02.01.2022 The new Cruella movie worries me and, no, it's not because it's about the lady that wants to make dogs into coats. It's about the future of the dogs themselves.... Dalmatians are one of the most energetic dog breeds you can own. They are stubborn, impulsive, counter-surfing, cat-chasing, speckled blurs. They require special diets to prevent the formation of urinary stones and are predisposed to deafness, allergies and skin irritations. They are so clingy that they're often referred to as "Velcro dogs" and there's a running joke among Dalmatian owners that "they only shed once a year - their shedding period just lasts 365 days". A lot of people in the 80s-90s didn't know these things before bringing a Dalmatian home after seeing them on film: "Following the re-release of the animated 101 Dalmatians movie both in 1985 and in 1991, the public, enamored by the adorable on-screen puppies, wanted one of their own. Without hesitation, thousands of American families purchased a member of the breed and eagerly brought it home. As a result, the annual number of Dalmatian puppies registered by the American Kennel Club (AKC) skyrocketed from only 8,170 animals to a staggering 42,816. However, in a turn of events, Dalmatian ownership then nosedived starting in 1993. Equally as impressive as their initial surge, Dalmatians now showed the most abrupt decline of registrations of any breed in AKC history. As people became more aware of the demands of the Dalmatian and as their trendiness expired, interest in the dogs waned and then died. Owners unhappy with their pets quickly got rid of them and moved on as if nothing had happened." (https://soapboxie.com/social-/The-Dalmatian-Syndrome-Part-2) Thousands of Dalmatians were left in shelters to die; An unintended Dalmatian genocide. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't rush out and buy a dalmatian after watching Cruella/rewatching 101 Dalmatians. Don't let your friends or family members impulse buy one, either. Do your research before bringing one home! They're wonderful dogs but they are definitely not a good fit for everyone. (Indigo thanks you for your time) #Cruella #101dalmatians - - - - - Wow! I never expected this post to blow up the way it did! I'm so thankful that so many people find pet ownership a serious responsibility. 01.01.2022 Have you noticed that your cat has a saggy belly? Kitty hasn't eaten too many treats; it's actually a normal part of your cat's anatomy! The technical term for... this belly flap, which can often be seen swaying from side to side when a cat moves, is called the primordial pouch. This loose skin and padding at the belly provides extra protection for the abdominal area during fights when bunny kicking with their hind legs. It insulates and protects internal organs and allows a cat to store extra food in its belly. (Important for our ferals who sometimes go days without eating.) It also allows a cat freedom of movement to fully stretch and extend the back legs when running at high speed or jumping. Some people believe that spaying or neutering causes this primordial pouch. This is a myth. All felines, regardless of their size, shape, or sex have this extra flap of skin (including lions and tigers). Even cats who lose weight due to diet or illness still have these belly flaps. (Many thanks to My Feral Fix for sharing this information!) #TNR #spayandneuter #primordialpouch
