16.01.2022 Effective parenting has nothing to do with pointing out our faults and everything to do with working out solutions. L.R. Knost For many people the current crisis is exacerbating parenting difficulties including cooperating with the other parent. This is occurring where parents are still living together, separated parents who usually co-parent effectively as well as recently separated parents and parents with long standing high conflict relationships. During this time th...ere are people and services available to assist. We encourage parents to consult with family dispute resolution practitioners to try and resolve parenting issues. Such issues can include: interim parenting arrangements, such as during this crisis; single issues such as selecting schools and religious/spiritual experiences; strategies for dealing with a childs special needs; payment of child related expenses, and working out arrangements that will work for the longer term. It is important to select a family dispute resolution practitioner who suits you and the other parent; someone who will continue to assist you as issues arise and who has the patience and expertise to conduct as many separate or joint sessions as needed to help facilitate communication, mutual respect and compromise. We work with a number of experienced private family dispute resolution practitioners. If you are experiencing difficulties in your parenting relationship and you would like further information about family dispute resolution practitioners or suggestions for practitioners in your area please contact us.

04.01.2022 The Family Court delays were shocking prior to Covid-19; now they are worse. It is painful to witness the impact of the lack of access to justice for separated couples & parents. I encourage clients to take all available steps to try and avoid litigation as I am confident that having a resolution imposed on you by the Courts, or other expert, deprives parties of the significant & positive long term impact of self-determination. However, for some, litigation is necessary. Thes...e people must be afforded greater access to justice which means a far faster process than is currently the case. Interim parenting arrangements are in place for years and children are living with parents in a constant state of fight or flight for far too many years of their precious childhoods. There are too many ramifications for financial matters to list in this post. The psychological & financial harm of such a delayed process is evident daily when I speak to clients facing the Court system. The current conditions breed hostility and contempt which the Covid-19 crisis has demonstrated more than ever. The Federal Government can and must do better for families and properly fund such an essential service. Consider contacting your local federal member to share your concerns about the delays in the Family Law Courts. - Rosemary Norgate See more

Obtaining legal advice early will assist you in making decisions and with your discussions with your spouse. You may need to talk to your spouse about how and who will leave the house, how you are going to pay for things and support yourself and children in the immediate future and distributing property and superannuation on a final basis. These are important decisions which could be in place for quite some time. If you would like support and advice please consider the information on our website and contact one of our lawyers to discuss further.
