24.01.2022 THE PICKLE IS BACK FOR 2017 - you can enter online via our website www.pickleshill.com.au. New for 2017 - 3km of fresh tasty single track has been added to the course. Laps are now a neat 20km, so it's easier to keep count of where you're up to!

23.01.2022 Thank you to all entrants for Pickles Hill 2017! A reminder that we have a staggered start time for the race options - the 60k will start at 10am and the 20/40k races will start at 11:30am. Please take care in driving in to the event as the course shares a short section of road near the start. The road in is signposted from Colebrook.... We will have coffee and snacks available as George and Mary from Aromas Launceston will be bringing the coffee van down for the day. As there is no phone reception at the site there will be no EFTPOS facilities. An entrants list is now available at the link: http://my6.raceresult.com/81066/participants The course is now a 20k loop - about 4k longer than last year. The rain today has worked a treat on the newer sections of the track hopefully all set for a great day tomorrow.

22.01.2022 Yesterday while in the pain cave, suffering from a severe amount of bonking I couldn’t stop thinking about just how good the Pickles Hill venue is and how much ...that style of track is what I call mountain biking. As much as I love the trails at Derby, it is the pickles hill, the adventure riding behind derby @ the blue dragon event, Kelcey Teir, the Dial, the wild side event, the whole network of forestry roads, those adventure rides, those are the rides that I call mountain biking and that is what really sits at home with me. I often here people wanting a derby like venue in their own backyard, yes wouldn’t it be great. But is it needed? I am unsure.I like the idea of having just a couple of those world class all mountain, groomed and manicured trails, maintaining those to a high standard and focusing more on having a good mapped network of adventure riding, raw mountain biking throughout the state, why? Because that’s what mountain biking is for me at heart. Looking back, the rush I now chase on a bike came from riding those trusty blue 3 wheeled trikes going flat out down Lucinda restaurants driveway with Willo and somehow never losing much skin. I remember regularly riding from Latrobe into Devonport return when I was in primary school on our 16inch wheels. Trying to average a speed of 20kmph was the task and I am not sure I ever got it, pretty sure Willo did. Hence he excelled at road and I stuck to the fat treads! Then in 1998 I unwrapped my birthday present, it was a set of handlebars, trusty old Dad had the rest of the bike hidden up at a mate’s house. I stepped from my red REPCO steel weapon with a seat as big as a sofa, and probably as heavy as one to a metallic blue hard tail Gary Fisher (I wish I still had it with its deep dish pimped yellow rims). I thought I was king shit dropping off gutters down and riding while trying to bounce the forks as hard as I could, now we lock them out! Dropping off gutters soon turned into riding the local Dooley’s hill, aka ‘goat track’ fire trail, and soon I was timing myself to do runs up and down it.I should have invented strava back then! I still love riding that section of trail today, I never feel as fast as I when I was 13, but surely I am, I think. The first XC ride with my old man on the trails he used to ride with his mates back in his day I won’t forget, following his lines, listening to his stories. That ride and more were at the back of Latrobe through forestry roads and roughly carved motorbike trails, that ride really is what started my life long need to have tread on my tyres and mud on my face. What really is great is when I got back on the bike last year I found those trails again and showed others, who showed others. Being able to find and have the confidence to get out there and find these trails is what I want people to have access to. I now ride a bike that has more ability then my body can cash in on, but I love it. It is the sport, the bikes, the comradery and at times it really is that solitude of being in the bush and escaping the noise of the world. And that is what I was thinking about while suffering in yesterday’s race. Everyone grab their mates, get them on a bike, get involved with your local club, local bike groups, be active and ride for life. Ride on, race on, just get it on! out
