25.01.2022 A fantastic second episode from Magnus Eriksson (of House Histories) to follow on from his first Brisbane River video in a series of documentaries tracing the Brisbane River ("Maiwar"), from its source to the mouth. This fascinating episode makes mention of the long-lost Cooyar Quarry. Just another 180kms or so until the Pine Mountain & District Historical Society Inc will be working with Magnus in the mid-section!

24.01.2022 Wonderful to see services return to Pine Mountain's St Michael's Catholic Church this morning.

24.01.2022 Thank you to the Pine Mountain and Districts Historical Society for organising a great Anzac Day Service. The Pine Mountain Honour Stone is located next to Pine... Mountain Road near the junction with Russell’s Road next to the Cricket Pitch. It was wonderful to see the 2nd Light Horse Lockyer Troop in attendance. My uncle Albery De Berg was a member of the 2nd Light Horse. Sadly, he was killed in action at Jericho in Palestine and lies in peace in Jerusalem.

23.01.2022 I was pleased to attend the annual Blessing of the Graves Ceremony and Mass held today at St Michael’s Catholic Church at Pine Mountain. Thank you to the organi...sers and Father Stephen D Bliss. This service is a wonderful opportunity to remember loved ones and friends who are buried at St Michaels. See more

21.01.2022 We love this sign that was created by a lovely lady who regularly walks the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) with her dogs. Fashioned out of old railway dog spikes & bolts, along the Trail near Mt Hallen (near Esk), a year or so ago.

20.01.2022 In September last year, we met with Magnus Eriksson (of House Histories) who is working on a YouTube series documenting the Brisbane River ("Maiwar"), from its source to the mouth. This first fantastic episode features the group's hike to the source of the Brisbane River - Cooyar Creek/Bunya Mountains. We look forward to working with Magnus once he reaches the mid-Brisbane River sections

19.01.2022 Kerrie & her friends rode part of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail between Benarkin - Linville a couple of weekends' ago. And called into Len & Mary's place on the way for a bite to eat/rest.

17.01.2022 Many Happy Returns, Mrs Summerville

17.01.2022 Thanks to Maree Garland for sharing this photo of her Great Grandparents, Pat & Mary Sherlock, (nee Doolan). Maree's Grandfather is sitting on Mary's knee.

16.01.2022 PINE MOUNTAIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO HONOUR LOCAL BOY, "BERT" At the Pine Mountain Historical Society's most recent meeting, a motion was passed to honour our local boy, test cricketer, Herbert ("Bert") Ironmonger. Bert was born & raised on Riverside Drive in Pine Mountain. The Society will engage with the Department of Transport & Main Roads - the overseeing body for the Trail - in regards to installing signage about Bert along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail at Pine Mounta...in, along with a bench for Rail Trailers. The Society is considering contacting the author, Max Bonnell, about his most recently published biography of Bert, in order to obtain authorised access to clear, historical photos to use on the signage. And for guidance on the wording of the signage that will be installed. This sign along the Trail about Bert Ironmonger will complement the Roy Emerson sign that is along the Trail at Nukku - Australia's longest Rail Trail is home to two great sporting icons! We look forward to keeping you in the loop with progress on the signage & the bench that will be installed along the Trail at Pine Mountain.

