22.01.2022 Our Reserves Following on from the RFSU vehicle mounted patrols that conduct reconnaissance, it would be remiss of us not to mention surveillance. There would... be many soldiers out there past and present that have spent hours in an OP (Observation Post) or on picquet forward of the main body of troops, watching and waiting and waiting and waiting. That is the life of the soldier. Our RFSUs Pilbara Regiment; North West Mobile Force - NORFORCE; and 51st Battalion, The Far North Queensland Regiment constantly patrol our northern and western regions. Conducting reconnaissance and setting up surveillance, as they guard our sparsely populated shorelines inland to the deserts looking for threats to our nation such as illegal activities - where they provide extra eyes to our police - or ready to assist those in need including those who underestimate the hazards of the Australian outback. The Patrolmen of the RFSUs use many skills derived from lessons learnt from the military and from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander methods that make their capabilities vital for our national security in regions often forgotten by those in the southern states. The Australian Army has some of the best equipment in the world, but often it is the old tried and true methods that are most effective. Image of RFSU OP Commonwealth of Australia Pic by CPL N Campos

04.01.2022 The RFSUs and their forebears the Light Car Patrols. Our Regional Force Surveillance Units (RFSUs) operate a G-Wagon 6x6 variant as they range the northern an...d western regions of our vast continent but the origins of their skills go back a century! During WWI, the Australian Light Car Patrols used Model T Fords mounted with a Lewis Gun and crewed by three soldiers. Initially their job was to fight the Senussi arabs in Libya to the west of the British stronghold of Egypt while the Allies pushed east through Sinai and up through Palestine battling the Turks. The Senussi threatened Allied bases and the Suez canal from the west and were fierce fighters able to traverse great distances, but their weaknesses were that they were vulnerable to heavy weapons and they were not able to hold ground. Thus was born the tactic of long-range vehicle mounted reconnaissance able to skirmish with these warriors, fix them, battle them and outrun their camels. Today our RFSUs use GPS to navigate and satellite communications to maintain contact. In the eastern Sahara of 1917, the magnetic compasses used for navigation were affected by the engine’s magnetos so a rudimentary sun compass was used as well as the technique of building cairns little piles of rocks and placing a metal jerry can on top. The sun would reflect off the can and could be seen for many miles, assisting these long-range patrollers in navigating through hostile terrain. After the Senussi were defeated to the west of Egypt, the Light Car Patrols joined with the Light Horse to the east in Palestine and would scout ahead of the horsemen assisting the movement of troops north through present day Syria and towards Turkey. According to Charles Bean, they became heroes to the Light Horse and would be used to do deep reconnaissance and rescue downed airmen. During WWII, the Allied SAS troopers used the same tactics in Africa with their Long Range Patrols and again during the modern-day campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. The G-Wagon Trucks (Surveillance and Reconnaissance) of today’s Australian Army provide great mobility, especially to our Patrolmen of the RFSUs in the North and West, and the tactics, techniques and procedures of our troops are learnt from the lessons of our forebears and from the skills and knowledge of the generations of aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander locals who serve in, and work with our RFSUs.
