21.01.2022 Are you MIND-FULL or MINDFUL? Do you glamorise being busy? Being busy means we must be important. But what really is important? ... Our lives seem to have become so busy, which in turn makes our minds full. This has a flow on effect in the way that we look after ourselves and our bodies. Are you too busy to exercise? Too tired due to the lack of exercise? Eat fast food because of the lack of time? My clients say they feel better when they make the time to exercise & that it has a flow on effect into their everyday lives including productivity, motivation and a sense of self worth. Sometimes it can be as easy as making an appointment in your schedule to make it to a class. Actually blocking out the time in your calendar with an alert! This way you know you have an hour to yourself, you can't answer your phone and you are fully present in the class to focus on your breath, your muscles and to enjoy the movement through your joints (especially if you've been sitting all day). Technology these days is amazing, but one thing I'm noticing more & more is the inability to completely switch off from your work/social life in class. Smart watches are great devices but they are totally distracting in class! You might be focusing on your breath & your technique in your plank when your wrist buzzes and your mind has just completely gone back to your work/social life and your technique suddenly drops. This is so silly! You've come to class to be able to focus on your body. It's only ONE hour of your day that you're allowing yourself this time to exercise and to be free from distraction... Use it wisely! Take your watch off, turn your phone on silent and leave them at the door. It’s the connection of mind over movement- that differentiates Pilates from other forms of exercise. As Joseph Pilates said: Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live in. We live everyday in our bodies. It’s important to value our bodies, respect them and acknowledge what they do for us! 18.01.2022 THE PILATES BREATH Pilates uses the breath in various ways, to enhance your performance. The benefits of breathing correctly during your class ranges from enhanced relaxation, decreased stress levels to lowered blood pressure, improved focus, activation of specific muscles and better circulation. Who knew that something as simple as breathing could have so many benefits! In Pilates, we mostly focus on the Lateral Breath. LATERAL BREATHING emphasises the lateral expansion ...of the rib cage while maintaining a consistent inward pull of the deep abdominal muscles, during both inhalation and exhalation. In basic terms: breathing in and out of the rib cage whilst keeping your abdominals pulled in. How is this beneficial in Pilates? It helps to maintain the abdominal contraction whilst performing exercises that need a stable core, so you gain maximum benefits. HOW TO PRACTICE LATERAL BREATHING: Lying on your back with your legs bent in, have a neutral spine and place your hands on the sides of your ribcage (not your belly). Gently draw your navel in towards your spine (don't force it too much, just a gentle connection), without losing your neutral spine, feel your pelvic floor gently lifting and hold that connection. Feel your breath moving into your ribcage where your hands are and feel your hands expand outwards with your inhalation and feel your hands/ribs closing in with your exhalation. Keep your navel drawing in the whole time whilst you keep breathing into the sides of your ribs. You will still be able to breathe slowly and deeply, the ribs will expand sideways and allow plenty of breath to move in and out. Hold this connection and breathe into the sides of your ribs for 3-6 breaths, then relax and try again. You can perform this as many times as you like throughout the day. For more of a challenge, place a tennis ball on your belly and don't let it roll off whilst you breathe. It's also great to practice this whilst seated (without the tennis ball, obviously!) Incorporating positive changes into your routine can have ripple effects on other aspects of your life. Healthy habits come in many forms, whether it's cutting down on mindless screen time or making better choices about food, sleep & exercise. If you've struggled to implement healthy habits, read on for some tips to hel...p you! CREATING HEALTHY HABITS: It can take 3 weeks to several months to create a new, long-lasting habit. Once you've succeeded, you won't miss the inner struggle, it's actually less stressful to stick to your new habit than to backslide and beat yourself up about it. Don't make the mistake of going too big, too soon. Be patient and focus on the smaller goals that you can actually achieve. For example, instead of wanting to do a Pilates class every single day, try a Pilates class every second day. Then figure out what steps you need to take to further your goal from there. GRAB A BUDDY: Don't be shy about sharing your goals! Let your friends and family know about your plans, you might find someone else has similar goals & you can work on them together. FOCUS ON THE REWARD: I personally love to reward myself from achieving a goal! Whether it's the simple things like being able to grab a coffee after attending a class or by purchasing new activewear once I've attended a certain amount of classes per week/month. Focusing on how good it feels to get these rewards, can help you to push through the hard times. TAKE BABY STEPS: Start small. Whether you want to become a runner or a Pilates pro, you have to start somewhere. Whether it's a 10 minute jog or a 10 minute online workout, that's better than nothing! You can then increase your time each day. The key is to take your time. Don't rush creating a habit because it'll then be harder to maintain. Work out what is best for your body & mind. 08.01.2022 SETTING goals, no matter how big or small, can make a massive difference to our health and happiness. How we SET these goals can be the hardest part to actually achieving them! Have you ever set a goal only to lose momentum and give up? We are all guilty of this, even myself! Before we start working out our steps to achieve our goals, it's super important to understand WHY we are setting them. Our why needs to be a significant desire that will help us to get through the ...hard times. Take your time to get clear on your goal and then follow these simple steps to achieve them: DECIDE on the goal... Take your time, ponder on it, find the real reason for this goal that will light you up in trying to achieve it. WRITE it down... Writing down your goal will increase your chance of success! Visualise yourself achieving your goal as you write it. Feel into how good it will feel once you do. Write down those feelings. Set yourself a timeline. Write down your WHY. TELL a loved one... Having someone to support & motivate you, will definitely help along the way! Especially during the tough moments when you want to give up. PLAN on how to achieve your goal... Access the steps you need to get this done... go back to your written goal and work out the steps to get there. Don't cheat, you want to do this properly so it sticks. The shorter route isn't always best. KEEP going, you've got this... I promise you, it will be worth it! Re-read your why, feel into the feelings that you'll have once you achieve it.
