23.01.2022 ITS OT WEEK And as a present to many of you.... we are.... Bringing the CO-OP treatment model to the Pilbara ... And boy oh boy are we excited! Not just for OT week but to bring back to the Pilbara the knowledge from the course Hayley and Kelsie have completed late last week! Delivered by some very amazing and highly regarded Associate Professors! It is the most relevant and current research. The evidence producing quicker and more functional outcomes for clients (that suit this approach). It’s certainly a different approach BUT the evidence can not be faulted! And watching countless demonstrations/outcomes of this approach has us excited!! The CO-OP approach is a problem solving model to help individuals overcome limitations in everyday tasks, and what we often see, is that the clients that use this approach are able to transfer and generalise this approach to other areas of life! To use this approach you’ll need to be; Over 5 years of age to adulthood, Be able to communicate (verbal or through AC) Be able to understand concepts You’ll notice, if you are suited to this approach, that therapy sessions may look a little different! But we ask that you trust the process and let Kelsie talk you through what it is going to look like. Stay tuned for more info Big love Pilbara OT

09.01.2022 KIDS ARENT MEANT TO SIT STILL! I receive so many referrals from teachers because students cant sit still. They wriggle all over the mat and cant keep their h...ands to themselves. They often get up out of their chair or approach the teacher for seemingly pointless reasons. They lie on the floor instead of sitting with their legs crossed. This is often mistaken as a sensory or attention-related issue, when a lot of the time, it is simply children being children. They are meant to move and they learn better when they do. One particular study from 2016 involving 500 Grade 2 and 3 children in the Netherlands, found that those who learned in physically active classes tested better academically than kids who sat at their desks. Here are some ideas for increasing movement in the classroom: Schedule movement breaks at least every 15 minutes, considering the time of day as to whether the movement will be more active (e.g. animal walks, star jumps, running, hand exercises) or calming (e.g. yoga, stretching) Have students act out concepts they are learning or combine concepts with actions, (e.g. punch the air for each letter in a sight word, jump for each item counted in a maths problem) Give kids a movement to complete when transitioning from one activity to the next, e.g. march, jump, hop, skip Allow individual kids who seem to be having trouble concentrating to get up and move around, e.g. deliver a message to the front office or collect lunches from canteen Complete classroom chores like sharpening pencils, wiping the board or stacking chairs Provide different seating options, e.g. wobble stools, fit balls, beanbag chairs, lying on the floor, standing up at a desk Moving the mouth counts - allow kids to eat when they are hungry (not just at set break times!) Letting kids move in class isnt a break from learning, it IS learning. #kidsneedtomove #vestibularinput #movementinput #movement #attention #adhd #physicalactivity #sensoryprocessing #school #primaryschool #letkidsbekids #movetolearn #occupationaltherapy #otforkids #kidsofperth #perthkids #activeclassrooms #playbased #learningthroughplay #movemore See more

09.01.2022 HAND STRENGTH allows kids to perform many everyday tasks, including using cutlery, opening containers, doing buttons, brushing their hair, playing with Lego and... writing. Some kids may have poor hand strength due to joint hypermobility or low muscle tone (which they are born with), or simply due to a lack of use of the muscles in their hands (not enough play time). Here are some of my favourite go-to hand strengthening activities: Pacman" (cut open a tennis ball, squeeze and feed!) Squeezing pegs Squeezing stress balls Picking up small items with tongs or tweezers Hammering activities Theraputty or playdough Construction games like Lego Squeezing a spray bottle Baking (stirring, rolling, kneading) Digging/gardening Opening and closing jars Tearing and scrunching paper Cutting construction paper Crab walking Bear walking Monkey bars Weight-bearing yoga poses Climbing Crawling Wheelbarrow walking Tug-o-war You can find a handout with pictures of these activities for quick reference at www.pcot.com.au under Resources #handstrength #prewriting #learningthroughplay #earlyintervention #muscletone #hypermobility #grasp #pencilgrasp #playbasedlearning #earlychildhood #childhooddevelopment #strength #strong #pacman #lego #animalwalks #climb #play #perthplay #mumsofperth #dadsofperth #kidsofperth #perthot #occupationaltherapy #paediatricoccupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapyforchildren #preschool #schoolreadiness

08.01.2022 Too often, I see children reprimanded when they're not able to control their behaviours and emotions. They’re expected to remain calm and happy, not get upset, ...not display anger, and quickly calm themselves down if they do get angry or upset. If they can’t do this, they may be referred to me for "self-regulation difficulties". Here's the thing. Self-regulation is a developmental process. Just as we wouldn’t expect a child to run before they can walk, we cannot expect children to self-regulate until they’ve experienced co-regulation time and time again. And unless a child has had it modelled enough, and their brain has developed enough, they will not achieve regulation on their own. Have a think - when was the last time you heard a 3 year old say I’m so angry my sister hit me! I need to calm down. I’m just going to take myself to the kitchen for a drink of water and do some deep breaths. Co-regulation begins from birth. When babies are unsettled and we cuddle them, rock them, feed them - we are helping them to regulate. When toddlers are angry that they can't have the toy they want, and we empathise with them, sit with them, get them a drink - we are helping them to regulate. When preschoolers are upset because they're not ready to leave their playdate, and we listen and help them take deep breaths - we are helping them to regulate. Self-regulation only BEGINS to emerge around 4-5 years. And whilst some 4-5 year olds may be able to regulate themselves, others may not be able to. Both are within the typical range of development. True self-regulation is not fully established until our mid-twenties. Even then, we often turn to others to help us feel better when we are feeling low. And we are often quite happy to help other adults feel better when they're feeling low, however when children need our help, we may be reluctant to give it, perhaps in fear that we will stunt their emotional resilience (amongst many other understandable but unfounded fears). When we ask a child to regulate themselves before they're ready, we risk shaming them, affecting their self-esteem, and affecting their relationship with us. Co-regulation needs to come first. You may not be able to help your child regulate 100% of the time, and that’s okay. Just know that they may not be ready to do it themselves.

08.01.2022 R U OK? DAY Today is R U Ok day Although we feel strongly at Pilbara Physio and OT that every day should be r u ok day and we should be genuinely and regularly checking with those around us. Today is a good reminder- see below for this years focus from the r u ok day website:... THERES MORE TO SAY AFTER R U OK? 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. In the lead-up to R U OK?Day well help Australians know what to say when someone says theyre not OK and guide them through how they can continue a conversation that could change a life. You dont have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says theyre not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before theyre in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life. We have a lot of support services in Karratha- if you would like our most upto date list please reach out and we can provide a list of private and public mental health support options. https://youtu.be/erHLP29tzPE

02.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK At Pilbara OT we acknowledge and respect naidoc week and the meaning behind it! NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula.... The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. We acknowledge and respect the traditional owners of the land on which We work and live. We recognise their continuing connection to the land, water and community and I pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging. #alwayswasalwayswillbe
