So what exactly is sciatica and what causes it? This blog will clear up these question for you and give you some tips to manage your pain. Click the link below to read more https://www.physionorth.com.au/sciatic-pain/

21.01.2022 Have you ever caught sight of yourself in the mirror looking a little too much like the hunchback of Notre Dame? I think most of us are guilty of this! Me included! / / / The truth is our standing posture can change a lot throughout out day and even more over our lifespan. Postural dysfunctions are common and arise when our center of mass is not aligned over our base of support (the feet!). This can place excessive strain on muscles, joints..., ligaments and neural structures especially if we repetitively adopt poor posture or sustain it for long periods. In the following pictures we have used plumb line (the red line) as a reference for the midline. Ideally when standing side on to a plumb line, the line should pass: > Just in front of lateral malleolus (outer ankle bone) > Slightly anterior to mid aspect of knee > Mid way through greater trochanter (upper thigh bone) > Mid way through trunk > Mid aspect of shoulder joint (AC joint) > Through the earlobe This ideal, neutral posture can be seen in the third picture. Click the link below to read about how to find what your posture is like and how to fix it. https://www.physionorth.com.au/how-is-your-posture/ See more

20.01.2022 Good pelvic floor activation is important for all women but many arent sure they are activating the right muscles! Below are a few useful cues I commonly use to assist women to correctly activate their pelvic floor. Try these out and see which cue you find works for you best. 1. Draw up through your pelvic floor as if stopping the flow of urine midstream or squeezing the muscles around the back passage as if trying to stop wind from passing. ... 2. Imagine a pebble dropping into a pond. As the pebble drops into the water you see the ripple affect going out around the pebble. Now imagine that in reverse. Imagine the ripples drawing in toward the pebble and the pebble lifts up out of the water. 3. Imagine you are stepping into an elevator. As the doors close, tighten the muscles around the front and back passages. Imagine the elevator going up an draw your pelvic floor muscles up too. If you still arent sure that you are contracting the right muscles, I highly recommend booking a womens health consult so that we can assess further. / / / To book in with Renee, give one of our friendly staff a call on 4724 0768 or book online via our website. #pregnancy #keepingfit #stayinghealthy #nopain #physionorth #supportlocaltownsville #townsvilleshines #physiotherapy #physiotownsville See more

20.01.2022 How cool is this!!!! In this video you will see a small section on the ultrasound that appears to be 'gliding' back and forth. This video is demonstrating the movement of a portion of the median nerve (a nerve that runs from your neck to your hand) located just above the elbow during movement of the wrist in an up and down motion. This is an interesting demonstration that shows movements occurring at another joint can still create movement or 'gliding' of your nerves ...above or below. This is normal and not always relating to pain. In certain circumstances your physiotherapist might suggest some exercises that might encourage a return to normal gliding, however, it is always important to follow your health professionals advice before starting your own exercises without first having an assessment. #physio #choosephysio #supportlocaltownsville #physiotherapy #physiotherapytownsville https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9fONeu0psA

16.01.2022 How to make sure you are doing a healthy squat! 1. Stand with a tall spine, feet should be approximately hip width apart or slightly wider. ... 2. Hinge through your hips and send your bottom backwards as you squat down - think like you are going to sit down onto a chair. This will prevent your knees from tracking too far over your toes which can put excess strain through the front of your knees! 3. As you move through your squat, also ensure that your knees continue to track in line with your 2nd/3rd toes. If your knees track correctly during your squat then you are ensuring your weight/load is getting distributed evenly through your joints. This prevents any hip, knee or ankle pain! If you feel like you need some guidance with your technique, call one of our friendly staff on 4724 0768 or book online vis our website https://www.physionorth.com.au #physionorth #supportlocaltownsville #townsvilleshines #physiotherapy #physiotownsville See more

