15.01.2022 Weve been a bit quiet for the past three months as weve been soaking up the sand and sun of Rottnest Island while on Long Service Leave but weve been missing getting our hands dirty! This week we volunteered to give the gorgeous Lomas Cottage Kitchen Garden a bit of a makeover by pruning and fertilising the heritage varieties of citrus, grapes, olives and mulberries! It was great fun to get back into a garden and we cant wait to see the fruits of our labors thanks must go to our highly skilled team back home who have continued to service our existing clients!!!

14.01.2022 Growing your own food is something we are passionate about here at Pint Sized Plots and we can certainly help you out in that department but if youd like to have a go at growing things you have around the house check out this great graphic (courtesy of Whole Foods Market and Cooking Stoned via pinterest). It provides some great free examples to help get you growing

13.01.2022 Have you ever thought of saving seeds from your plants that are going to seed? By doing this you can cheaply and easily grow new plants from seed when the season is right. We simply collect the seeds from plants that are putting seeds out- our favourites are basil as they are prolific seeders- dry them out in a paper bag, then bag them up- we use little paper envelopes that we write the plant name on. If youd like more information have a look at this article on Seed Saving Basics https://gardentherapy.ca/seed-saving/ from Garden Therapy :-)

13.01.2022 South West people - have you been to Margaret Rivers Organic Garden??? A stunning organic garden featuring a range of "rooms", plants and styles on Margaret Rivers main street right next to the TAFE. This garden has been operating for 31 years and is a beautiful example of community ownership. They have just launched a coffee table book called Wednesdays Garden documenting the Gardens history and its stories. It is well worth a look if you are down that way :-)

12.01.2022 Here in the South West of Western Australia we are so fortunate with our reasonably mild conditions. When paying friends of ours a visit for their monthly maintenance package we were glad to see they are are still enjoying bountiful basil harvests. Asparagus, chillies, leeks, sage, time, mint, oregano and parsley are also going strong with steady growth on their feature fruit trees. Would you like to get this much produce or more from your backyard? Just drop us a line or give us a call. Wed love to hear from you

12.01.2022 Stinging nettles are a prolific weed here on Rottnest Island and they are lush - and stingy- and fresh right now. While were here for 3 months on Long Service Leave weve tried Stinging Nettle Soup which has been a great success. A sprinkle of Parmesan cheese and its a beautiful, hearty winter dish. Heres the recipe in case you want to try it https://www.allrecipes.com/rec/165071/stinging-nettle-soup/ - the only difference was we put in 3/4 of a cup of rice not 1/4 - our mistake!

07.01.2022 We all know that learning how to grow and cook your own food are important life skills and have a really valuable role in primary and high schools across Australia. 07.01.2022 Mojos Bunbury have expanded on the success of their in situ vegie garden that has been providing fresh produce for their kitchen for over two years to include a brand new bush tucker Plot featuring Australian varieties of bush tucker. In an effort to elevate the South West dining experience new Chef Chris Mitchell, previously of award winning Voyager Estate and Morries in Margaret River, has brought to the venue an innovative take on food and dining reinforcing the establishm...ents commitment to quality local, seasonal produce. As a result the team have established a dedicated vegie patch at their Bunbury venue consisting of a brand new Pint Sized Plot featuring a range of indigenous bush tucker as well as their existing Plot featuring traditional edible plants. Pint Sized Plots, a local SW social enterprise aiming to enable anyone to grow food anywhere, has been very happy to build on the initial collaboration with Mojos Restaurant Bunbury to provide and install another Pint Sized Plot for the purpose of growing more local produce to service the Restaurant- this time in the form of bush tucker. Mojos Restaurant Manager and dynamic young restauranteur Jake Atkinson explains the reasons behind this new approach for the restaurant and menu weve always been passionate about local produce and now we are keen to explore the use of indigenous plants. Having our own stock of these plants means that our customers get the freshest most seasonal ingredients without the food miles of trucking things across the country Chef Chris Mitchell enthuses about the use of bush tucker in contemporary Australian cuisine we have some of the best products in the world growing here in the South West. The use of bush tucker in restaurants should no longer be a novelty, it should be incorporated into all aspects of our menu and Im excited to see the plants grow and pick them directly from the Pint Sized Plot for use in my dishes Pint Sized Plots Owner and operator Deanna Furze talks about the partnership with Mojos Restaurant Bunbury we were ecstatic to partner with Mojos two years ago and resulting in a Pint Sized Plot installed here in Victoria Street as we believe it is a brilliant way to show people how they can grow their own food anywhere. When Mojos spoke to us about a second Pint Sized Plot dedicated to bush tucker we thought it was a great idea. We are stoked to see the Restaurants continued commitment to local, quality produce as well as supporting us, a small SW social enterprise

06.01.2022 While were here on Rottnest for three months Long Service Leave weve had fun foraging for wild olives and preserving them and theyve turned out beautifully! Weve loved sharing some with friends, family and local people weve met. If you want to try this at home our basic method is 1. Slit olives and soak in fresh water rinsing and changing the water daily for two weeks 2. Mix up some brine (approximately 1:10 salt to water) and soak olives in this for a further two weeks 3. Rinse olives and place in clean jars with olive oil and flavours of your preference, we used rosemary, garlic and chilli 4. Enjoy and share with others

02.01.2022 Now we dont like to talk dirty here at Pint Sized Plots but we do love to chat about dirt! Nearly a year ago we provided the Donnybrook Community Garden with their soil to get the garden going and 12 months on we are ecstatic to be invited to their opening to see the fruits (and vegetables) of the communities labour! Our soil has been independently tested and is comparable, if not better, than the leading maker and seller of soil in the State. It is packed full of bio-char t...o foster micro-organisms and reduce the need for chemical inputs. It will ensure your produce is cranking from the time it is planted and at least two years later!
