18.01.2022 As part of the @International Art Space Spaced 4 Rural Utopias Pingelly artist residency with Mike Bianco, Pingelly community members were invited to a free bookbinding workshop led by Pingelly artist and craftswoman Jean Hall. Jean demonstrated how to make a Junk Journal, using a range recycled/ repurposed materials including thick cardboard, wallpaper, upholstery fabric samples, a range of papers, handmade beads made from magazines, floorboard samples and more! A selec...tion of Jean’s beautiful handmade books were on display. The workshop started with participants unknowingly contributing to a beautiful finished communally made journal, that one lucky participant received to keep, as the result of a raffle draw at the end of the workshop. 11 participants were guided through the process of making their own small junk journal, and each participant created a unique hand crafted book to take home. Thank you to Jean for sharing her skills, expertise and beautiful work, and to Mike Bianco and Sue Traber for working with Jean to make this workshop available. Thank you also to the Pingelly Arts and Craft Group for the provision of a perfect venue for the workshop; - the Pingelly RSL Hall is a welcoming space with lovely light for crafting! A big thanks also, to the Pingelly Men's Shed for fabricating the book binding devices used during this workshop! These devices will be housed with the Pingelly Arts and Craft group for community use. This project is made possible with support from the Pingelly Community resource Centre and though funding from International Art Space, Spaced 4 Rural Utopias.

17.01.2022 16 Days in WA Day 7 Financial abuse (also known as economic abuse) is a form of domestic violence that is not often talked about, but can have a severe impact on the security and wellbeing of the abused partner, as well as children/dependants. It has been estimated that 15% of Australian women have experienced financial abuse and there has been a marked increase in the number of women over 50 finding themselves in situations of financial hardship.... Many women are not aware they are victims of financial abuse. YourToolkit: https://yourtoolkit.com.au/ details the 4 stages to freedom and provides you with access to the services you need to change your circumstances. #16DaysInWA #StopTheViolence #RespectStartsWithMe

04.01.2022 16 Days in WA Day 4 Sexual assault, financial abuse, stalking and technology-facilitated abuse are all forms of violence against women. Is it love or control...... Take the quiz and find out. #16DaysInWA #StopTheViolence #RespectStartsWithMe http://lovegoodbadugly.com/quiz-is-it-love-or-control/

04.01.2022 Tomorrow, the 25th November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and marks the start of 16 Days in WA, the WA led campaign since 2017, working to help end violence against women in our community. Do you know? In 2019, the most common age group for people experiencing family and domestic violence-related assault in Western Australia was 25 to 34 years.... Children living in families with family and domestic violence are more likely to experience low self esteem, learning difficulties, behavioural problems, depression, bullying and homelessness with long-term impacts on their wellbeing. Childhood trauma is a major contributor to adolescents’ use of violence in the home. This is partly due to social learning, where adolescents are exposed to intimate partner violence that they then copy. Trauma has a significant impact on the child’s ability to learn, communicate and regulate emotions and behaviour. The Pingelly CRC has installed a window of orange to support this campaign and to help to raise awareness around the many forms that violence against women can take. We hope you will join us and get on board to make it clear that sexism and disrespecting women will not be accepted in our community. #16DaysInWA #StopTheViolence #RespectStartsWithMe If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic and family violence, you can call: 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732) or visit www.1800RESPECT.org.au

04.01.2022 16 Days in WA Day 3 Respect starts with YOU If someone is acting inappropriately towards a woman, call it out intervene. Say something like that’s not ok you’re scaring her.... Don’t ignore locker room banter, jokes and sexism challenge it. If you are concerned about a family member or friend, be confident to ask if everything is okay and if they are safe at home. Believe reports of violence offer support not suspicion. Don’t ask Why doesn’t she leave? ask, Why is he violent?. Be conscious not to put the blame on the woman. Importantly, be safe. Calling out inappropriate language and behaviour can be hard and uncomfortable, but it should not come at the expense of your safety and dignity. #16DaysInWA #StopTheViolence #RespectStartsWithMe

31.12.2021 What a fabulous informative Reptile Awareness session we had with Lisa from Perth Reptile Company Pingelly Recreation & Cultural Centre - PRACC on Thursday 2nd December. This event was open to the public, and the entire Pingelly Primary School attended as well! We learned all about what to do in the event of a snake bite, about various Western Australian reptiles, their habits and habitats, and heaps of interesting information about reptiles in general. Snake bite first aid... kits were available for purchase at the event from the Pingelly St John Ambulance Sub Centre. The highlight of the afternoon was the opportunity to hold and touch the beautiful pythons, lizards and even a turtle brought for us to meet. Just about everyone, even some of those nervous around snakes held or touched a snake or two. This event was brought to our community by the PRACC nd Pingelly Community Resource Centre in partnership. Pingelly PS Perth Reptile Company
