15.01.2022 Arthritis is one of the main problems that senior pets face, and often worsens after resting, vigorous exercise or cold weather. Now that winter is well and truly upon us, its important to take into account how to help manage arthritis in our pets. Arthritis medications are crucial in helping your pet manage arthritis. These come in the form of an inject-able medication that increases joint health and help control the pain of the disease. Good nutrition and weight control ar...e also important factors of managing arthritis. A high quality diet that is scientifically formulated for pets with arthritis or who are predisposed or at risk of arthritis is essential, alongside ensuring your pet is a healthy weight to avoid any additional pressure on already affected joints. Supplements in the form of chews, gel or granules have also been shown to provide good results for pets suffering from arthritis. These supplements contain ingredients such as glucosamine, which are known to be the building blocks of cartilage. There are a number of different treatment options and plans for arthritis, for both your pet and you. If you suspect your pet may be suffering from joint stiffness or pain, give us a call on (07) 3201 8862 to book a consult today!

15.01.2022 When it comes to our pets, we do everything to keep them safe. In QLD it is mandatory to have your pet microchipped, usually placed at their first vaccination! Microchips are the size of a grain of rice, cheap, and can literally save your pets life! Microchips hold a specific number that only your pet has, which is linked to not only information about your pet, but also your contact information should your pet ever escape, get lost or become impounded. Microchips last forever..., so its important to ensure your details are up to date on the microchips record! Make sure you update your contact details anytime you move or change numbers. If youre unsure what your microchip number is, be sure to give us a call and well check our records, or we can organise a time for you to come in and have your pet scanned! Our lovely nurses can also help you if youre unsure how to check details on your microchip! Your pets safety is our priority, so make sure you dont forget to check the chip!

Guinea pigs arent pigs, and they dont come from Guinea! They originated in the Andes. Guinea pigs are unable to make their own vitamin C, so its important to ensure their diet contains sufficient supplement amounts!... Guinea pigs have 4 toes on the forefoot and 3 on the hind foot. A baby guinea pig can run from 3 hours old! Guinea pigs teeth are constantly growing so its important for them to chew to wear them down! Do you have a guinea pig? Drop a photo of them below! Were here for you and all your exotic pet needs, give us a call or book online for a consult today!

12.01.2022 Arthritis is one of the most common health concerns seen in mature aged pets, but it can unfortunately affect our furry friends at any age. But how do we know if our pets have arthritis? Arthritis causes changes within the affected joints, creating pain for our furry friends. The pain is responsible for many of the signs of arthritis. Limping in our pets can mean many things, however it is also a sign of arthritis. Your pet may favour one or more of their legs. Limping in re...gards to arthritis may look worse as your pet first stands, and seems to get better as they move around and warm their joints. A telltale sign of arthritis is a change in movement. If you notice your pet no longer doing things that were easy for them, such as jumping into the car or onto bed, it is likely due to pain and discomfort caused by arthritis. Arthritis doesnt only affect the legs, it can also affect the spine. A sore neck, an abnormal posture such as a hunch in the back, or lameness in the hind legs suggest that there is arthritis in the spine. Other signs of arthritis can be tiredness or less energy, irritability or sudden change in mood. Licking, chewing or biting the area can also be a sign, resulting in other issues due to inflamed skin and hair loss over the affected areas. There are many different options for arthritis treatment in our pets. Its important to continue annual health checks with our pets, even if we cant see anything out of the ordinary. If youre concerned about your pet and arthritis, give us a call or book online for a senior consult today!

11.01.2022 Exercise is an important part of life for our pets, and it shouldnt stop in their golden years! As our pets age, their mobility is likely going to decline. 10.01.2022 Are you ready for some dog nutrition facts? Adult dogs require sufficient nutrients to meet energy needs and to maintain and repair body tissues. The amount you feed your adult dog should be based on their size and energy output. Activity levels may vary dramatically between pets, and will play an important role in determining caloric intake. Highly-digestible and high-quality proteins are essential in providing your dog with the building blocks for cell growth in their b...ody. A balanced food should contain healthy ingredients, including protein from an animal source, vegetables, whole grains and micro-nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids. Salt is an important component of your dogs diet and has a crucial role to play in his well being, however excessive salt intake may lead to increased blood pressure and aggravate the signs of heart disease. Wheat gluten is one of the most digestible sources of protein for dogs. It contains as much as 80% protein and approximately 99% is digested when it is part of their diet. Feeding your dog doesnt have to be difficult, despite their breeds differing nutritional needs! If you have any questions or concerns give us a call to chat to our lovely vets or nurses today!

10.01.2022 As your pets age, their nutritional needs change! Diets should be adjusted to suit life stages and keep our pets at their best! Our senior pets require specifically formulated food for their age, to ensure their key nutritional requirements are covered. As our pets age, their energy and metabolism slows so they require a different balance of protein and fat in their diets. Age-specific foods also include ingredients that promote joint health, which is a necessity for our gold...en oldies! If youre unsure on what diet would be best for your pet, give us a call on (07) 3201 8862 to chat to our lovely nurses today! Drop a photo below of your precious pet!

09.01.2022 Did you know that up to 80% of dogs and 70% of cats will suffer from gum disease at some point in their lives, and poor dental health can seriously affect a senior pets overall well-being? Dental care is important for your pets of all ages, but especially for our golden oldies. Pain in the mouth caused by gum disease can prevent your pet from eating, as well as affect their appetite. Bacteria can make its way from the gums and into the bloodstream, affecting the heart, kidne...ys, liver and other important bodily functions. Our senior pets are especially at risk of these issues, as immune systems can already be compromised. Keeping your pets teeth and gums clean can improve their overall health, help ward off diseases and reduce pain. For our senior pets with existing dental disease, a dental treatment with a scale and polish under general anaesthetic is often necessary to get their mouth back in top condition. Not sure where to start with your senior pets dental hygiene? Send us a message or give us a call on (07) 3201 8862 today!

