24.01.2022 Yesterday was the start of 16 Days in WA. This is an annual event starting on the 25th November on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women running through to the 10th of December, Human Rights Day. This year the campaign theme is Respect starts with you. Over the next 15 days PCLS are helping to celebrate the rights of women, men and children to live free from violence. Today we invite you to talk to your girls. Have an open and honest conversa...tion with your daughters about dating, technology and abuse. By having this conversations we help our young women to have expectations, standards and develop a sense of what is right and wrong in a healthy, happy, and respectful relationship. Three things to talk about are: a) Healthy relationships: healthy relationships are based on love, respect, and equity. Talk about what they can and should expect out of a relationship. Help them build up standards of what is good and what is bad. . b) Don’t shy away from those awkward topics: sex and sexuality can be uncomfortable to talk about. Start using correct anatomical terms for body parts, be realistic about sex in today’s society, be supportive- don’t shame them for their choices. Impress upon your girls consent and their right to say ‘no’ at any point. c) Talk about domestic abuse: unpack family and domestic violence. Abuse happens to 1 in 4 Australian women and should not be considered shameful to be experiencing it. Teach your girls to recognise abuse in their own relationships and in their friends relationships For more information as a parent or guardian head to 18000 Respect web site, or direct your children to loveisrespect.org. If you want to support your daughters, try calling your local domestic violence support worker to talk about healthy relationships and other tips on this conversations.

22.01.2022 What should surprise us about domestic abuse is not that a women can take a long time to leave, but that she has a mental fortitude to survive Hill, 2019, p. 19 Jess Hill is a leading Australian investigative journalist researching and writing extensively on domestic abuse. In 2019 she released her non-fiction work See What You Made Me Do: Power, Control and Domestic Abuse. It’s a raw investigation into the experiences of perpetrators, victims and professionals. She takes t...he reader from the theories and styles of abuse through to the systems, policies and procedures that attempt to create justice. Hill writes in a way that speaks to professionals, front line workers and members of the public, taking them on a rollercoaster of emotions while delving into the complexities of domestic and family abuse. If you want to learn more about domestic and family violence, through the perspectives of survivors, perpetrators, and front line workers you can purchase this book online or borrow it from the Karratha and port Hedland Libraries. If you are in other locations, you can speak to staff members about loaning from other libraries. See more

04.01.2022 Today we are half way through our 16 Days in WA. When a friend or family reaches out, we want to help them as much as we can. But it can be a bit difficult listening with such distressing and vulnerable. Here are a few tips on how to support a friend or family member when they disclose domestic abuse: If a friend or family member discloses abuse to you, there are a few tips on how to best support them: 1. Never victim blame: It is never the victims fault they are experiencing... abuse. Reminding them they have no role in causing the abuse. Don’t try to advise them on how to best deal with an abusive incident, or question why they did something in particular. 2. Be an active but not an interruptive listener: this might be the first time a victim has spoken about what they are experiencing. When they are telling their experience to you, it may seem jumbled, jumping from one event to another, forward and backward. This is normal. Try not to interject, let them speak freely. You might find yourself wanting to ask for clarification or trying to chronologise the events- this can be unsettling and unhelpful. 3. Don’t ask why she hasn’t left: it can take up to seven times for a victim to leave a domestic violence relationship. In most cases it is safer for victims to stay with their abusers then to leave. There are a multitude of reasons that a victim can’t leave, or even decides to stay including financial needs, support for children, or mental health matter, she may even still be in love with the abuser or hoping for the promised changes. 4. Be supportive: There is a fine line between being supportive and becoming overly involved. Many support people find themselves fearing repercussion, becoming ‘intrusive’ or getting involved more than they feel comfortable. Be open and honest about what you are willing to do to help out, this can range from just chatting to supporting in custody handovers. By knowing what you are willing to assist with provides the victim with expectations and a good support network.
