11.01.2022 What do you think playing an instrument by ear really means? . It’s a broad concept and it can get many different definitions and get really confusing. So here’s my favourite way to explaining this. Music is a language. And playing by sheet music is the same as what an actor does on stage. The words are not theirs, the ideas, the plot neither the message. Nothing wrong with that. It just doesn’t work for me. ... Playing by ear is what we all do when we engage in conversation. Our words are not pre-established by someone else. We speak our ideas, using the words we choose to favour in that specific moment. That’s always been a very seductive proposition for me.
