25.01.2022 A Slovenian woman has been found guilty of deliberately sawing off her own hand in an effort to receive compensation. A court in the capital Ljubljana found that Julija Adlesic, 22, had taken out five insurance policies in the year before her injury. She fraudulently claimed the injury happened as she was cutting branches as she stood to receive almost $1.5 million in compensation. She was recently sentenced to two years in prison, while her boyfriend who assisted in the fra...ud has been given a three-year sentence. Adlesic and a number of relatives were arrested in 2019 after she arrived in hospital with her hand cut off above the wrist. The court found that she and her boyfriend had intentionally left the severed hand behind rather than bringing it with them to ensure the disability was permanent and to ensure she also received monthly benefits. However, authorities recovered the hand in time to sew it back on. Prosecutors said the woman's boyfriend had also conducted internet searches about artificial hands in the days beforehand. Prosecutors said this was part of the proof that the injury was intentional. Adlesic kept her reattached hand under a blanket throughout the sentencing hearing.

20.01.2022 CAUTION TO PARENTS AND GUARDIANS OF ALL YOUNG CHILDREN. The trafficking and production of child abuse material has exploded during the corona-virus lock-down in Victoria. Paedophiles are turning to online games and social media platforms to groom isolated children. New figures from Victoria Police show the number of child abuse images and videos being traded online in Victoria has more than doubled in the last year.... At least 7.4 million files of child abuse material were detected circulating on networks in Victoria in May 2020 alone - a number that police believe is likely to be a significant underestimate of the true level of activity. While there’s been a lot of talk about a decline in the overall crime rate during isolation, one of the crime types that has taken off is child exploitation. Investigators and senior officers from JACET - (JOINT ANTI CHILD EXPLOITATION TEAMS) with the Australian Federal Police that targets online child abuse - said the law enforcement community has detected numerous of other online disturbing trends. The prolonged lock-down period and increased time children are spending online has also raised massive concerns for JACET, which has been using covert operatives to infiltrate social media and encrypted chat groups to target paedophiles. Officers are constantly investigating suspect behaviour in online games. Many parents are unaware that their children could be exposed to predators through Xbox and Playstation consoles that have text and audio chat functions. Children can be groomed in a matter of minutes as these offenders are often master manipulators and their operations can be quite sophisticated.
18.01.2022 JOB KEEPER FRAUDSTERS BEWARE. An anonymous tip-off line has been established for members of the community who are concerned their neighbours, co-workers, family members or even friends are defrauding the ATO. Those found to be defrauding the taxpayer purse with Job Keeper will be hit with massive financial penalties, prosecution and imprisonment for the most serious cases.... Intelligence is being gathered to establish the authenticity of claims including the withdrawal of money from superannuation and re-contributing it to get a tax deduction. Other schemes include manipulating turnover to satisfy eligibility requirements. Tip offs will be assessed using third party sources, data provided to them from income tax returns, super funds and other intelligence gathering means. The ATO has advised Job Keeper is designed to assist those experiencing hardship and any exploitation of the measure will not be tolerated.

17.01.2022 Could this have been the very first spy drone? In 1908, Dr Julius Neubronner patented a miniature pigeon camera activated by a timing mechanism. The invention brought him international notability after he presented it at international conference in Dresden, Frankfurt and Paris in 19091911. ... He used the pigeons to deliver urgent medications up to 75g (2.6oz) however they weren’t very reliable. One of his pigeons lost its orientation in fog and mysteriously returned four weeks later. The cameras were used to trace their paths which also proved unreliable. Interest was then made from the military for aerial pigeon photography during World War 1, however the rapid advancement of aviation during the war saw interest quickly fade. The United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) later developed a battery-powered camera designed for espionage pigeon photography. Details of its use remain classified.

15.01.2022 SPYING AND THREATS DURING COVID PANDEMIC. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) has been working with medical institutions and scientific organisations to ensure their highly sought-after research is not stolen. ASIO director-general Mike Burgess said, "There is great interest in medical breakthroughs sometimes it can be done through covert means [and] that is on the rise."... He said spies and terrorists had used COVID-19 to their advantage, with extremist ideology spreading quickly because more people were online. Traditionally, major gatherings have been a target for terrorists. But most large events have been cancelled and shopping centre crowds are much smaller due to coronavirus restrictions. Despite that, Mr Burgess said the threat was still real. "Maybe shopping centres aren't busy but sadly hospitals are - so people who chose to do those things have other ways to cause harm, he said. Mr Burgess also said the level of foreign interest in Australia's defence sector now was the same as "at the height of the Cold War".
14.01.2022 How cool is this? Made in Japan between 1954 to 1956, this is the Doryu pistol-shaped camera that was developed for police and surveillance tasks, specifically to secure photographic evidence. The first Doryu camera was the Doryu 1, taking 9.5mm film, which was completed in 1952 and abandoned for durability problems. The company immediately began to develop its successor the Doryu 2, taking 16mm film.... The device was shaped as an automatic pistol, with a hand-grip and a trigger. The total weight was 582g. The rear part was a very realistic gun looking hand-grip which contained a magazine (just like a bullet magazine of a real pistol). It was loaded with six magnesium cartridges and each cartridge contained a 0.8 gram of magnesium powder. The trigger would fire the magnesium cartridge, burning the magnesium powder through the aperture at the top, illuminating the scene up to a distance of 15m outdoors, and 20m indoors. The temperature was extremely high and there were always risks of severe burning if the cartridge fired in your hand or face. It was a very complex camera which wasn’t very reliable but apparently, it took good night shots. It failed to meet the specifications of Japanese authorities and was discontinued, but released to the public for sale. It is very rare, and if you find one on Ebay, expect to pay around $10,000 to $20,000. (But we don’t recommend taking photos in public with it )

