18.01.2022 ACCREDITED EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGIST - Tiarna Bateman Accredited Exercise Physiologists are university-qualified allied health professionals. They specialize in designing and delivering safe and effective exercise interventions for people with chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities. Services delivered by an AEP are also claimable under compensable schemes such as Medicare and covered by most private health insurers. When it comes to the prescription of exercise, the...y are the most qualified professionals in Australia. Whether you’re living with a chronic condition, illness, injury or just want some advice on how to exercise right for your specific needs, Tiarna can help! HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT FROM PHYSIOTHERAPISTS? Distinguishing between a physiotherapist and an exercise physiologist can be quite difficult, as the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Both can work within a broad scope of practice so it’s only natural that confusion exists. Although there are similarities, they aren’t the same thing. Both are allied health professionals who have done a minimum of 4 years’ study at university, however there are differences in their areas of expertise. Physiotherapists generally focus on the diagnosis of acute injuries as well as helping to treat pain and restoring function. Exercise physiologists use evidence-based movement and exercise intervention for chronic disease prevention and management, musculoskeletal injuries and weight management. Exercise physiologists often work as part of a team of doctors, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals to ensure the best results for their clients. Tiarna is pilates trained and has special interests in using exercise as medicine for mental health conditions, weight loss, diabetes and osteoporosis. Tiarna is available at Physio Shop on Tuesday afternoon and Friday morning.

12.01.2022 DO YOU SUFFER FROM HEADACHES? Nearly half the population suffers from headaches and about 15-20%of those headaches stem from the neck. They are called cervicogenic headaches. If the pain begins in the neck and the back of the head and radiates towards the front of the head, there is a good chance that you have a cervicogenic headache.... Typically, people who have cervicogenic headaches experience a headache accompanied by neck pain and stiffness. Certain neck movements can provoke cervicogenic headaches. People may confuse cervicogenic headaches with migraines and tension headaches, both of which can cause neck pain. Cervicogenic headaches result from structural problems in the neck and are often due to problems with vertebrae at the top of the spine, called the high cervical vertebrae. A dysfunction in these areas can trigger pain signals that travel to your trigeminocervical nucleus (TCN) in your brainstem. This information is then transmitted into your brain and interpreted as a headache. The good news is that by fixing your neck problem, your neck headache can be alleviated. At PhysioShop we have Physios with post graduate training that are experts in treating headaches. So what can Physio do? - Joint mobilisation and manipulations to improve neck range of movement and relief of pain from stiff joints. - Muscle release through massage or dry needling as tight muscles can contribute to limited joint movement as well as refer headaches. - Exercises including stretches, strengthening and endurance to improve muscle control and possibly reduce frequency of the headaches. A recent systematic review has shown physiotherapy management is effective in reducing pain and functional disability in people who have headaches due to referral from their neck. 03.01.2022 Ankle sprain Why it’s important to rehab an ankle sprain: Up to 75% of initial lateral ankle sprains result in repetitive sprains and chronic complaints. Research has shown the use of manual therapy, strength and balance (proprioception) training can improve function and decrease the risk of re-injury (Hubbard & Wikstrom, 2010). At Physioshop we have expert physios who have experience working at all levels of sports, up to Olympic gold medallists, that can help you rehab you...r ankle injury and bring you back to your desired level of sports. Mechanism of injury: fast changes in direction especially on uneven surfaces, jumping and landing with the ankle rolled in. Cause of pain: most common ligament to be sprained in the ankle from an inversion (rolling in) injury is the ATFL (anterior talofibular ligament) on the outside of the ankle Rehab required for an ankle sprain: - Ice, compression and elevation to reduce the swelling and pain which will promote healing - Improve ankle range with manual therapy and exercises - Strengthen the muscle around the ankle to help support and encourage stability - Proprioception training balance/ankle stability training to help prevent re-injury Further reading: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3781861/