12.01.2022 Post Pregnancy related poor posture Yes it is a thing and unfortunately I’ve got it. The ironic thing is I’m a physio and I was aware that my posture isn’t great at the moment, but didn’t realize how bad until I saw this pic from a team lunch last week. There are a few factors that have contributed to this problem including: *The hormone relaxin still circulating post baby. This hormone is responsible for relaxing the ligaments in the body and stays for up to 5 mths post ...birth * Increased weight of breast tissue * Fatigue from Baby wearing * My body adjusting to the weight being gone from the front of my body (baby). * decreased abdominal muscle strength and gap from pregnancy The good news is: It can be fixed! There are a few things that really help this problem, including: * A gentle/graduated strength program for my back and tummy *investing in an ergonomic baby carrier with a waist strap * Being aware of where my pelvis, upper back and head are aligned In relation to my feet (ideal is weight centered over mid foot) *Thinking about a string connected to my spine and lengthening that string upwards, elongating my back and neck It’s 15 weeks since the birth of my 3rd child. A beautiful baby girl. So while it’s still fairly early days I feel like I’m ready to start to strengthen up and get fit again. It’s my first day back in the gym tomorrow so wish me luck! Jaquie

11.01.2022 Our first-year health elective placement at Physionorth was an outstanding experience which not only highlighted the crucial role that Physiotherapists and Massage therapists contribute to rehabilitating a patient but also what a well-coordinated, highly competent, and compassionate team, that we followed at Physionorth, can do to empower a patient in taking control of their health and wellness. Seeing a highly individualized and collaborative approach taken with each person ...exemplifies the person-centred care approach to health care that we hope to achieve in the future and has been an overall truly amazing opportunity. We highly recommend other medical students consider doing their health electives at Physionorth and build an understanding of how impactful physiotherapy can be for people regardless of whether the condition is acute or chronic in nature. 11.01.2022 Professional development time in the clinic today. Our bodies are so intricate, there are always new things to learn!

10.01.2022 Are you making any mistakes in your push up form that could be impacting on your shoulders and elbows? Push ups can be a great body weight exercise to help strengthen the muscles of the upper limb and chest. Two of the most common types of push ups are a traditional push up and a triceps push up. In the photos above you can see some of the common mistakes people make when attempting a push up and what postures you want to try to strive for. ... When completing a traditional push up you want to avoid the shoulder blades from creeping up towards your ears. You also want to avoid excessive inward rotation of your hands and forearms and sagging through the back. It helps to think about keeping your neck long, back flat and not allowing your elbows to creep above shoulder height. Tricep push ups often see people sagging through their back, again with shoulders creeping up towards the ears and winging as demonstrated by the arrows and lines on the above picture. You want to aim with elbows pointing down towards your feet, and in close to the body but not ‘glued’ to your side. Once again, think about keeping your neck long and back straight throughout the movement. Please do not conduct the above exercises if you experience any pain. Still having trouble executing a good push up or are you experiencing shoulder or elbow pain? Then we recommend reviewing with your physiotherapist to have a thorough assessment. 09.01.2022 ARE YOU DRIVING WITH CORRECT POSTURE? It is extremely important to have correct posture whilst sitting in the car and something we often forget about. Falling into poor postures can put extra strain onto your muscles, joints and neural system, especially if you are in these positions for long periods. ... If you are experiencing lower back, buttock or leg pain whilst driving, take a look at how you are sitting. Make sure your bottom is sitting at the back of the chair and you feel even between both "sitting bones". It is also important that you maintain a neutral curve in your lower back. Try using a rolled up towel, pillow or lumbar support if you are having trouble with this. If you are experiencing headaches, neck or upper limb pain with driving - check your neck posture. You should feel tall through your spine and should not feel like your chin is pointing forwards. Need an appointment to fix your bad posture? 05.01.2022 Good pelvic floor activation is important for all women but many aren't sure they are activating the right muscles! If you still aren't sure that you are contracting the right muscles, I highly recommend booking a women's health consult so that we can assess further.