10.01.2022 Amazing artwork from All Detective magazine. All Detective Magazine started life as a very thin pulp magazine (from Dell Publishing Company) that initially sold for 5c. The August 1934 issue was notable for introducing the character "Doctor Death" who was so popular that the magazine was renamed Doctor Death in February 1935. There were also two separate British reprint editions - one that allegedly saw three issues in 1933 under the title All Star Detective Stories and at le...ast one more issue under the title All Detective Magazine. A single issue was said to have lasted in 1955 or thereabouts, under the title All Detective. There were about 15-20 different Detective magazines circulating back then but the All Detective magazine had some of the most amazing and detailed illustrations created by different artists. One of the legendary artists was Lyman Anderson who started his career in 1929 completing illustrations for Clues, Battle Stories, Ace-High, Dime Western, Frontier Stories, Radid Fire Detective, Star Western, Thrilling Detective, Thrilling Love, Triple-X, Action Stories, Alibi, All Western, Western Romances, and Underworld Detective Magazine. Lyman Anderson also created many advertisments for brand-name companies, such as General Electric, Goodyear, Mobil Oil, Pan-American Airlines, Pepsi, and Proctor & Gamble. Check out some of these amazing front covers from All Detective magazine.

04.01.2022 For almost 20 years now, a township in Michigan has been dealing with a serial FLASHER. This guy would expose himself in front of people’s homes or in front of businesses, knock on the window, then start masturbating. Police could never catch him until he finally slipped up. In the past few months, the 56-year-old man was targeting one woman in particular. So, she decided to install security cameras, which helped police capture the man's license plate from a distance. ... After some good old fashion surveillance work, they caught the man in the act. The man confessed to all the flashings that’s been going down since 2003. He is a husband and a father, he was respected at work and respected at church, but had a secret hobby as a flasher who eluded police for almost 20 years. He’s been charged with indecent exposure as a sexually delinquent person.

02.01.2022 Some good news for Private Investigators. Many people on a daily basis purchase ‘spy’ products online for the purpose of spying on their partner. These products can range from GPS trackers to computer spyware and hidden cameras. Not only are most of these products cheap, nasty and unreliable, but the use and installation can be highly illegal as stalking is a serious crime. This causes massive privacy issues when members of the public play detective with no idea of privacy la...ws and the use of surveillance technology. Commencing mid-August, Google will be banning any advertising relating to spyware and surveillance technology. Google specifies that spyware and technology used for intimate partner surveillance and similar related products will be prohibited. Examples include software that monitor texts, phone calls and internet browsing. It also includes hardware, such as GPS trackers meant to spy without consent, or cameras/recorders marketed with the purpose of spying. Exceptions to this rule allow for Private Investigators and service ads with applicable products. This will bring back some market share to professional Private Investigators.
02.01.2022 A man has appeared at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court recently after he was charged by detectives from the Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (JACET) as part of an ongoing investigation. The investigation related to a number of alleged online offences relating to child abuse material. JACET detectives executed a warrant at his property and seized a range of electronic devices.... The 25-year-old Rowville man was subsequently arrested by police and charged with numerous offences and was remanded in custody. A number of victims have been identified at three schools in Melbourne’s south east suburbs. Police are working closely with those schools to ensure the relevant support is in place for the victims. Victoria Police encourages parents and carers to be proactive and have regular discussions with young people about online safety and risks. They should also monitor their children’s online activity and if required, have access to their child’s device and online accounts so risky behavior can be identified as early as possible. It’s so important that everyone understands the warning signs of unwanted contact, how to protect your privacy online, and how to report any suspicious activity. For more information and access to tools, resources and advice, as well as reporting and support services, please visit www.thinkuknow.org.au, www.accce.gov.au and www.esafety.gov.au Anyone with any information about online offending is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
