11.01.2022 A big congratulations to Erin Helyard and Richard Tognetti on winning the AIR Award for Best Independent Classical Album last night! Richard and I are thrilled to have been awarded Best Independent Classical Album for 2020 for our ABC Classic release. We conceived the album as a kind of history of the violin sonata, which, like most chamber music, is rooted in the mating rituals of the eighteenth-century middle class. Violin sonatas started out as part of courtship activiti...es, with the experienced female keyboardist being accompanied by her much less talented male violinist. Things began to change in the 1790s. Courtship rituals became less centered on female accomplishments and this encouraged composers to start treating the violin sonata as a real duo. And the (quite literally) revolutionary nature of the Paris conservatoire encouraged musical education for both sexes. The disc explores sonatas by Mozart and Beethoven and contemporaries. Along the way we perform works written for and by women (Mozart’s 1784 B-flat sonata was written for the exceptional violinist Regina Strinasacchi, and I play a set of variations by Josepha Auernhammer, Mozart’s pupil) as well as the Kreutzer itself: originally dedicated by Beethoven to the black violinist George Bridgetower. - Erin Helyard
