25.01.2022 The purpose of using LOG gamma is to record as much of the Dynamic Range a camera sensor produces into the file that gets recorded to card. This file is a normal 8- or 10-bit file that is recorded in the cameras codec and must not be confused with RAW data (which is a completely different beast).

25.01.2022 This tense mid-air disaster movie 7500 was shot almost entirely in the cockpit of an Airbus A320 airliner.

24.01.2022 When Canon started confirming the specs of the R5, a full-frame mirrorless camera capable of recording uncropped 8K in 12-bit RAW, what didnt come to fruition until after its release was record limitations due to potential overheating.

22.01.2022 Shot on the iPhone 11 Pro and you guessed it, shot completely in the taboo vertical format!

21.01.2022 It will be a complete redesign of the whole system, including the image sensor. Everything is new!

21.01.2022 Im back in North Sydney running my popular One-to-One & Small Group video camera training sessions so Ive not had time to get down to the beach for sunrise th...is week. So, I have reverted to my current considerable collection of crazy, comical cockies who drop onto our balcony most afternoons around sunset.

20.01.2022 Getting inspiration from the great cinematographers will help you study the methods they brought into being through experimentation.

20.01.2022 A concern for some cinematographers is with a standard formatted camera, the film wont have the same emotional impact, it would almost feel more like a play than a cinema experience.

18.01.2022 It will most likely be full-frame and borrow from the FX9 including sensor, color science, video formats, and its autofocus system. In terms of size, its much smaller than the FX9 and will resemble the form factor of the FS5

18.01.2022 Shooting and editing and publishing content in the wild its a thing now. And you should make that thing one of the things in your ever-growing skillset and maybe even on your reel.

18.01.2022 If youre a Final Cut Pro X editor then youll want to update to the new version, 10.4.9 ASAP. Not for the smart conform that will auto-reframe your video for social media, or the improved Metal performance for some heavyweight codecs but for this one, Audio Crossfades.

17.01.2022 Sony has finally officially announced the a7S III, its third-generation video-focused full-frame mirrorless camera. The a7S MkIII offers a series of new features such as 10-bit internal video and Raw video output but the changes go much deeper. https://youtu.be/C6zA4QdSjVo

17.01.2022 Large-format cinematography has become very popular lately. Full frame cameras like the Sony Venice, RED Monstro, and ARRI Alexa LF have enabled filmmakers to capture footage with larger sensors, creating a distinct look and aesthetic upgrade from traditional Super 35-sized formats. https://nofilmschool.com/indie-65mm-short-film

17.01.2022 Sony is late to the party. DJI have already claimed most of the market since the company launched in 2006. Yet Sony is a global player with lots and lots of resources for developing such a device and they have the necessary expertise in terms of high-end camera tech, as well.

13.01.2022 The camera has a super 35 sensor with 12,288 x 6,480 resolution and DCI 17:9 ratio. That is a ridiculous 80 megapixels in each frame! Do we need it?

13.01.2022 We regard filmmaking as an art form...and if art is a consequence of human experience then it has to contain, and represent in some way, the entire human perspe...ctive. Diversity and parity is the key. What better way to realise the fullness in storytelling potential. To reflect who we truly are as a nation, and as a nation of peoples... My growth as an indigenous Australian cinematographer is partly due to a lot of support. Many kind words of advice and recommendations. At its best, our industry is highly creative and incredibly collaborative so surely we can accommodate and embrace voices that have been unheard... I saw this quote recently and it resonated for me in terms of our need for diversity: ...For too long it felt like there had been a line drawn - when we shouldve drawn a circle.... 12.01.2022 Im sometimes asked about the locations I use for my (almost) daily pre-sunrise photographs. Here is an overview of a favourite location for pool and surfing action

11.01.2022 At the WWDC 2020, Apple announced that they are moving to its own processors, designed in house, for desktop and laptop computer systems. https://nofilmschool.com/apple-arm-processors

10.01.2022 Out early to make to best of my evaluation time with Sony's latest video camera in the Cinema Line series, the FX6. It's a compact and light full-frame camera and it picks up on some of those ground-breaking features that make the Sony A7S Mk3 mirrorless camera so popular. Impressed, there are so many great features in this camera, some inspired by big brother, Sony Venice.

10.01.2022 Im sure a few of my friends are curious to find out how well it functioned in the field and if there were any overheating issues. So lets dive into a Cinema5D Canon EOS R6 review

10.01.2022 Autofocus technology has come a long way, and just in the last few years, we've seen giant leaps in face tracking and low light level autofocus performance, especially when talking about Sony cameras.

10.01.2022 Sony's Cinema Line, which includes VENICE, FX9, FX6, and FX3, all share (except VENICE) similar autofocus technology from the company's famed Alpha cameras. It's a big leap but a natural progression for Sony to start offering autofocus on higher-end cinema cameras where operators have traditionally relied on manual focus.

10.01.2022 While nothing can beat working with a sound recording professional, try these 10 Rode Wireless GO tips and uses to at least get you closer to recording decent audio in your videos

10.01.2022 The Canon R5 does 8K RAW internally. You can shoot 6K on the S1H, but to get RAW you need an external recorder. For Sony, the current "filmmaker" camera is the a7 III, which tops out at 4K. In truth, though, we dont care about the resolution number as an end in itself. The key is not the resolution of the file that is created, but the actual measurable perceivable resolution of the final image. If when projected on a movie screen you cant see any resolution difference between the 6K and 8K, then does it really matter?

