24.01.2022 I was asked today why I practice and teach Pilates. Have I ever been into Yoga? Which do I prefer? I believe it comes down to the individual. I have practiced both. I love both disciplines for different reasons and believe they both have equal benefits. Yoga was part of my life before Pilates. Pilates came into my life after back surgery as part of my rehabilitation. Both principles traditionally teach the individual to connect the mind and the body. To take time to focus... and breathe. At this point in my life Yoga is my meditation and stretch time whilst Pilates is for strength, stability and rythm of the body in motion, not just for Core strength. During a class I encourage awareness of your body in motion through space, something we take for granted everyday until we sustain an injury that requires rehabilitation. I have included an article I read last year "Yoga v's Pilates". This article resonated with me as it had been a question I asked myself before I decided to train in Pilates. See more

22.01.2022 Let's talk about the Hip Flexors. The Hip Flexors are a group of muscles that allow us to flex at the hip joint whilst moving our hips. They help us to bringing the thigh and knee towards the torso as we move our legs, bend forward from the hip joint or sit down. When the Hip Flexors contract to cause flexion at the hip, the muscles shorten. Bringing the femur closer to the hip joint & spine.... If you spend a lot of time in your car, at your desk or in front of the TV your Hip Flexors can become weak and tight as they spend a lot of time in a short contracted position. Short tight Hip Flexors can lead to poor posture, limited range of movement, hip and back pain. Not to mention this can also lead to injuries due to poor functional movement patterns. In short your Hip Flexors need to move to stay strong and healthy just like YOU! 20.01.2022 Pilates began in the 1920's thanks to Joseph Pilates. Joseph called it Contrology, the object was to coordinate the mind, body & soul. Pilates was originally used for Rehabilitation to strengthen the body whilst healing aches & pains. The Pilates method today is still used to strenghten the body, improve flexibility, body awareness & balance. Pilates is a series of controlled resistance exercises improving core strength, spinal alignment, coordination of the mind, body & sou...l. Although there are many variations of the original exercises Pilates remains true to its origins. Pilates exercises can be modified for mat sessions with small apparatus, whilst standing or seated in a chair. In a studio setting you may use Pilates equipment such as a reformer, cadillac or wunda chair just to name a few. Pilates is a method of exercise that can be of benefit to people of all ages and sizes. I personally started pilates as part of my own rehabilitation post back surgery over 10 years ago. I became a diploma qualified pilates instructor so that I could share the benefits of pilates with others. Improving their quality of movement and life. 19.01.2022 Let's talk Hamstrings. Your hamstrings are located at the back of your thigh. Without getting too technical they cross over two joints, the hip and the knee. The hamstrings are made up of 3 muscles that not only allow your leg to move into extension and flexion but can also affect the position of your pelvic and inturn effect your posture.... Contracted tight hamstrings at the hip-pelvic can contribute to lower back pain by pulling the pelvic down and causing a posterior pelvic tilt which in turn puts pressure on the lumbar spine by flattering out your Natural spinal curve. Tight hamstrings can also contributed to pain in the front of your knee. As it affects the fluidity of movement in the joint. When the hamstrings and quadriceps are not in a balanced state, mobility and flexibility are not in balance. This inturn can compromise the knee joint. You guessed it tight weak hamstrings can also affect the movement at the hip joint. Once again effecting our ability to move fluently and maintain our balance. Making the hamstrings a very important group of mucles that need our attention and care. Pilates exercises are the perfect balance and a very affective way to both strengthen and lenghten our hamstrings. Improving your posture, strength, flexibility and confidence. 19.01.2022 When someone talks about Core Muscles you think Abs. Most people do so let's go a little deeper. The Core Muscles are the foundations of the human body. At some point in everyday movement the other muscles in our body will rely on your Abs, the hips and the lower back. The Core Muscles consist of the deeper Transverse Abdominis, the Obliques both internal and external, plus the Rectus Abdominis the one that everyone refers to as the six pack as well as the Erector Spinae wh...ich help support your spine. Like build anything you need a good foundation right! So what does Transverse Abdominis do? Think of it as your inner corset that wraps around your spine giving is support and stability. The Obliques are the next layer of muscles on the sides and under the upper abdominal layer of the Rectus. These guys assist you not only to maintain good posture but also assist with rotation and flexibility. We did touch on Erector Spinae which is a group of posterior muscles which not only supports the Spine with extension but also assist with flexion and rotation. When you strenghten the Core Muscles as a group these muscles allow you to stand upright with greater balance and strength. Improving your posture coordination and movement patterns.This in turn improves your self-confidence and outlook on life. 16.01.2022 Happy Easter I hope you are all safe and well. I have demonstrated some simple arm exercises whilst on a foam rolller. These can be done on your mat or whilst sitting upright in a chair. Remember to lengthen your spine. Focus on the breathe, inhaling as you open/expand your arms + ribs. Exhaling as you return. Take your time as you move to the rhythm of your own breathe. 13.01.2022 This looks like a shoulder exercise but it is so much more. This exercise works the shoulder through a range of movements that require the cooperation of the shoulder muscles. Building flexibility, strength and coordination within the shoulder. This exercise also challenges the Core muscles. It encourages elongation of the spine and challenges your balance.... This exercises definitely is not as easy as it might look. With time and dedication you can learn how to recruit the right muscles to facilitate fluent functional movement of each individual joint within the body. 10.01.2022 Feet...love them or hate them we all have them. Feet are like our foundation upon which our body stands. Like the foundations or footings of a building they need to be strong. They give us a base upon which to stand enabling us to stay upright. We walk on them to get from A to B. We use them to propel us through the water as we swim. We dance, run, hop, skip and jump on them.....but are they part of your exercise routine? Do you stretch and strengthen your feet? Or do you g...ive them little attention until the hurt? If a building doesn't have strong foundations it will begin to faulter. If we do not take care of our feet we also begin to faulter. Walking with a limp or hobbling about. This changes our natural walking gait. Causing knee, hip and or back issues. You see if your foundation is not strong everything about it is weakened. Therefore taking care of your feet is essential.
