25.01.2022 Spring has well and truly sprungand so have allergies and hayfever! It’s no secret that Melbourne is notorious for high pollen levels in Spring. Our Naturopath from Brighton Wellness Group Tracy Kilburn [BHSc Naturopathy] has shared some great Springtime tips with us She says, "Vitamin C is one of the best ways to combat hayfever due to its natural antihistamine properties and immune system support.... Our bodies don’t store this important vitamin, so we need to replenish it through foods like citrus fruits, broccoli, berries, capsicum, kale, kiwifruit and mango." What’s your favourite Vitamin C rich food? #pilateson88bay #brightonwellnessgroup www.pilateson88bay.com.au www.brightonwellnessgroup.com.au : kaleandcaramel.com via Pinterest

25.01.2022 Introducing our client of the month, the lovely Vanessa Hallyburton. How long have you been coming to Pilates on 88 Bay? I started around September of 2017.... What made you start Pilates to begin with? I had considered starting Pilates for a while but, of course, my busy life always got in the way. I was lucky enough to win an initial consultation and 3 classes which gave me the push to begin practice. Have you noticed a change in your everyday life since starting Pilates? Absolutely! I feel taller, less hunched over and lighter when I leave each Pilates class. What’s your favourite exercise? So many! I love doing circles with feet in straps, book opens always feel great and firing up my glutes on the reformer. What’s one of your favourite Instructors cues? It’s always great when Kandie gets on the floor and models what she wants me to do so I can see the correct technique in action. Tell us something we do not already know about you! I lived in England for a year and have travelled to a dozen other countries. I’m a passionate Collingwood supporter [no judgement please] and am the proud godmother to 4 beautiful little ones. Thanks for the insights, Vanessa! We love working with you to achieve your health and wellness goals. www.pilateson88bay.com.au

19.01.2022 Introducing our fabulous instructor, Mich Rose. Mich's passion for wellness and her wealth of knowledge in all things Pilates is a huge benefit to our team. With a background in classical ballet and contemporary movement, Mich gained her Bachelor of Health Sciences and a Master of Nursing, then worked in cardiovascular care at the Royal Children’s Hospital for over 25 years. ... Mich then completed her APMA Diploma in Pilates Movement after discovering her fondness for Pilates when pregnant with her first child. ‘I fell in love with the positive physical benefits for my chronic neck pain and knee issues. It’s been a great opportunity to move and manage my body in different ways over the years.’ Mich Rose. We just love having Mich as part Pilates on 88 Bay team, and we know you’ll have the most wonderful Pilates experience with her in any of her classes!

18.01.2022 Do the Leg Pull, they said. It’ll be fun, they said. Our amazing Kandie doing the Reformer Leg Pull exercise and making it look like a breeze, but we know betterthis can be one nasty little exercise! Despite the burn you’ll feel, this killer movement is great for promoting hip, core and shoulder stability while working on glute and hamstring strength. ... A handy tip while performing this one is to maintain a neutral spine and upright shoulders [don’t let them sink down]. What’s your favourite Pilates exercise? We love a good challenge.

17.01.2022 Did you know that Pilates on 88 Bay partners with Brighton Wellness Group? A huge part of what makes us different from other Pilates studios is our partnership with @brightonwellnessgroup, whose clinic is conveniently in the same building! Chiropractor Dr Scott Maginness shared a great tip on the benefits of working with Pilates:... ‘The synergy between Chiropractic and Pilates is enormous. Chiropractic improves the body’s structure, function and alignment, whilst Pilates helps to hold this structure and function through a strong core and correct movement patterning. Having worked with Pilates on 88 Bay for many years, it is profoundly evident that patients who participate in both have better movement, stronger bodies and better outcomes.’ Dr Scott Maginness. We love working so closely with this passionate group of practitioners who share our vision of holistic approaches to health and wellness for all ages and stages. www.pilateson88bay.com.au www.brightonwellnessgroup.com.au

17.01.2022 Can you practice Pilates with an injury? One of the FAQs Anna addresses on the blog is whether or not Pilates is a good idea when carrying an injury. This is such a frequent enquiry from clients that we thought it deserved a little more information The short answer? YES! One of the best things about Pilates is that it doesn’t discriminate. Each exercise can be modified and tailored to each individual’s needs and can even assist in rehabilitation and recovery.... As long as you have clearance from your doctor or medical professional, we are always happy to welcome any kind of limitation into the studio. Our classes have small numbers, which allows instructors to spend one-on-one time with each client for careful, guided instruction. If you’re unsure about Pilates while injured, don’t hesitate to get in touch and talk to us about your needs! www.pilateson88bay.com.au

13.01.2022 Why do we need strong glutes? Aside from looking fabulous in jeans, strong glutes lead to increased stabilisation, alignment and prevention of painful problems like Achilles tendinitis, shin splints and iliotibial band syndrome. With the increase in sedentary lifestyles and time spent sitting down [hello computer work ], it’s even more important that we appropriately and sufficiently work the glutes and legs to ensure those muscles maintain the strength and mobility neede...d later in life. We have plenty of exercises that will have your glutes burning and your legs thriving, so next time you’re in the studio, ask your instructor and she’ll be happy to spend a little more time on your tushand don’t worry, you’ll thank us the day after. #pilateson88bay #melbournepilates #pilates : be. 13.01.2022 Have you been sitting for too long? Spine Curls with extension may be exactly what you and your spine need. After so many months in isolation, most of us have been sitting down more than usual and for much longer periods. This progressive exercise combines the spine curl exercise with the Reformer to emphasise spinal mobility, pelvic stabilisation and hamstring strength.... Hamstrings are crucial to lifting and lowering the body, while the extension phase accentuates hip opening and lengthening in other words, the opposite of what happens when sitting at a desk for too long! This is one of the key exercises we will be leading our clients through when we return to the studio next week, so book in for a tailored class if you’re ready to try it! #pilateson88bay

07.01.2022 Nothing says ‘2020 vibes’ like this photo of instructor Kandie. If you’re feeling slightly exhausted right now, you are definitely not alone! This year has been so tiring for our minds and our bodies, even though a lot of it was spent locked inside and sitting down. Lack of movement can actually cause more fatigue, though, and prolonged sitting has made it tough to get back into the swing of things. Treat yourself with kindness, ease back into your health and wellness, and... take a break if neededor just flop to the floor, that’s always an option. We are so excited to say goodbye to 2020 and hello 2021, and just like always, we will be here for you! www.pilateson88bay.com.au

03.01.2022 Have you tried the Standing Leg Press? Here’s our awesome instructor Mich demonstrating this key Pilates exercise [and making it look oh-so-easy, of course ]. The Standing Leg Press with Chair is great for developing control in the hamstrings, strengthening gluteal muscles in the buttocks and quadriceps [knee extensors] and promoting correct leg alignment and balance. It also works your pelvic stability, lengthens your torso, and improves your ability to disassociate leg m...ovement from the rest of the body. Here’s a quick run-down on how to do the Standing Leg Press: Stand upright away from your chair and balance with one foot on the pedal and arms out to the side or overhead. Exhale and press the pedal down with the ball of the foot while standing tall. Inhale to slowly control the pedal back down, staying balanced with a neutral spine. Be careful not to slouch into your hip or change pelvic position. Repeat 12-15 times on each leg for best results. The key here is to hold awareness of your standing leg working as a stabiliser while activating the hamstrings and gluteal muscles. Give this one a go next time you’re in the studio! www.pilateson88bay.com.au
