23.01.2022 With this year’s Mental Health Week theme Take Time for Mental Health it’s a great time to consider the value of our mental health and what we can do to improve it. Typically, when people list why they exercise they reference weight loss, fitness or strength. Rarely does depression or anxiety treatment make the list. This is no surprise given that for many years talking therapies have been the go to for treatment of these conditions. Exercise enthusiasts regularly preach... the mood benefits of exercise and we are now blessed with a wealth of research on this topic to back up the feeling. A dive into the research suggests two things; exercise to be an anti-depressant with both short-term and long-term benefits; and a sedentary lifestyle to be a depressant. Why we need to see exercise as medicine for the brain is an article we recently published in the Hills, Health Hub publication and is an excellent piece to get us thinking about how or what we can do to improve our mental health through exercise. 16.01.2022 Therapy - What is it and what do I get out of it? Therapy is a broad term which covers lots of different disciplines and modalities. Generally, it is either individual 1:1 therapy with a mental health worker, or a group... therapy facilitated by a therapist. Pine Rivers Private Hospital focuses on Group Based Therapy as its primary form of treatment. Our Inpatient Group timetable offers groups across 3 sessions a day Monday Friday along with weekend Sessions encouraging family participation. Therapy is an intentional activity where you spend time exploring aspects of your life with a trusted other (or others), looking for insights, solutions and shifts in perspective. It can help in many ways, including: Identify and change negative patterns and beliefs Allow you to feel emotions which may have been held in for a long time Provide a safe and confidential space to unburden thoughts and feelings Help you feel validated, understood and heard Heal attachment trauma through forming positive relationships Motivate you to change or improve circumstances Which therapy is right for you? As we are different, it’s hard to recommend one therapy style over another, however research has made clear the utmost importance of trusting relationships in therapy. Our General Inpatient Programs provide inpatients with comprehensive therapeutic services aimed at supporting recovery and health through the delivery of sessions that address: Psycho-education and recovery skills Social and communication skills Personal development and life skills Healthy lifestyle education and activities Creates and recreates therapy Community info and life skills To find out more about the therapy options we offer at Pine Rivers Private Hospital head to; https://pineriversprivatehospital.com.au//group-based-ther

13.01.2022 What is Anxiety? Anxiety is a normal and adaptive reaction to perceived threat or stressful situations. However, Anxiety Disorders differ in that the fear or anxiety experienced is excessive and persistent in duration. There are many types of anxiety disorders, with some of the more common presentations including: Generalised Anxiety which is characterised by excessive worry, ... Phobias, characterised by marked fear or anxiety about a specific situation or object, Social Anxiety, in which the fear is with regard to potential for scrutiny in public situations, Panic Disorder, characterised by unexpected and recurrent intense surges of panic symptoms, and Agoraphobia, in which the intense fear or anxiety related to particular situations (e.g. public transport, open or enclosed spaces, crowds, outside of the home), and potential inability to escape, leads to avoidance of such situations. The evidence based treatments for managing anxiety disorder include both medical and psychological treatments. Your psychiatrist will assess your condition and prescribe medication suitable to your needs. 02.01.2022 R U OK? DAY A Conversation could change a life... By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not ok, you can follow our conversation steps to show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are ok, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask.... Before you can look out for others, you need to look out for yourself. And that’s ok. If you're not in the right headspace or you don't think you're the right person to have the conversation, try to think of someone else in their support network who could talk to them. To help you decide whether you’re ready to start a meaningful conversation, ask yourself: AM I READY? Am I in a good headspace? Am I willing to genuinely listen? Can I give as much time as needed? AM I PREPARED? Do I understand that if I ask how someone’s going, the answer could be: No, I’m not? Do I understand that you can’t ‘fix’ someone’s problems? Do I accept that they might not be ready to talk? Or they might not want to talk to me? PICKED MY MOMENT? Have I chosen somewhere relatively private and comfy? Have I figured out a time that will be good for them to chat? Have I made sure I have enough time to chat properly? #RUOKDay If you or a loved one are in need of help, Pine Rivers Private hospital has a range of inpatient and outpatient programs treating a range of diagnosis including; Anxiety, Bipolar, Depressive Disorders, OCD, Schizophrenia and Pychosis.
