12.01.2022 NAIDOC Week (8-15 November) In childcare we discussed how Aboriginal people have been caring for the land and animals for thousands of years and have taught us to also care for the land and animals and each other. The children in the 4 year old kindergarten program painted their hand prints, cut them out and decorated Bunjil the Eagle (Wurundjeri people’s Creator Spirit) and Waa the Crow (cultural hero and ancestral being). www.naidoc.org.au Remembrance Day (11th November)... As part of Remembrance Day, in our group time yesterday, we talked about what it means for us today. We spoke about remembering the men and women who went to serve in Wars to keep Australia safe and that some of them were injured and some did not come back home. We read two books; Lest we Forget and Alfred’s War. Alfred was an aboriginal man who had been homeless before he joined the army as a soldier and during the war his leg got hurt. Some children painted Poppies using colours from the Aboriginal Flag. At 11.00 am we all closed our eyes and didn’t talk for one minute while we thought of all the brave men and women who went to the war. #pineslearning #learnlocal #learnlocally #communityhouse #remembranceday2020 #lestweforget #poppy #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek

She has a reputation for her can do, inclusive leadership style as well as her compassion for vulnerable people, her sense of social justice together with the many practical kindnesses she has extended to those who need a helping hand. We had a farewell dinner for Christine at a local Thai restaurant, Thao Khip, whilst it was sad to say goodbye we had a fun night out with great food, home grown entertainment and a number of speeches sharing highlights of Christine’s contribution to our Centre. 01.01.2022 NAIDOC Week (8-15 November) During this week students in our EAL program also focused on NAIDOC week and reflected on this ancient civilisation and country we have decided to call home. The EAL students discussed how Indigenous Australians are the oldest living continuing culture on the planet and that studies have shown Aboriginal Australians ancestries’ stretch back an incredible 75,000 years. ... They learnt that this week recognises and celebrates the fact that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this land for some 60,000 years and during this week we are all asked to reflect on this and embrace the (really) ancient history of this country. When Europeans first arrived in Australia, there were approximately 950,000 Aboriginal people living across this vast continent. They had never seen white-skinned people before and records show they thought Europeans were ghosts, which is understandable. NAIDOC can be traced back to 1938 to the first Aboriginal Rights movement when, on Australia Day, protesters marched through the streets of Sydney protesting about the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. It wasn’t until 1962 that Aboriginal people were allowed to vote and even later, in 1967, were they counted in the census! This year’s theme Always was, Always will be reflects this ancient history of living and caring for country. www.naidoc.org.au #pineslearning #learnlocal #learnlocally #communityhouse #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek #EAL #EALatpineslearnin