09.01.2022 Theres a lot to like about the EOS R5 and R6 cameras. The EOS R5 is the latest full-frame mirrorless flagship capable of recording 12-bit 8K RAW internally. However, there are some things about the EOS R5 and R6 that are not so great.

09.01.2022 This is a great time to get to know these two Apple Pro apps over a few months before deciding if you want to take the plunge.

09.01.2022 Our current circumstances have lead a majority of the world to working from home. So, upgrading your seat might be one of the best things you can do to adjust to your new workspace.

08.01.2022 This is a brilliant move by Sony, because even though it still only shoots 4K UHD, it has a brand spanking new sensor. Sony put their focus on redesigning the sensor with the same resolution to create stunning video images. They are doing this with larger photosites on the sensor. Larger photosites mean better low light performance. The Sony Alphas series already does brilliantly in low light. This camera was designed to do it even better... https://nofilmschool.com/sony-a7sIII-staying-4k

07.01.2022 "The more people on set who can monitor the image the better" Im not sure about that! However, this product allows those on set to view what the camera is seeing from a distance.

06.01.2022 The P+S Technovision 1.5x line of lenses can provide widescreen across not only a vast array of focal lengths, but they’re also scalable across a wide range of image sensors. The result is that high contrast and deliberate lens flare shooters dream about.

06.01.2022 In Christopher Nolans Interstellar, the opening serves to transport us into a world ruled by hope and love. The movie was shot by Hoyte Van Hoytema

05.01.2022 Documentary content wants to be shot on zoom lenses, especially if youre rolling run-and-gun where its essential to be able to quickly change focal length without changing glass. https://www.premiumbeat.com//angenieux-ez-zooms-lenses-fo/

05.01.2022 The iPhone 12 Pro has HDR video recording and Dolby Vision at up to 60 fps. This incredible technical update is set to crank up video image quality more than just a few notches. This timely podcast showcases the best practices to follow when approaching mobile filmmaking/cinematography using your iPhone regardless of the model you currently own. How mobile filmmaking can give you an edge on the film festival circuit, and much more.

05.01.2022 When it comes to autofocus, there are a lot of different acronyms behind the various settings and functions: AF, Hybrid AF, Eye-AF, Face-Detection, Animal-AF, among others. But what do all these different names and letters actually mean?

05.01.2022 While our parents likely had one job their entire life, it is now normal to have several jobs/careers running parallel. No one job is likely to pay all of your bills, but together, they can make a whole.

05.01.2022 This is the magnificent Sony 600mm f4 GM telephoto lens. It's a whopper, lighter than you think and oh so loveable. I had great fun with it this afternoon in the midst of all the surfing extravaganzas around the area. Pity that I'll have to give it back.

05.01.2022 Timecode and sync are not the same things. Timecode is in fact only metadata to identify how the first frame is labeled for time when the camera begins rolling. Once a camera starts recording, it ignores external timecode and uses its own internal clock to record. https://nofilmschool.com/timecode-and-genlock-and-why-you-m

03.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM PETER JAMES ACS ASC This is very sad news indeed. Allen has not been well for some time. We were the best of friends, and had many friends in com...mon. I taught with Allen when he came out to AFTRS to fo the Masterclass at Ryde. We got along so well. Both younger and enthusiastic . When we were talking on stage together we were so in sync we would finish each others sentences, and then burst out laughing. Our assignment one day was Shooting on a shoe string. I was on one stage with 4 redheads and a blondie. Allens gaffer kept coming on stage and wheeling out the big eye 10K & 5K fresnel lights. After I asked Allen what were you doing with all those big lights? He said I dont like that low budget stuff. I was teaching 40s Glamour lighting. Could not be further from the brief. I was shooting a big commercial in the US in early 80s I asked Allen for a crew. He recommended Steve Shaw as my focus puller . Steve was with Allen on ET. Steve and I became good friends he is now ASC. We shared a flat together for a while in Santa Monica, so funny, thats another story. Allen was DOP on The STEM test. (35mm&70mm film to test digital projection) This lead to the DCP standards.I was producing, standing in for Curtis Clark ASC. Allen had a huge crew 5 cameras, rain, flames, 40 extras the works. Needless to say the footage was amazing. Every thing Allen did was amazing. He was that kind of man. A deep love of Cinematography and Films and all the people who make them. And we all love Allen. His endless enthusiasm about everything connected with Cinematography and making images. It was infectious . We will all miss you Allen, Rest in Peace mate. Peter James ACS,ASC.

02.01.2022 The images we are able to get from our smartphones and mirrorless cameras are becoming truly astounding, but there remains a major obstacle to creating great content on the fly, and thats audio capture. https://nofilmschool.com/sennheiser-new-mic-mke-200

02.01.2022 Sometimes a filmmaker just needs to see a few really simple techniques to demystify a problem that appears to be more difficult than it actually is.

01.01.2022 The list of added functions is quite long. This is undoubtedly a very useful firmware update for the FX9. https://www.cined.com/sony-fx9-firmware-2-0-update-release/

01.01.2022 It’s been the biggest season yet: SmartFone Flick Fest 2020 went both live and online, screening 85 films including 7 features, selling out our live Gala Awards in Sydney and giving away over $40,000 worth of prizes to our filmmakers. We had entries from over 50 countries and from filmmakers as young as 8 years old all the way up to retirees. There were just under 350 entries this year from across Australia, the USA and Europe but also from lots of new places including the Co...ngo, El Salvador and China. You don't want to miss the film that took out Best Director, Best Film and the Best Actor joint award. See it here: https://youtu.be/sjDbq5NsOkY