08.01.2022 One of the most common issues our pets face, during any stage of their lives, is excess weight. Excess weight is especially a danger to our senior pets, as little as 20% extra weight can not only cause a risk of living a shorter life, but also increase the likelihood of serious conditions such as osteoarthritis, urinary troubles, and cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Osteoarthritis can also be caused by excess weight, as extra weight causes extra stress on the joints, ...causing issues with your pets mobility. Excess weight, if left untreated, can lead to a serious decline in your pets quality of life. If youre concerned about your pets weight, give us a call on (07) 3201 8862 to chat to our lovely vets and nurses today!

07.01.2022 When switching pet foods its important to gradually transition from one to the other to avoid potential digestive issues, diarrhoea or food rejection. You should begin the transition by mixing both the current and new foods together, gradually decreasing the old food while increasing the new food. This transition should occur over a 7-day period for better acceptance of the new food! However if you have an older cat, the transition time could take 10 days or longer.... Need more advice? 06.01.2022 Much like us, dogs and cats can sometimes get lumps and bumps, and while they might look innocent some of these mysterious lumps and bumps may be cancer. Cancers of the skin and soft tissues below the skin are amongst the most common cases that we as vets see. These lumps can vary in appearance and can feel soft or firm, sometimes may be covered with normal skin or have a bleeding or irritated surface or some may not look bad at all! Whether the lump or bump is benign or mali...gnant, its important to get these checked as soon as they appear, by either taking a sample or fine needle aspirate of the lump, or performing surgery to remove the lumps completely. If youre concerned about lumps and bumps on your pet, its best to have a vet check to ensure your pet is protected! Give us a call or book online today!

03.01.2022 Guinea pigs make a fantastic, lovable pet, but they do require different care to that of our furry cats and dogs! However, much like cats and dogs, its important that your guinea pig has regular health check-ups, this helps detect illness early and ensure the right foundation for your guinea pigs best life! Your guinea pig requires parasite prevention just like any other pet, however they are less affected by fleas and worms than their furry housemates. Lice and mites are a... common issue with guinea pigs and its important to ensure they are protected against these pesky creatures, as they can cause intense itchiness and scabs. Its important to provide your pet with a range of food types from an early age, such as fresh fruit, vegetables, good quality hay and breed specific pellets. Providing them with numerous options to chew also helps file their teeth down, as a guinea pigs teeth never stop growing! Much like our furry friends, its recommended that you desex your guinea pig, especially in multi-pig households. This ensures a calm temperament, reduces the likelihood of serious diseases, and avoids unwanted litters! Housing for your guinea pig is incredibly important to ensure they stay their happiest and healthiest self! Cages should be kept inside as warmer weather - 27 degrees celsius and above, can cause heat stroke. Each guinea pig should have 0.5 square meters of floor space, and be provided plenty of toys as well as hiding hutches to escape to! Does your guinea pig need its annual health check? Give us a call or book online for an exotic consult today!

01.01.2022 Are you ready for some cat nutrition facts? Cats are obligate carnivores! This means they have shorter and more acidic digestive tracts than others, which easily digests meat and fat. It also means they rely on meat to supply the vast majority of their needed nutrients! Cats require taurine! Taurine is an essential amino acid, found in meat and fish, which is necessary in feline nutrition!... Fatty acids are essential for many of the bodys functions, such as providing the body with energy and the absorption of fat soluble vitamins. Not just any fat will do, cats need both the fatty acids linoleic acid and arachidonic acid, most popularly found in poultry! Although cats rely on meat for most of their nutritional needs, they also need plants in their diet! Thiamine, a B vitamin, is an essential nutrient found in plants, and cats need as much as 5 times the amount than dogs do! Cats shouldnt fast for more than a day, as this can cause serious problems such as hepatic lipidosis - a serious and sometimes fatal liver disease. When animals fast, the body moves fat from its reserves to the liver to be converted to energy - a cats body however is not designed to process large amounts of fat and the liver quickly becomes overwhelmed and fails. Feeding your cat doesnt have to be difficult, despite their unique nutritional needs! If you have any questions or concerns give us a call to chat to our lovely vets or nurses today!

01.01.2022 Does your pet need a cuddle from Dr Scott like 13yo Corgi Idris? Dr Scott is back in clinic 8AM - 6PM Monday and 8.15AM - 1.15PM for the next two weeks! Give us a call on (07) 3201 8862 or book online to get your pet in with Dr Scott today! ... Post a picture of your furry friend below!

01.01.2022 Parvo Alert Recently there have been numerous reported positive cases of Parvovirus in the Ipswich, surrounds and all over SE QLD. Parvovirus is a deadly disease that attacks the intestines, causing internal bleeding and severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Treatment requires intensive care nursing, intravenous fluid therapy and unfortunately isnt always successful.... Unfortunately parvo isnt just spread by direct dog to dog contact, it can be spread on the paws of dogs, on our shoes or other items contaminated with the virus such as bedding and soil. The best protection for your pet is prevention through crucial vaccinations. Puppies require 3 vaccinations to be completely protected from parvo, as well as other dangerous infectious diseases. However parvo doesnt just affect our young dogs, it can infect unprotected dogs of any age. Keeping up to date with your pets annual vaccination wont only keep them safe, but it will save you from the costly bills, and potential heartbreak, that comes with treating parvovirus. Not sure on when your pet is due? Give us a call or hop online to book an appointment today!
