20.01.2022 Wear it Purple Day is Friday the 28th of August, 2020. Wear it Purple Day is about showing LGBTIQ+ young people that they have the right to be proud of who they are. It is about creating safe spaces in schools, universities, workplaces and public spaces to show LGBTIQ+ young people that they are seen and supported. Last year over 750 schools, community organisations and universities held events across Australia, and through the activities of schools that recognise Wear it Purple Day, including PSSC. This year we will celebrate and show our support for our students by wearing purple. Students may wish to accessorise their uniforms by wearing some purple as well.

VET Music students were responsible for running the lighting, audio, visuals and their own performances live, which were a huge success. I am very proud of the professionalism and talent that our students have shown. We will upload the full performance on the school YouTube channel soon but for now, here is a sneak preview courtesy of our talented Film and TV students. Kind regards Matthew McAulay Certificate II & III in Music Industry Teacher

17.01.2022 Junior School celebration of success assembly this morning. Academic achievers with GPA of 4.5 and above, student achievement awards for students with 95% attendance in semester 1 and all excellent for behaviour and effort. Congratulations to all students receiving an award.

17.01.2022 Just a reminder that school photos are tomorrow. Students received envelopes with payment details to take home. If these envelopes did not make it home they can grab another from the photographer tomorrow and you can still order and pay online. Students need to be in formal uniform. There are no practical sport lessons on tomorrow so no need to bring an additional uniform. If your child is unwell and not able to come to school, there will be a catch up day in the next few weeks.

16.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago we posted a great TED Talk by Year 7 student Katherine Saunders talking about driver safety. Between 1 January to 22 November this year, there were 245 fatalities as a result of crashes within Queensland, which is 47 fatalities greater than the same period for the previous year and 30 fatalities greater than the previous five year average for the same period. This is an unacceptable increase in the loss of life on our roads and must be addressed. Katherine has submitted a petition to state parliament asking the government to introduce a range of strategies designed to reduce the amount of young lives lost on the road each year. You can support this petition at the following link: https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//petit/petition-details

15.01.2022 Hospitality students Hayley, Kati, Gracie and Chiara had an incredible day at the Qld Tourism Council Come and Try Day. Congratulations all! There will be a Virtual Careers Expo on Tuesday 15th June.

15.01.2022 ATTENTION ALL STUDENTS, do you think you can get a team of up to 10 friends together and show the staff how the Push Up challenge is done? If you think you can you have 1 WEEK LEFT TO REGISTER FOR THE PUSH-UP CHALLENGE starting June 01 and going until June 25 To get involved:... 1. Go to our Community page https://www.thepushupchallenge.com.au//pimpama-pride-pimpa 2. Use this passcode: Pimpama 3. Once you have joined the community you then create or join a team of up to 10 people within our Community. 4. Spread the word and get others involved. 5. Start prepping yourself 6. 1st to 25th June: Get pushin’ 7. During the event we will plan meet ups around the school in the mornings or break times for teams to come together and do their push ups, sit ups or squats. 8. Parent permission form for all students under 18 must be signed: Join us as we push for better mental health Let’s get together as a school community and help better understand mental health and let everyone know its ok to ask for help and that we are all there for each other. This June, get a team of up to 10 people together and challenge yourself to complete 3,318 push-ups over 25 days to shine the spotlight on mental health. Why 3,318 push-ups? This represents the number of people who died by suicide in Australia in 2019. Sounds like too many push-ups? We are aiming to get a lot of staff and students signed up and involved and have made the decision for each participant to complete 25%, of the push-up target which works out to be 830 push ups, sit ups or squats over the 25 days that’s 33 a day. Having 10 team members in your team means each team will complete 8300 push ups, sit ups or squats during the 25 days. Push ups, sit ups or squats can be done just about anywhere and you can spread your exercise out over the day. Through the event app you can bank your push-ups and see how your teammates are going. Our Community is proudly supporting: Headspace https://www.thepushupchallenge.com.au/be/headspace-National Fundraising is an optional part of the event but a great opportunity to support critical mental health services across Australia. Join us as we push for better mental health.

07.01.2022 If you recognise these two individuals by their clothing or addidas back pack please contact the school Monday morning 55409333 or leave a message over the weekend. They are responsible for considerable vandalism during the night. This is the first time in almost 8 years we have experienced vandalism of this nature. Such a shame and just pointless behaviour. These images and tags have been provided to QPS. Please don't speculate or mention names online to protect people that may not be involved.

