22.01.2022 HELP NEEDED! We have had an inquiry on behalf of an 85 year old lady who has fond memories of her childhood in Picton. She is trying to locate the property where she stayed with her parents Daniel and Kate Dawson, between 1944 and 1952. Her memory is that they "..rented two different places from the O'Brien's who had the dairy and slaughterhouse. The first place was near the slaughterhouse and it was rumored that Ben Hall had lived there. ...remembers it being a log cabi...n, where tree trunks were cut in half and that was the outside, and inside the walls were covered in newspaper which was painted green. The second place they rented was in Oaks Road past the bridge and the first house when turning left. The dairy was further up. " The WSC electoral roll for 1953 shows an Alphonsus Thomas O'Brien and Bridget O'Brien as residents at Abbotsford. The Picton Post of 22 April 1953 recorded the death of Mrs O'Brien noting that her husband John had predeceased her but she is survived by sons Alphonso and Paul. Can anyone help?

22.01.2022 FREE ACTIVITIES IN THE AREA: Swimming holes of Wollondilly - Post 2. This is Bargo River on the southern end. (not Mermaids Pools area) To get here turn into Ba...rgo River Rd a little south of Tahmoor township, at bottom of the hill turn left where the sign to Kiah Ridge Conference Ct is, then turn hard left again into the public reserve. This is very shallow paddle spot ideal for little kids. Visitors have commented that the water quality isn't very good so I researched it with NPWS . Our rivers & creeks all have a sandstone base which gives the water a yellowish tinge, the water quality is perfect & runs into the Nepean catchment so is regularly monitored. If you like to walk take a hike to the south along the creek on the service track. This will bring you to the Picton Weir ( sometimes called Bargo Weir) The track continues from the Weir up a steep hill & eventually brings you out at Balmoral. The full loop is a walk not for the faint hearted but its relatively flat to the Weir. No 4 WD sorry as there are gates, but walking is permitted. 19.01.2022 #OnThisDay 26 November 1879 the mugshot of AG Scott aka Captain Moonlight was taken at Darlinghurst Gaol. Captain Moonlight was a notorious #bushranger who "who... committed various crimes bank-robbery, passing false cheques, stealing gold and led a gang of outlaws until he was eventually caught by police, tried in Sydney in 1879 and subsequently executed in Darlinghurst Gaol in 1880." http://ow.ly/5iTK50wWXcS

15.01.2022 On this day - 9th November 1938, L.A. Kindergarten teacher Helen Hulick went to jail for wearing pants in a courtroom. Hulick, 28, wore slacks during a court a...ppearance to testify against two men, and her testimony was rescheduled and Hulick was ordered by Judge Arthur S. Guerin to return to the court in a dress. Hulick was quoted in the, Los Angeles Times saying, You tell the judge I will stand on my rights. If he orders me to change into a dress I won’t do it. I like slacks. They’re comfortable. Thank you Helen for fighting to make pants an acceptable form of dress for women. We thank you and many of our colleagues who attend court on a daily basis thank you. 82 years later we have a pant loving Female Vice President in the United States. 13.01.2022 Today another panel was unveiled on the Remembrance Walkway at the Sub branch. The WWII panel was unveiled by Thirlmere legend Fred Denny who also features on the panel. Thank you to all who have served our Nation in times of conflict and peace. Lest We forget.

11.01.2022 #OTD in 1838 Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum opened. The first patients were transferred from the overcrowded Liverpool Lunatic Asylum & the Female Factory, Parramatta on 19 Nov 1838. By 1869 Tarban Creek had become the Gladesville Hospital for the Insane. http://ow.ly/BKdN50Cmpuj

10.01.2022 Today we held an intimate yet social distanced ceremony to reveal the Geoffrey Keaton and Andrew O’Dwyer Memorial Playground at Telopea Park in Buxton to the fa...milies of the hero’s that lost their lives fighting to save our community. In attendance were the families of Geoff and Andrew, their Captain and crew from Horsley Park Rural Brigade, Picton CWA, Wollondilly Shire Council Representatives including Mayor Robert Khan and Councillor Matthew Deeth, Rural Fire Service Officers including Commissioner Rob Rogers, Superintendent Martin Surrey and Area Commander Simon J Davis, and of course, a team from the Buxton Rural Fire Brigade crew. Today was an incredibly special and emotional day. It was especially touching to see the children of these families enjoying the playground built in the name of their dads, uncles, sons, cousins and brothers. Thank you to all that attended and to all that made this possible in the first place. The official opening to the public will be in December where the journey of this amazing memorial will be shared
