24.01.2022 [WISE WEDNESDAY] Did you know that full thickness ACL ruptures heal on their own in the majority of cases? And yes, you can return to sport following a complete ACL rupture without having ACL reconstruction surgery Previous thinking suggested that a ruptured ACL would not heal on its own. But, this is far from the truth, with multiple studies demonstrating that in the majority of cases, a fully ruptured ACL will heal on its own without surgery. ... To promote healing and full return to sport without ACL reconstruction surgery, it is recommended that the knee is given at least 3 months to settle and a graded strengthening program is commenced rather than rushing to surgical repair. This is the best management currently and strongly supported by the research. In certain circumstances, surgery may be required following the 3-month strengthening program. However, long-term outcomes have been demonstrated to be better with a 3-month rehab period rather than immediately opting for surgery. Rehabilitation and exercise can actually become a permanent treatment. There are numerous studies demonstrating that professional footballers, snow skiers and basketballers etc (all pivoting sports) can successfully return to an elite level without having an ACL reconstruction. If you have any questions, we would love to chat to you further about your options following ACL injuries. Were always happy to discuss the current best management for all conditions. #wisewednesday #advice #education #evidencebasedpractice #evidencebased #management #acl #injury #rehab #strengthprogram #physio #physiotips #physiotherapy #physiowest

22.01.2022 [FUN-FACT FRIDAY] You are strong and can change your shoulder pain Pain is a protective mechanism produced by the brain to act as the bodys alarm bells and protect us against damage. Often these alarm bells can start ringing even when nothing is being damaged. ... Sometimes our muscles, particularly in the shoulder, can be over-sensitive to a movement and pain is the result even though no damage is occurring. 22.01.2022 [MOVEMENT MONDAY] Can I return to cycling post total knee replacement Cycling may have been a form of exercise you enjoyed prior to surgery.
