25.01.2022 Can you all please take the time to sign this. RACS Council Exec have voted to join the campaign for #KidsOffNauru, along with AMA, RACP, RANZCP, ACEM, RACGP, A...CRRM, and AMSA. This letter is part of a coordinated strategy involving multiple medical bodies and 180 organisations working on this campaign. The health situation is at absolute crisis point, and the Australian government has lost control with Nauru denying exit visas to severely ill patients, and just today, ordering MSF (the only providers of mental health care on the island) off. We have to get these kids away. Signing this letter will take only 30 seconds and may not seem like much - but will actually make a huge difference. There are sympathetic politicians on both sides, and if the medical community can lay down a moral mandate, we may see genuine change for these kids. Let’s show that surgeons can advocate strongly for public health too - just as our College has just done. There is a link for non-medics. This is a great stretch for the #levatorscapulae a common #source of neck #pain Aim to hold the stretch for 45 seconds each side every hour. This will help reduce muscle tightness and improve neck movement.... STEP 1: Sit upright with both arms to your side. STEP 2: Place one hand over the top of your head while facing forwards and sitting on the other hand to depress the shoulder. STEP 3: Gently pull your head diagonally to the side as if attempting to touch ear to the same side of the chest. 13.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW that there is a growing number of millennials needing surgery for carpel tunnel syndrome secondary to the ‘selfie wrist’?? It’s not just selfies though, but texting too!! How you hold the phone and type can all add to this problem. We’ve also been seeing increasing numbers of the ‘iPhone thumb’, whereby if you keep using your thumb, you will get thumb-based pain, due to joint or tendon inflammation.... The reason more young adults are being injured is due to the way they repeatedly flex their wrists inwards to snap the perfect image of themselves. This awkward movement is an unfavourable position for the wrist and can compromise the carpel tunnel resulting in pain, weakness, numbness or pins and needles in the fingers or arms. What to do?? Stop taking selfies or if you must.. do as @kimkardashian does and hire a personal selfie taker

If you’re struggling to get started with #pullups or if you’re looking for a #pre-activation exercise for #isolated #lowertraps #middletraps #rhomboids #serratusposterior and #lats then this is the one for you. SETUP: Hang from a pull-up bar with a shoulder-width, overhand grip. Keep your shoulders close to yours ears. Your #knees can be bent or straight, but keep your abs braced to avoid swinging. ACTION: #depress your #shoulderblade in a #reverse #shrug motion. Hold for 3-5sec and release slowly. Repeat 10-12reps. TIPS: This exercise involves a very subtle #movement of the #shoulder blades. There should be no flaring of the #ribs and no swinging.

07.01.2022 Loved this! #repost @kaitlin.physio HIPS DON’T LIE #glutemedseries .... As I previously stated, weakness in the gluteus medius muscle often can predispose us to several different injuries. Above are just a few of the many issues that can arise due to weakness in glute med. . 1 Shin Splints : having instability at the pelvis due to weakness in glute med can cause overpronation (excessive flattening of arch) at the foot. Due to the fact that tibialis anterior and posterior (shin muscles) cross the inside of your foot and attach underneath, overpronation will put more stress on these muscles. 2 Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome : this is an umbrella term for dysfunction around the knee cap, where it glides in the groove of your thigh bone. With weakness in the glutes, patellar tracking can be affected as the knee will often repeatedly fall into valgus with activities such as running or jumping. 3 Low Back Pain/Sciatica : if the hip is unstable due to weak glute med muscles, the low back muscles, such as Quadratus Lumborum, must work extra hard to attempt to stabilize. Additionally, people may experience sciatica (pain in the low back/buttock which often radiates down the leg and into the calf). The sciatic nerve often runs either through or behind a muscle called piriformis. If glute med is weak, the piriformis (another hip abductor, and also a lateral rotator) will over compensate and can compress the sciatic nerve 4 Plantar Fasciitis : weak glutes can cause increased valgus (knee falling inward) at the knees as a result of instability at the hips; therefore the tibia (shin bone) falls into internal rotation (rotated inward toward the body) causing excess pronation (flattening) of the foot, which puts more stress on the plantar fascia 5 IT Band Syndrome : as the hip drops due to the inability of glute med to keep the pelvis neutral, the ITB gets tensioned over the greater trochanter (bony prominence on your upper thigh bone), causing it to tighten over the the lateral femoral epicondyle (at the knee). . I did a story post about this a while back and called it hip prying- same thing.... . If you have knee or hip issues, this might be a goal. Your meniscus or hip labrum pathology might not love this. Proceed cautiously at first. . There is also a lot of foot/ankle movement required here. Try to to keep your foot flat... you’ll see what I mean. Be careful pushing deep on this at first, as it requires a lot of mobility. . Use this to find where your optimal position might be for a deep squat. The Alter G uses patented Differential Air Pressure technology to gently and precisely reduce gravitational forces on patients, allowing them to move without pain or interference to natural gait mechanics. Pretty much, the machine can alter the percentage of body weight the patient is putting through their lower limbs. @physiophi and @better_by_miles patient Neville is the perfect candidate for utilising this machine. He is learning to walk unaided again after a workplace accident to the right lower limb.
