09.01.2022 A sharing on: "My Experience with The Work of Byron Katie New Year’s Mental Cleanse I stumbled upon The Work of Byron Katie, but it felt like I was guided to f...ind it. I had been reading through The Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz to find a quote on which to meditate while practicing yoga. I grow more quickly when I set an intention for my practice. The quote I found was, Suffering is optional. Struggling through yoga after taking a hiatus felt like torture, when I used to love it so much. Meditating on this quote made me appreciate the struggle to hold a pose again, and I slowly began to relax into all the tension, watching it slowly melt away. Finally, I could practice with a smile on my face again. After yoga class that day, I picked up an LA Yoga magazine in hopes of finding yoga events in LA. I wanted to become more involved in the yoga community, but what I found was the New Year’s Mental Cleanse. I had previously looked up a year-long training program in mindful counseling and decided that I would begin reading the curriculum. There, on the list of recommended books was Loving What Is by Byron Katie, only I had no I idea that she was the author. After finding the New Year’s Cleanse in LA Yoga, I looked up Byron Katie and read the words, author of Loving What is and believes that suffering is optional. I was blown away. It seemed to me that I had been following bread crumbs to this website all along. My experience with the Mental Cleanse was very powerful. The first day, I witnessed the deep work of others. I sat in the audience as Katie asked individuals who were willing to share to sit in the hot seat. They read their Judge Your Neighbor worksheets, bared their souls and received invaluable gifts: insights that seemed to shake the very foundation of their identity and allow so much light into their souls. It was as if they had been pulled out of the ocean unconscious, received mouth-to-mouth, and gasped for air, finally recovering their lives. It was so intense that the tension in my body increased and I couldn’t sit still. The muscles around my neck and shoulders became so tight. Eventually, I began to breathe, stretch, and open my heart to hold space for those sharing: breaking down beliefs that had held them hostage for years, some since childhood. I decided to start a worksheet. On the second day of the cleanse, it happened. The moment is too fresh to share here, but I will say that I sat with a very compassionate man for what seemed like an hour. We dove into my first memory of feeling unsafe and infused it with love and compassion. I re-imagined that moment. Gradually, my memory changed from a memory of fear to a memory filled with empathy, self-love, love for others, tenderness, forgiveness, and affection. I will never be the same because a deep belief that hurt me for so long was transformed that day. I left the event early because I felt that I wasn’t able to be as present anymore. I needed to let the experience solidify. I needed food, and I needed a nap. Keep in mind that this is New Year’s Eve. I got home at 5:30pm had a great meal, painted my nails in preparation for the festivities, and knocked out while waiting for them to dry. When I came to, it was 11:51. In my PJs and with wild hair, I rushed out the door, hopped into my car, and raced against time to my aunt’s house, arriving just as the firecrackers went off and guests yelled, Happy New Year. I made it! Not one person looked at me sideways. All I saw were elated expressions. I was enveloped in endless hugs, feeling so happy to celebrate the birth of the New Year with loved ones. When I told my aunt that I had fallen asleep after the cleanse she said, Well mija, you need to do what’s important. The rest of the night was equally wonderful, as I karaoked at the home of my other lovely aunt. Ah, such a good time. I felt close to truth before the Mental Cleanse, but now I feel like I am swimming in it. I recommend The Work. Happy New Year.