07.01.2022 Yr 11 & 12 Assessment adjustments for students with different circumstances There are many reasons why students might not be able to complete their assessment in the same way and on the same day as other students. These reasons include chronic headaches, diabetes, dyslexia, low socio-economic circumstances, anxiety, family situations and more. Students in these situations may be eligible for an Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustment (AARA) for their assessment, which a...llows for example, additional time, rest breaks, extensions, medication, snacks/lollies to be taken into an exam, or seating out of order. However, these arrangements can only be provided if there is an approved AARA (in most cases) in place. A reminder for closing dates for AARA applications: existing long-term and chronic conditions for Unit 3 in Term 4 are due 18 October 2020 alternative format papers for CIA (Essential English and Essential Mathematics) for 2021 are due 30 October 2020. Note: The PSCC AARA application pack has more detailed information or visit the QCAA website https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/assessment. If you have any concerns, questions or unsure if you are eligible, contact the school.

06.01.2022 Just a reminder that this Friday is a state wide Student Free Day.

05.01.2022 Dear parents and caregivers I am writing to provide you with updated information regarding COVID-19. I understand that there is an increasing level of anxiety, given current media coverage of the latest health alerts for our local area, and the potential impact on our school community. We are continuing to liaise very closely with public health authorities and our own Department in relation to the latest developments and will act immediately on their advice.... I can reassure you that the most up-to-date advice from Queensland Health is that our school is safe, and we will continue to operate as normal. The health, safety and welfare of your children, our students, continues to be my number one focus. We continue to monitor the situation and our school remains open. Should that advice change, I will act immediately and take whatever action is necessary to safeguard the welfare of every member of our school community. While we currently do not have any confirmed cases at our school, I will update the school community immediately should this change. Our school has been taking all appropriate precautions regarding health and hygiene and we will continue to take the advice of Queensland Health in response to this significant public health issue. We all have a role to play to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community. If you or any members of your household develop symptoms or feel unwell, please see your GP and call ahead before you visit. Further up-to-date information including interstate hotspots, contact tracing https://www.qld.gov.au//c/current-status/hotspots-covid-19, symptoms of COVID-19 and when to seek medical advice and prevention, can be found via Queensland Health https://www.qld.gov.au//conditions/he/coronavirus-covid-19 Please look out for each other during these difficult and challenging times. Yours sincerely John Thornberry Principal

05.01.2022 I had the great pleasure today of presenting one of our 2020 graduates Miranda McDean with her certificate for the T.J. Ryan award. Up to 10 TJ Ryan Memorial Medal and Scholarships are awarded each year, to support exemplary Queensland students to pursue tertiary studies. Miranda is following her lifelong passion to become a nurse by completing her Bach of Nursing at Griffith University. State and non-state secondary schools can nominate one high achieving year 12 student for this award. Nominees should demonstrate outstanding leadership in their school and community and academic excellence.

04.01.2022 This year has been a year of uncertainty for the Performing Arts Department, resulting in the cancellation of many of our usual performance events. However, that didn’t deter our music students from working hard to create a series of amazing performances. As COVID prevented us from inviting parents to live performances, the college chose to share our students’ extraordinary talents through a recording of the annual Music Showcase at the Youtube link below. Please enjoy. https://youtu.be/4mkfVUJOTeQ

03.01.2022 Student Attendance There is a distinct pattern of poor attendance that seems to be occuring every Friday. Attendance rates at the school drop each Friday by around 7%. 1 in 5 of our students are regularly taking Fridays off school. Most students at the school study 6 or 7 subjects and those subjects are scheduled 3 times per week. This means that on those Fridays when your child is absent, they are missing one-third of the learning in four of their six or seven subjects. Simp...ly not good enough. In addition to the negative impact on achievement and the flow on effect of fewer post-schooling opportunities for your child, consider the message being sent. Turning up to work four out of five days is good enough. I don't know any workplace that would tolerate that for very long. Simple message: Fridays are just as important as Mondays. So Monday to Friday - wake up, dress up, turn up. See more

01.01.2022 An awesome two days with our Year 5 friends from local primary schools participating in the ACE Project. Check out this great video of the two days https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVJDwFaL7JU

01.01.2022 Make sure you tune into Network 10 this Saturday (19 September) at 12pm. We have 5 students who successfully auditioned earlier in the year for Creative Generation State Schools on Stage. The show is usually performed to a crowd of thousands at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre but this year, it’s a little different. A fantastic concert full of Dance, Drama and Music all performed by State School students throughout Queensland.

01.01.2022 Parents of the college, we are seeking assistance in the return of these Maths and Science Textbooks that were loaned out whilst students were working from home during COVID restrictions. If you have any of these books at home, could you please return them back to the college.

01.01.2022 Congratulations to Liam one of our 2021 STEM Academy students who was recently awarded his junior black belt

01.01.2022 Yesterday some of our dedicated Year 10 students along with students from other North GC high schools volunteered at the Ramsay Health Care Triathlon Pink Series. Students gave up their Sunday sleep in for a 6am start and helped out with medals, water, track running, the massive clean-up at the end and most importantly moral support for the runners. Whilst speaking to the event coordinator yesterday, these marathons raise over 8 million dollars a year for breast cancer research. First photo crisp at 6am, second photo a slightly exhausted 11am. Thank you also to Ms Amanda Pahl who gave up her Sunday morning to assist the students.
