22.01.2022 Your Sunday evening reminder as we go in to summer and warmer weather Do you struggle with body image? It's something that cripples both women, men and children globally on a daily basis. Those struggling with body image feel there is something wrong with them because they don't look a certain way.... There is nothing wrong with you. There is something wrong with society. Social media has seen the rise of 'selfies' and photoshopped images that portray an unrealistic view of reality. While social media can be damaging to self esteem and body image, it can also depend on who you are following. Follow people that make you feel happy, empowered and normal just the way you are. Here are some great people we love following @amysheppardpie @comfortableinmyskin_thelabel @shopchristinastephens @bodyimagemovement @activetruth PS- if you have a body, you have a bikini body

21.01.2022 How are you going?... Its a question we ask eachother like a reflex but do we actually listen for the response? When we are asked, do we actually respond with the truth or just say "good thanks"?... Its ok to not be ok. Especially during these times and especially in Victoria. A lot of people are experiencing anxiety, grief, depression and sadness at this time. A lot of people were experiencing these emotions before COVID hit.. Having a mental illness does not define who you are or how people should treat you. It may change how you treat yourself, so remember to be kind and go easy on you. Each day comes with its own challenges and experiences. Today is @ruokday Remember to ask your family and friends how they really are today and every day. And if you arent ok, remember there is always help available

21.01.2022 POST-NATAL CHECK So youve just had a baby- congratulations!! Its such an exciting and special time. Youre learning how to breastfeed, how to cope with sleep deprivation and how to bond with your new bub.... But how are you doing? A lot of the time, especially early post natal, the focus is on the baby and the babys health. The mother, whos body has been through HUGE change, gets forgotten. Thats why its important to see BOTH your GP and a Womens Health Physiotherapist post-natally. One does not replace the other because we look at different things! Your GP review will normally be at 6 weeks post-natal and it will involve assessment of the baby and yourself. This appointment, however, does not normally involve a pelvic floor assessment or a screening for safety of return to exercise. A post-natal check with a Womens Health Physiotherapist will occur at 4-6 weeks (sometimes earlier if people are having issues) and involves the following: A thorough assessment of how your pregnancy was, how the birth was and how you are recovering A full body musculoskeletal screen A pelvic floor muscle assessment Assessment for Pelvic Organ Prolapse Diastasis recti (DRAM) assessment Screening for return to exercise Once you have a baby you are always post-natal, so if you never had your post-natal assessment early on its never too late to start Our Womens Health Physiotherapist, Lauren, is available for post-natal assessments at our Geelong clinic and our Leopold clinic within @thebirchroom_

20.01.2022 Bladder leakage... Urinary incontinence, also known as bladder leakage, is when there is accidental or involuntary loss of urine. You may have heard it termed "light bladder leakage" or "LBL". This term was developed by a sanitary product brand and through marketing is portrayed to be "normal".... While urinary incontinence is common after having children, with age and at times during pregnancy, it is far from being normal. I was flicking through daytime TV yesterday (I was home doing an online Physio course ) and came across the morning show on Channel 7 where they were promoting @alwaysdiscreetanz womens incontinence products. The product ambassador @julesrobinson82 was asked how she manages her incontinence. In conjunction with using pads and liners, she mentioned that she sees a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist. This is so great to hear and an important message to be sending Women (and men) need to know that while incontinence is common, its not normal and it can be successfully treated. Simply using a pad and trying to forget about it is not the answer. Seeking the help of a Womens or Mens Health Physiotherapist is important for determining an accurate cause of your leakage and developing a long-term management plan. Sanitary products should still be used when needed and you should feel no shame in using them. Any questions about incontinence? Im all ears -Lauren

20.01.2022 Ever wondered what the @physiopodco name means?? Now you know... Physio and Podiatry working collaboratively.

20.01.2022 A real pain the leg Shin pain can take many forms. It can be a bone or soft tissue injury. It can come on as soon as you start running then go away, or it might start to hurt in the back half of your run. It will often linger into the night and can be sore to touch and hop. ... Good news is it can be managed. Ruling out stress fracture is an important part of the assessment process. Then its down to finding the cause. Is it the foot? Is it strength? Is it training load? Is it running technique? Is it diet? Is it bone density? All these need to be looked at. The Collective Body Consult @physiopodco can go through all this and more to get you back building your kms!

