17.01.2022 Mid West-Gascoyne District Superintendent Roger Beer joined officers from Yalgoo Police at the Pia Wadjarri Remote Community School for the final assembly of te...rm 2. The occasion acknowledged NAIDOC Week which was to have been held 5-12 July before being postponed to 8-15 November. There were also tributes to mark the retirement of prominent Elder and Aboriginal and Islander Education Officer (AIEO) Julie Ryan, as well as the unveiling of a statue created by the school principals husband. The Wadjarri Warrior Statue has been named Idawarra by local elder Lenny Merry. This is the Wadjarri name for Mt Murchison. AIEO Julie Ryan officially opened a newly established bush tucker garden, before those present were given a tour where they were able to see firsthand a number of sustainability initiatives employed at the school. Recycling, the growing of fresh produce, aquaculture and the nurturing of orphaned kangaroos are all important community initiatives. The day culminated with some traditional Aboriginal cuisine of kangaroo and crocodile, Asian flavours and an assortment of locally grown produce. The school assembly followed and included the presentation of awards. Yalgoo OIC Sergeant Michael Gill said it was a significant day. Everyone enjoyed being part of the celebrations, he said. The efforts of the school staff and students are to be congratulated, and we wish Julie all the best in her retirement. Were also reminding everyone that as the region opens itself up to the wildflower season and travellers may be drawn this way, its important NOT to enter the Pia Wadjarri Aboriginal Community or any Aboriginal communities which fall under the COVID-19 restrictions. **Thank you and credit to Brett Hiscock - CSIRO for the photographs**