10.01.2022 From the Cairns Post 29th Dec 1939 QUEENSLAND PLACE NAMES. BRISBANE VALLEY HIGHWAY (Compiled from Various Sources and... Personal Observations ---S.L.M.) The pastoral occupation of Queens- land's fertile acres began with large grazing areas in the north-west of New South Wales, extending across the border (then non-existent) into the South Western Darling Downs near Goondiwindi. But the first settle- ment of the Darling Downs was Les- lie's Toolburra property. Such good reports of its grazing merits filtered through to the south, that wave after wave of pioneer graziers followed Les- lie's tracks north, each overlapping the other in their squattages, but all be- yond the prescribed area of the More- ton Bay penal settlement. Although Helidon, Murphy's Creek (Fingal) and Grantham were taken up, the main wave of development proceeded in a northerly direction through Crow's Nest to the fertile upper Brisbane Valley. Firstly, Cressbrook (McCon- nell) 1840; secondly Durundur (Archer) 1841; thirdly Kilcoy (Mac- kenzie) 1842; fourthly Colinton (Bal- four) 1842, were taken up and de- veloped. Transport was difficult, but the general direction of the primitive bush track has been followed by the fast completing Highway now labelled "The Brisbane Valley Highway." Let us hope it will retain this historic title and not be spoilt by being given the name of some politician passing swiftly across life's stage and leaving little, if any, distinction behind him. Originally the road to Esk (42 miles from Ipswich) proceeded via Pine Mountain, but the new highway fol- lows the Toowoomba road for 6 miles before going North. Brassall is the outlying suburb to the North-West of Ipswich. This name was given some- time after 1851, but its origin cannot be traced. A small creek is now crossed - Mihi Creek - locally pro- nounced My-Hy, although Surveyor Warner spells it apparently phonetically Me-hee, on plans prepared by him in 1851. Ironbark Range is a series of hills of no great height, and easily crossed by the road. The name is doubtless due to the literal reading of the Surveyor's plans where he de- scribes the country as "Sandy Gullies," "Hilly Country" and "Ironbark' Ranges." The name, however, has been adopted and will in future appear on the Lands Department maps. An- other creek is crossed, called Pouin- cradda Creek, on Warner's 1851 plan. The Main Roads Commission has labelled it "Ironpot Creek" as it is known locally, but the reason is un- known. "Pouincradda" has been re- stored to the Land maps. The inevitable Sandy Creeks follow. No. 1 and No. 2, then the Brisbane Valley Railway is crossed near Wa- nora. This name is due to the Rail- way Department, and its derivation is unknown. The road now ap- proaches settled areas. Fernie Lawn and Wivenhoe were adjoining runs on the Brisbane River taken up when the embargo on settlement within 50 miles of the Brisbane Penal Settlement was lifted in 1842. Fernie Lawn belonged to the Uhr Brothers, one of whom was killed when working sheep in a yard near the site of the present Lake Manchester Dam. The surviving brother was partner with Mr. J. C. Ferriter in Wivenhoe. "Fernie Lawn" and "Wivenhoe" apparently are named after ancestral districts in England, but no definite information is available on the matter. Lieutenant Joseph North (68th Light Infantry) of Kil- duff in Ireland, came to Queensland in 1841 on the ship "Sarah" with the last batch of convicts for Moreton Bay. Shortly after his arrival he resigned his commission, and induced his father and brothers to come to Quensland, where Fernie Lawn, Wivenhoe, Northbrook properties were purchased. Fernie Lawn no longer exists as a property, but perhaps Fairney View is a survival. But 18 miles from Ipswich is the small township of Fernvale--originally Har risborough for F. and G. Harris had a branch store here in the early days the tiny creek was called "Stinking Gully," later changed to Ferny Gully. The railway line was opened to the district in 1884 and the Railway De- partment named the station Fernvale. The township was surveyed by Sur- veyor F. W. Ellis in December, 1884, and the railway name adopted. Near the Fernvale State School a road branches off to the left, to ultim- ately join the Toowoomba Highway. It passes through Vernor (named in 1869 after the late Captain Vernor of the Connaught Rangers, a Crimean veteran) whose home was just across the river.from the railway station, and then comes the township of Lowood. In September, 1825, Major Lockyer of the 57th Regiment traversed the Brisbane River to its source---naturally that explains Lockyer Creek, which enters the Brisbane River a few miles past Lowood. The railway reached the township in June, 1884, but the town surveys were made by Surveyor R. D. Graham in 1872. Originally known as Smith's Inn, it was changed to "The Scrub" locally, and then in the late seventies to "Cairnhill" by the provisional school teacher, Mrs. Wah- renquist. The locality abounded in low brigalow scrub surrounded by ad- joining high forests, and from this low scrub the name is derived, "Lowood." Returning to the Highway at Fern- vale, the Brisbane River is crossed by a low level bridge, then after a few miles of fertile alluvial flats, hilly coun- try is traversed with Wivenhoe pocket on the left. Crossing the Brisbane River again over Wivenhoe Bridge, the road winds over an isolated group of unnamed hills, but known to local travellers as the "Big Hill." But where is the site of the old "Wivenhoe Inn"? Then comes Bellevue. Photo- The Bank of Queensland - Lowood 1922 { now Dentist} See more

01.01.2022 A reminder that there won't be an ANZAC Day Service at the Pine Mountain monument next week due to adherence to Governmental COVID-19 non-essential travel & social distancing regulations. We really like the sound of this idea by Ken McLeod & locals are still able to pay a visit to the War Memorial monument near The Cricket Pitch on their own, or with their household family members, to lay a wreath & honour our fallen. Lest We Forget