18.01.2022 PREGNANT MUMMAS So you've heard that it's not good to lay on your back while pregnant. But do you know why? And from what date onwards? As the uterus grows with pregnancy, the weight of the enlarged uterus can obstruct venous return (blood flow) to the baby when you are laying supine (on your back).... This occurs due to restriction of the inferior vena cava, which reduces cardiac output and uterine artery flow. The new RANZCOG Guidelines from 2020 advise women to avoid sleeping and exercising supine (on your back) from the second trimester. That is from WEEK 13 onwards. Worried that you're waking up on your back? That's ok if you haven't gone to sleep in that position. Just roll over on to your side. Research tells us that the position women first go to sleep in has the longest duration overnight (eg. If you go to sleep on your side you will spend most of your time there, even if you wake up on your back). Cronin et al in 2019 assessed the safety of sleeping in supine during pregnancy in the 3rd trimester (after 28 weeks) and found the following: Supine going to sleep position is independently associated with later stillbirth Supine going to sleep position had a 2.6 fold increase in odds of late stillbirth compared to other positions Right side laying had no higher risk than left side laying (both are safe) It is important to note that laying supine is not the only risk factor for late stillbirth. Stillbirth may result from: 1) A vulnerable baby (eg. Small for Gestational age) 2) An adverse maternal factor (eg. Maternal obesity) 3) An additional stressor (eg. Reduced uterine blood flow from supine sleep position). If you are concerned about anything during your pregnancy, consult your obstetrician, midwife or GP. 17.01.2022 FACE MASKS// If you were in the clinic today you would have noticed that we were wearing face masks. We are well and are not symptomatic of COVID-19 but are following guidelines by the Australian Physiotherapy and Podiatry associations. These guidelines, effective as of this afternoon, are as follows:... "Effective immediately ALL health care workers in Victoria must wear a level 1 or type 1 disposable surgical mask in public-facing areas, particularly where adequate social distancing is not possible. Patients should also wear a face covering". As outlined, we will require patients to wear a face covering from tomorrow onwards. This can either be a disposable/reusable mask or a scarf. If you have neither, then we will provide you with a disposable mask. We understand masks make us look different and even "scary" to some. Rest assured we are the same, friendly people and your health is our priority. Contact us with any queries Lauren + Luke

15.01.2022 #Repost @joanna_macmeikan A few years back there was a Reddit thread that went viral. A girl (well call her Jane) was hiking with 3 male friends when her period arrived, in full force, 4 days early. She immediately started panicking, and dropped back behind the others.... One of the boys, Dave, noticed her lagging behind. He dropped back with her and asked if she needed to pee. She said no, that wasnt it. Period issue? he then enquired. She nodded. Dave the Period Fairy called ahead to the other guys telling them Jane had scraped her arm and needed a little first aid, but they should keep going on ahead and set up for lunch. He then whipped out a selection of period products (the good kind, said Jane) and some wet wipes. Incredulous, she asked why he had these things in his backpack. His answer was that hed been hiking with women for years and knew all about it. He then instructed her to do what she needed to get on top of the situation, but not before slapping a giant Bandaid on her arm to go along with his cover story. Dave set the Internet on fire. He was a hero. Dave the Period Fairy. Other guys commented on the thread asking which period products constituted the good kind so they, too, could be Period Fairies. Onya fellas. Big ups. Im a big fan of Dave and his work, he handled the shit out of that situation. But heres the thing: If Jane had been thirsty, shed have said: Hey guys, I need a drink! If Jane had been hungry, shed have said: Hey guys, I need a snack! If Jane had been out of breath, shed have said: Hey guys, I need a sec to catch my breath! Menstruation is a normal, necessary part of female physiology, and it is my fervent hope that one day (soon) all girls and women who find themselves in Janes situation will be able to say: Hey guys! I just got my period. Anyone got a handkerchief theyre not particularly attached to? At which point Dave the Period Fairy could still come to her rescue, but the need for secrecy and embarrassment is nowhere to be found #normaliseperiods

