17.01.2022 Participants in an 18 month bushfire rehabilitation project in the Eungella district came together on Saturday, August 15. Landholders have been involved in a partnership between NQ Dry Tropics and Pioneer Catchment Landcare for the past year and a half to rehabilitate rainforest that was burnt in the November 2018 fires in the Eungella area. The high intensity fires devastated 110,000 hectares, and intruded 100 metres into the main rainforest as well as smaller isolated re...mnant rainforest patches. The region is known for its valuable, incredible biodiversity, its rainforests supporting endemic species and biota from both subtropical forests found in southern QLD and NSW, and wet rainforests of north QLD. "PCL is advocating for landholders and government agencies to support long term, strategic conservation activities to restore vegetative corridors on the Eungella range which will improve habitat for the variety of endemic and threatened species of fauna in the area," PCL Coordinator Nichole Zahra said The group met at a Mount Dalrymple landholder's property and walked to the dam to discuss a prior tree planting, had a look at a vetiver grass trial plot to try and fix up an area that was eroded by stock over time. The site was very steep and not planted densely enough, and there had not enough rain for it to really take off. The concept of remediation of erosion was discussed, and how using logs to slow flow can sometimes result in scouring in the apron of the flow in high rainfall events, so it’s best to get some professional advice if you can before making changes to slopes. Carolyn from Mackay Regional Council's Mackay Natural Environment Centre gave a great presentation on how to identify rainforest species, help available (books and Qld herbarium processes) and discussed plant propagation, seed collection, and availability to purchase from the MRC plant nursery in Mackay. Carolyn said there was also the option to gather seeds from your own property and ask them to be propagated for future projects you may have in mind. Tom (our fauna guy) and Peter (our plant guy) were also on hand to discuss the method behind and impacts of rainforest rehabilitation on wildlife. Also on hand was Regional Agriculture Landcare Facilitator Juliane Kasiske, providing information and support for landholders as part of her role with Reef Catchm. Pioneer Catchment and Landcare are keen to see further funding and partnership development achieved to build on this project. #EungellaBushfires2018 #BushfireRegeneration #PioneerCatchmentLandcare #NQDryTropics #MackayNaturalEnvironmentCentre #ReefCatchments #Landcare #Eungella
