24.01.2022 Did you know ... a Babylonian youth named Elmesu carved the first known Father’s Day card in clay nearly 4,000 years ago? His special message wished his father good health and a long life. Pilliga Pottery & Barkala Farmstay are expecting a busy weekend with the Tour de Gorge kicking off from The Blue Wren Cafe on Saturday morning then on Sunday we are offering every Dad who orders a meal one free drink of his choice to help celebrate Father’s Day. #pilliga #pottery #pilligapottery #coonabarabran #clay #handmade #bluewren #cafe #camping #accommodation #farmstay #gelato #icecream #pizza #class #workshop #studio #bushwalk #father #fathersday #tourdegorge #buyfromthebush #buylocal #buyregional #supportlocal #supportlocalbusiness #supportsmallbusiness #supportlocalartists

20.01.2022 Last week I was lucky enough to join a small team for 3 days supporting Kerry at Pilliga Pottery & Barkala Farmstay to maintain the bush tracks on Maria’s unique 13,000 acre property located in the Pilliga wilderness, just 30 minutes out of Coonabarabran and 30 km north-east of the Warrumbungle National Park. Firstly, the staff are so warm, supportive and friendly that after a few days I felt like part of an extended family, headed by Maria, who started to develop the proper...ty in the late 70’s. Maria’s children and their families along with staff from all over the country and the world run and operate this unique property and business and they were happy to share their many stories and yarns of theIr pioneering journey to establish and develop the business and make it the success it is today. Now the bush tracks ... the great surprise and sheer pleasure for me was how the bush was laced with wild flowers of all shapes and forms coming into bloom with their mix of bright colours from pinks, purples, white, yellow and more. It looks like the bush there will be alive with colour and at its peak during most of September so try and get there then if you can for a visual feast. There is also a Whitebox (Eucalyptus Albens) on the property that nudges the Australian record for that species along many other twisted and gnarled old trees. The ancient weathered sandstone landscape is the setting for the wildflower show on rocky ridges, down into sandy gullies and along the valley floors. You can’t help but hear the bush whisper stories from millennia gone by as you wander along the winding tracks. The many bush tracks were designed with great thought by Kerry to also take in panoramic views, hidden rocky chambers and unique weathered sandstone features and cater for all levels of fitness and ability. The legacy of one of the biggest droughts on record, then the oppressive summer heat and bushfires on nearby lands have reeked havoc on the fauna in the Pilliga but rain has since come and there’s a good chance you will still see birds of prey, rare parrots and small bird species, roos and maybe even an emu or two. I fully recommend you get out to the Pilliga and check out this amazing property and landscape. Check in with the team there, grab one of Kerry’s maps and then head out on a very special bush walking experience that you will never forget. Written by Bruce Derkenne
