14.01.2022 *How The Ribs Influence Spinal Mobility* The middle section of your spine is called the thoracic spine. It’s made of up 12 vertebrae. You also have 12 ribs (som...etimes more), and these 12 ribs articulate onto the vertebrae of the mid spine. When you study the rib cage, you have an appreciation for rib diversity. For example the 1st rib attaches to the spine differently to rib 12th. Because ribs have their own unique shape and attachments, they’ll influence spinal mobility in their own way. The same can be said for breathing mechanics too. Talking about every single rib would simply take too long as I want to keep your attention long enough to give you some value. So today I just want to highlight the middle ribs... The ribs move, they move a lot. If they didn’t, movement of the trunk would be very limited and rigid. Ribs 3-9 are known as ‘typical’ ribs due to their shape and attachments. These ribs relate to the spine in a really interesting way, they have 3 joint articulations onto the vertebrae. Take the 7th rib for example. It attaches onto the transverse process of the numerical vertebrae (7th vertebrae) - costotransverse joint. The 7th rib also articulates onto the body of the numerical vertebrae and the vertebrae above (in this case the 8th vertebrae) - costovertebral joint. See the picture above to see the 3 joints. How cool is that? 3 joint articulations! So to some degree the 7th rib will influence the movement of the 8th vertebrae as well as the 7th vertebrae. Why Is This Useful Information? Well it can help us appreciate and understand the many factors to what could be inhibiting freedom of motion at the spine. It’s easy for these joints to go under treated when treating the spine. Typically the facet joints get all the attention. Now I’m not claiming that I can individually palpate these joints, but you can definitely palpate the general area and help mobilise the ribs which can have a fantastic influence on spinal mobility as well as breathing. Treating the intercostal muscles (which are normally quite tender) can be incredibly liberating for the torso and spine too. I hope you found this information useful when assessing for spinal mobility. If you would like to know more about spinal assessments comment below or message me. Tom

07.01.2022 PATIENCE + PERSISTENCE: Five years after Romana certified me, she taught me the introductory version of the "squirrel" exercise on the cadillac. I had myself co...nvinced that I would never be strong enough to do the full out version with the push thru bar. I was very afraid that I would hurt myself due to my flexibility and lack of gymnastics background. It took 6 years to strengthen my powerhouse enough to safely tackle the "squirrel" full out, but I'm so glad I didn't give up. See more
