25.01.2022 In this Tamar Estuary and Esk Rivers (TEER) video, Karen Palmer gives a very clear explanation of the tides in the Tamar estuary and the changes that can be expected from sea level rise.

25.01.2022 GOOD NEWS! We’ll be re-opening the Maritime Museum at the Low Head Pilot Station from 10am 4pm THIS SATURDAY 5 Sept & SUNDAY 6 Sept Then from THURSDAY to SUNDAY for the next two each weeks, in tandem with the Pilot Station Cafe Low Head up to the school holidays.... And from then on we’ll be OPEN FULL TIME again 7 days a week from 10am 4pm. ENTRY is a modest $5 for Adults; $4 Concessions; $3 Children Pre-booked tours $3 per person; School tours $1 per student COVID precautions will apply, of course. We'll be relying on locals and intrastate travellers to keep our volunteer 'meet and greeters' occupied so please help spread the word by SHARING this post. The photos show much of what the museum is about - PILOTAGE - see it in action outside and then you can 'read all about it inside! AND - after a quality check held last week you will again hear the FOGHORN sound at the Low Head Lighthouse at 12 noon THIS SUNDAY 6 September, and every Sunday from then on.

23.01.2022 The short video is the second in the Tamar Estuary Esk Rivers (TEER) education campaign, explaining the natural history of the kanamaluka/Tamar estuary and doing a little "MYTH BUSTING" in the process! For more discovery topics see NRM North 's Facebook page or its website www.nrmnorth.org.au/water/education. Peter Cox is actually "GEORGE TOWN's Geography and Geomorphology expert" - and he's an expert on much more than this AND is also co-curator of the Maritime Museum!... An expanded version of this topic was to be presented by Peter at the George Town and District Historical Society's May meeting, but will now probably take place at the first meeting "after COVID19" ... possibly September.

20.01.2022 George Town - Low Head has been a favourite route for running events for many years, following most of the kanamaluka trail close to the banks of the Tamar to the sea! The loop into the historic Low Head Pilot Station and along our beautiful East Beach provides some special highlights of the journey! There is so much history to take in while you Walk, Ride or Run around the George Town Council area, especially along this particular route!

18.01.2022 The Pilot Station was abuzz when we welcomed 50 primary school students and their teachers and assistants from the Newstead Christian School to the Museum. They certainly seemed to be enjoying their visit and were looking forward to spending some time at Lagoon Bay before returning to Launceston. School visits are an important part of what the Museum does, and we often see parents brought back by their offspring for a return visit so they can send more time, perhaps on the M...orse Code machine. Thanks, Kids! The Pilot Station Cafe Low Head was also doing a brisk trade for lunch that day!

10.01.2022 The Low Head Pilot Station was a hive of activity 25 years ago after the "Iron Baron" was wrecked on Hebe Reef as it became the site for the major clean-up of birds, etc affected by the resulting oil-spill. The station was a mass of marquees, swimming pools, etc as hundreds of locals (and others many from further afield) rallied to help with the massive effort to rehabilitate the wildlife. This Mercury story that appeared on the 20th anniversary of the disaster in July 2015..., will trigger many personal recollections of this time. What do YOU remember about this time?

09.01.2022 The Low Head Pilot Station is always open for recreational pursuits, but you'll also find the Maritime Museum and the Pilot Station Cafe Low Head now OPEN FOR BUSINESS from Thursday to Sunday

09.01.2022 175 years ago TODAY on Monday 2nd June 1845, the Brig Tobago was wrecked on the reef under the Shear Beacon near the Low Head Pilot Station. Throughout the whole of the convict era, most of the boatsmen at the Pilot Station were convicts, but their names are rarely mentioned in Newspaper stories. 15 boatsmen who were part of the "Tobago" rescue mission were convicts and were rewarded for their "Meritorious Conduct. The correspondence included in this article actually nam...es those convicts! Make sure you click on the link below to read the full story. One of these men may be YOUR ancestor! See more

07.01.2022 Blown away by the beautiful and ever-changing cloud formations at the Low Head Pilot Station yesterday! @ Low Head, Tasmania

07.01.2022 The Maritime Museum is not able to open just yet, as our volunteers are mostly 'over age' and some vulnerable, but there's still plenty to enjoy on and around the Low Head Pilot Station site. Heritage accommodation is available through Low Head Pilot Station Accommodation in most of the other buildings at this site and at the Lighthouse not far away. They'll even leave the light on for you! And the Coxswain Cottage Cafe is also open from Thursday to Sunday. Just had to share this little video snip of what you'll find if you visit our little patch of Paradise.

06.01.2022 We've been discovered! It's great to see Low Head and its surrounding attractions through appreciative visitors' eyes. Thank you, Simone Yemm, for you well written and comprehensive travelogue in this month's RACT Journeys magazine. This exposure is priceless!

02.01.2022 TOMORROW (TUESDAY 18 August) around noon, the FOGHORN at the LOW HEAD LIGHTHOUSE will sound. It's been quite a while since the foghorn was heard performing its usual Sundays at noon ritual, and the volunteers who make this happen have been busy doing necessary maintenance and making some adjustments in the 'down time'. Parks and Wildlife has given approval for this Tuesday's sounding in order to test these out, and we trust that no-one is inconvenienced by this.... If all goes according to plan, the Foghorn Sunday soundings will resume in September and the Low Head Pilot Station Maritime Museum MAY also be reopened to the public by the beginning of next month. The Pilot Station Support Group is meeting with Volunteers this Wednesday and more definite advice will be posted here following that.

01.01.2022 Here is Peter Cox with Part 12 of this interesting series of videos. You'll be able to hear Peter speak about the Geomorphography of the Tamar Estuary at the November meeting of the George Town and District Historical Society - 7.30pm on Monday 16 November at The Grove.

01.01.2022 The Low Head Pilot Station Maritime Museum may not be open to visitors yet, but there are still plenty of reasons to visit the site. There's nowhere better for a leisurely stroll at the end of the day (or anytime really!) around these beautiful old buildings and all the features of the Pilot Station site. Imagine the people who once worked on the station, guiding the ships in and out and keeping everything 'ship-shape'. Their families lived in the cottages, learnt their les...sons in the school and attended the church on Sundays. Capture the views at that 'golden hour' as a reminder of this special place, find a spot to dangle a line or just sit and contemplate. The Coxswain Cottage Cafe and Low Head Pilot Station Accommodation are both open for business so why not come and see all that we have 'at the end of the road'? There is so much more to do and see.