15.01.2022 Womens Health and your Feet Yes #womenshealthweek2020 is awareness about everything womens health, that includes the feet. Here are 3 common issues Women can have with their feet ... 1 Bunions - Seen a lot more in women than men. There are many reasons for them to develop. Narrow fitting footwear is a big contributor. Early intervention is very important to prevent it getting bigger. 2 Corns- Those painful bits of hard skin under the feet, on top and between toes are very common in all ages, not just Nannas Podiatrists can remove these easily and then reduce the pressure causing it. 3 Mortons Neuroma - Again narrow shoes can be the culprit. Numbness to the lesser toes and pain under the ball of the foot from nerve irritation and thickening. Good news is you dont have to wear wide ugly shoes to help the pain. Improving optimal foot function is a good start. Dont forget your feet when considering your health. You dont realise how important they are to your health until they impact your health. A Podiatrist can help.

14.01.2022 Pain under the heel This is a very common thing we hear in the clinic. If you google it, good chance the first thing that comes up is Plantar Fasciitis. This is by far the most common diagnosis for heel pain but by no means the only diagnosis. ... There are at over 20 possible causes for pain under the heel. These can be soft tissue, neurological, bone, vascular or metabolic in nature. Its important to get the right diagnosis as the symptoms can be the same but management may different depending on the diagnosis. If pain under the heel has been persistent and not resolving with treatment, it might be time reevaluate and investigate further.

13.01.2022 Why you might ask? Put simply, when your body recognises that something is wrong (like a painful foot) the body will go in a protective mode to tell you... Hey buddy! There is something up with that heel! Better not walk on it. ... This is when you will start to walk or run a bit differently to get around the sore heel- this is a compensation movement. This new compensation movement, or limp, can now overload something else. Like one of your knees, a hip or the lower back to name a few. This can slowly snowball into a bigger problem, more so than the original pain. The moral of the story is to get the original issue addressed sooner rather than later so you’re not fighting an injury on two fronts.

13.01.2022 AKA heel drop, heel pitch, stack height etc. It is considered the difference in sole height between the front and back of the shoe. So if you measured the sole at the heel and it was 15mm and the sole at the ball of the shoe is 7mm the heel height, stack, pitch or drop is 8mm. Does it matter? ... Kind of but not really. It really depends on what you do, who you are and what you want to achieve. There are good arguments for and against having a heel height vs. no heel height. Current research on the topic has shown there is no significant benefit either way in terms of performance and and injury risk across general populations. However, there have been some studies showing changing heel height all of a sudden can lead to injury. So if youre considering going for a zero drop shoe or a maximalist shoe, take care and transition slowly. It really comes down to what floats your boat. If its comfortable and you can get out and run, wear them. Obviously changes may need to be made if pain is part of the equation but it may not mean changing the heel height.

10.01.2022 I think we could all do a bit more of this at the moment... Meditation and mindfulness have SO many benefits for our bodies, both physically and mentally. Lowers heart rate and blood pressure ... Decreases stress and anxiety Decreases pain Promotes relaxation via the Parasympathetic nervous system Switches off our fight or flight (sympathetic nervous system) Improves mental clarity Improves mood Your mind is like a muscle We have to regularly strengthen it in order for it to function optimally. Each time you meditate, no matter how long, adds to the strengthening and rewiring of the brain. Coronavirus is causing a lot of angst and stress for people at the moment. 10.01.2022 PERIODS Access to sanitary products is a right, not a privilege. Period poverty is very real in Australia, especially right now during COVID-19.... Those experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence or doing it tough have to make the difficult decision of buying pads/tampons or buying food to feed themselves and their children. Everyone deserves to be afforded the dignity that so many of us take for granted. Toilet paper or socks are not a pad. For the month of August, we will be donating $10 from every Initial Womens Health Physiotherapy Appointment to @sharethedignityaustralia This amazing organisation assists those in need through collecting thousands of period products and distributing them directly to charities across Australia. We will also have a collection box in our clinic where you can donate packets of unopened pads, tampons, period underwear, incontinence pads and menstrual cups You can also visit any @woolworths_au store where you will find a @sharethedignityaustralia box to donate

