01.01.2022 Ovarian cancer doesn't discriminate based on profession or age. Nurse, Annabel D. shared her journey with us, have read below. "I was diagnosed with stage 4 in July 2019 at the age of 46 - complete shock - I left work on a Friday and was diagnosed the following Wednesday - I had been feeling tired and had put on weight but just thought work was taking its toll and I've always struggled with my weight. ... I'm a nurse and none of the symptoms made me seek medical attention prior. Over the weekend I developed a temperature and felt really bloated and had some urinary urgency - I had an ultrasound which showed ascites and my GP sent me to emergency. CT scan showed a suspicious area and the ascites were drained - 5.2L and it showed Ovarian Cancer Stage 4. I started chemo 7 days later - I had 3 cycles and then surgery and then had another 3 cycles. With each cycle I got more side effects - feeling really tired, sore mouth, not interested in food, constipated and just felt horrible. I lost my hair suddenly - after cycle 1 - I started to notice hair on my pillows and clothing but then I went to wash my hair and it just came out in clumps -covering the floor of the shower - very traumatic. But 1 year after I finished chemo I have a thick head of hair - it does grow back and I just covered it with beanies and then suddenly decided that people could just cope - I got a Henna Crown down as a way of showing that I was fine with my baldness. I had to stop working as I was at high risk - so financially a huge drain - I had to give up my flat and move in with my parents - there is no support for people of my age - I was told I was too young for help but I wasn't too young to develop the cancer. Now I try and raise awareness - I feel a responsibility as a nurse to educate people about the cancer and since being diagnosed I am saddened by the lack of equal funding and public support - we need more equal funding and it is time to get the survival rates up for Ovarian cancer - My life and other people with Ovarian matter just the same as anyone else."
