13.01.2022 Security is not a nice to have especially when caring for our parents We have heard people worrying about what if my home automation system is hacked. They could steal my identity. In this day and age its unfortunately that reality most of us suffer identity theft in some form. I have had my credit card compromised 4 times in as many years. Thankfully the banks are awesome at detecting as it starts to happen, and have improved the cancelling and re-issuing of a new card. ...Last time I was overseas my email account got hacked. They used it as second factor authorisation to break into my amazon account and order equipment using my stored credit card. The transaction flagged and stopped. I cancelled my card within 5 min and changed my passwords in both accounts. It as easy for me because I understand about technology and could easily trace how far they had got. It’s not a matter of IF, but WHEN and HOW FAR they get. That’s why in my life I create technology system circles. You hack into one circle - you get what’s in there but you don’t get into my other information/identity. We did the same thing when we designed our parents home automation systems. We created generic isolated accounts just for the home automation system. This creates what is known as an air gap between the home automation system and their personal information. Nothing is hacker proof, but it is a really good start to protecting yourself and your loved one. Contact us at www.pillarone.com.au if you want to know more about how are have designed security into the off the self-home automation kits, before you install one in your family home.

05.01.2022 Apple has launched an update that brings home automation and accessibility to the forefront. Imagine being sent a text when a family member leaves work, or arrives home. Then the lights and air con can come on when nearly there. Simple meets smart but it takes a geek to setup and make sure this simplicity stays working. If you want to learn more, do more and more easily than you thought

04.01.2022 Who can work out buttons on remote controller? or even which one to use We believe that voice controls are the key to solving this problem. What you can do with voice commands is improving every day. They allow us to control things when your hands are full, or things are difficult to operate. Now is a great time to discover what can be simplified in your lifestyle. The top things I use voice controls round my unit is Play Headspace meditation as I go to bed or wake up in th...e morning. It’s meant I make more time to mediate as I can do it while tucked up warm and cosy in bed. I am not reaching over things to start the session or end it. If I fall asleep it finishes by itself. While doing chores in the kitchen or laundry you will hear me calling out for Spotify to change the track or volume. It helps me stay upbeat when doing boring things. My Audiable books are my favourite while I cook. I love being read a story while prepping dinner. It allows me to keep up with my reading. There are so many things to discover. Jump onto www.pillarone.com.au any time you want inspiration on what we have discovered out voice home automation bundles are useful for. We always love hearing how others are using their systems, so please share your stories too. See more

04.01.2022 Swearing is allowed Things don’t always go smoothly when using products like Alexa. It’s so frustrating when even the computer does not understand you! Really proud of how Amazon have been improving their voice training. A few months back we posted https://www.pillarone.com.au/post/first-smiles where we reviled the challenges with voice training set up with Alexa.... The sentences were complex and used words that not everyone would be familiar with like Velcro especially if English is not your first language. I am happy to report that in the latest install we did the choice of sentences has become a lot more simple with easier common sentences which are mainly the common commands you will use like Alexa read me my voice messages. They also improved the speed of questions being fired at you. If you don’t repeat immediately instead of jumping to ask the next question it gives you the instructions again and repeats the question. A much more relaxed training experience. Not sure it was our feedback we sent to Amazon, but fantastic to see these improvements arrive. Still doesn’t stop the occasional swearing when she does not understand me. It’s funny using creative swearing like bolder dash and oh bother. You get very confused replies.

03.01.2022 Voice automation systems are perfect in care homes I recently got asked Friend: Could you recommend a simple phone with really really large buttons with the phone numbers she needs programmed in for a relative who proudly turned 100 this year. My reply: It’s not a phone you need it’s an Alexa. Let her just ask Alexa to call who she wants to talk to. She doesn’t need to see the buttons and can easily turn the volume up louder than her phone. Friend: That’s great but she is i...n a nursing home. You need internet and things for a system like that. Time to get practical. As long and you can get phone and at least 3G connectivity in the room we can make magic happen. To test this grab you phone when you next visit and look at How many bars of signal do you have Which carrier you are with If the 3G or 4G (or 5G if you are really lucky) is showing Jump on and browsers something on the internet. If your phone works at a reasonable speed, there is a solution. Shopping list: 1. Cheap phone with a voice and data sim 2. Wifi router with a data only sim 3. An Alexa 4. Power board if you can’t find 3 power points in the room That’s all you need to let your loved one easily call people. If you need to know more about how to set up the three devices contact us at www.pillarone.com.au. We love creating tech bundles which keep people connected.

03.01.2022 Reminders just got context added Alexa, remind me to take my heart medication at 8am It might seem a small thing but having context with your reminders can be life changer. It was wonderful to see this week Alexa Amazon launch reminders with what you need the reminder for be launched. ... This just made life challenges so much easier for carers. Now you can ask Alexa to remind your loved ones to take their pills and describe which ones! Or that it’s time to get ready for their pick up to the doctors and more. By adding a reason for what the alarm is about your can leave the home and know that Alexa will be talking your loved one through their day. It is wonderful to see the functionality of voice technology moving into being able to assist in the vital care of our family members. If you have a loved one who you would like to set up a home automation system, but not quite sure where to start, reach out to www.pillarone.com.au.