07.01.2022 CHILDRENS FEET Flat feet in children is very normal. From birth through to toddler age, their feet will look flat.... At that age they are predominantly cartilage withvery little bone and also still maintain some fat tissue under and around the foot. They are loose and flexiblewhile they quite literally "find their feet" as they learn to walk. By school age more bone has formed a more structured foot and they will have been walking for several years so more muscle tissue will have developed providing strength to the foot. The developmental milestones of childrens feet can vary from child to child. If you are ever concernedabout your childs feet, our Podiatrist has years of experience working with children of all ages We can assess and give you the right advice about footwear and if any management intervention may be needed #physiopodco #kidsfoothealth

05.01.2022 Victoria, weve got this As Melbourne goes in to Stage 4 lockdown and regional Victoria (including Geelong) in to Stage 3, most of us cant help but think weve time travelled back to March. While it seems similar, its different this time. Weve done lockdown 1.0 and got through it. We were able to adapt and become resilient when faced with such uncertainty.... While we dont know for certain when this virus will end, we do know that supporting each other (virtually) will help. Were told regularly via the media to wash our hands, practice coughing/sneezing etiquette and wear a mask. But what other things can we do to boost our immune system and improve our mental health? Get some sunlight: Vitamin D is produced in your skin in response to sunlight. Vitamin D helps fight disease, reduce depression and boost weight loss. If youre unable to get regular vitamin D, consider taking a supplement. Take a look at your diet: when we become stressed and anxious, most of us turn to fatty or sugary foods. While they taste nice at the time, they arent helping your immune system. Ensure your diet is high in fruits and vegetables, as well as protein to give you energy. For more diet advice, contact our in-house dietitian Madeleine @thenourishededit Move your body: exercise has so many benefits for our health and well-being. When you exercise your brain releases endorphins, your happy hormones, improving your mood. It also helps to reduce your blood pressure, strengthens your immune system and stabilises your blood sugars. Contrary to what you might read on Instagram, theres not one exercise thats better than the other. Just move. Whether thats walking around the block, doing some stretches, lifting weights or doing yoga. Strengthen your mind muscle: during times of stress and uncertainty, the mind can become anxious and depressed. The thoughts in our head can become all- consuming and create a false sense of reality. Practicing meditation and mindfulness has been proven to strengthen our mind and reduce feelings of anxiety, depression, overwhelm and pain. A great app to guide you is @calm Were all in this together

03.01.2022 The "knack" - what's that?! The "knack" is a well timed pelvic floor contraction that can be performed before coughing, sneezing or lifting to reduce incontinence. Quickly lifting and holding your pelvic floor like this before an event with increased abdominal pressure (eg. coughing, sneezing, lifting, laughing) can help to reduce incontinence and reduce movement of a pelvic organ prolapse.... How to do it: 1 Squeeze and lift your pelvic floor (imagine you are trying to stop passing urine and wind) 2 Hold this contraction 3 Cough/sneeze/laugh 4 Relax the pelvic floor down Having trouble squeezing the vagina like you're trying to stop passing urine? It's tricky. If you can't do this part, just focus on the posterior cue (like you are trying to stop passing wind or squeezing the anus). You can perform the "knack" every day during moments of increased pressure. This will help strengthen your pelvic floor but as always, please see your local Women's or Men's Health Physiotherapist to be properly assessed if you have any pelvic floor issues

03.01.2022 Womens Health Week Today marks the start of the @jeanhailes Womens Health Week! An event aimed at raising awareness of a range of womens health conditions. Todays topic is all about the wonders down-under ... Do you know the difference between the vagina and the vulva? Most people dont (men and women!) The vulva is often mistakenly referred to as the vagina but they are two very different structures. The vagina is the internal channel that connects the uterus to the outside of the body (refer to pic 2 ). The vulva is the name given to the external female genitalia. This includes the inner and outer labia, the clitoris, the urethral opening and the vaginal opening. Contrary to popular belief, the vulva can be many different shapes, sizes and colour. Every vulva is different and perfect in its own way (refer to pic 3 ). Its important to get to know your vagina and vulva. Understanding what is normal for you allows you to notice when things may become abnormal. This can be changes to skin, irritation, discharge and pain. Using a mirror is a great way to start. Treating vaginal and vulva conditions early is vital and can prevent any long term problems. During COVID-19 a lot of women are putting off their routine health checks, like a cervical screening (papsmear). Its important to KEEP these appointments. Your health is imperative and cant be put on hold. Womens Health Physiotherapists also perform vulva and vaginal assessments regularly.
