25.01.2022 Another mystery photograph. Year? Location? Perhaps western side of Belmore St, Yarrawonga. Early 1900s ?
23.01.2022 1883-2020. For only the third time in its 137 year history, the Yarrawonga Show has been cancelled. This year, cancellation is due to an invisible enemy, COVID19. During World War 2, when the country faced another enemy, the Show was cancelled in 1940 and 1942.

21.01.2022 A warm evening for early October. As was this photo, taken in 1980.
21.01.2022 It's 20 years since the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Prior to the main event, the Olympic Torch marathon passed through Yarrawonga, on 15th August 2000. Local runners included Peter Bellis and Sally Gorman. Despite the wet weather, a large enthusiastic crowd lined Belmore Street.

20.01.2022 1951. Visiting the Infant Welfare Centre in Belmore Street. Located north adjacent to the Skewes grocery shop. Approximately opposite the Terminus Hotel.
20.01.2022 March 1960. Mulwala Savernake Road (locally known as the Five Chain) was sealed, much to the relief of the Savernake district. The road is 5 chains wide from fence to fence. Road works are continuing on the same road at the moment.
20.01.2022 1890s. Belmore St, looking south towards the intersection with Piper St. The white building on the southwest corner is the National Bank of Australasia. Opposite on the northwest corner is the ANZ bank. Both buildings were demolished, being replaced by today's structures.
17.01.2022 1980s. The 1924 traffic bridge, the Yarrawonga foreshore and Lake Mulwala are still focal points of the district tourist features.
17.01.2022 Circa 1950s. The 'Australien's" last cruise on Lake Mulwala. It had been much altered, including a diesel motor.

15.01.2022 A bumper harvest this year means long queues at receival stations. Consider a bumper harvest decades ago.... Slow horses, lots of dust, even longer queues, no air conditioning, sometimes camping overnight.
15.01.2022 The Governor of Victoria 1963-1974 was Sir Rohan Delacombe, who visited Yarrawonga in November 1973.
15.01.2022 This bus advertisement appeared in the 'Yarrawonga Chronicle and Riverina Advocate' on 1 October 1943 (wartime). Nicholson's bus service provided valuable community transport over many years.
15.01.2022 Yarrawonga Show 1969. John Barnes organized a Farm Bike competition. The competitors had to travel a certain distance at the slowest speed possible, without feet touching the ground. The Honda 50 was a popular bike in that era.

13.01.2022 A wonderful gathering today, a tribute to a fine Australian. Tim was very supportive of the Pioneer Museum in many ways, notably the recent Monash Exhibition.
13.01.2022 1951 Corowa had the main district airport for both state and interstate air travel. Yarrawonga residents could do a quick trip to either Sydney or Melbourne. In this era, you'd drive your car next to the DC3 plane and drop off your luggage for loading.
12.01.2022 1938 Yarrawonga Shire Hall. Patrons were entranced with the new 'talkie' movies. Even in the 1950s, musicals such as 'South Pacific', and 'Brigadoon' attracted enthusiastic crowds during winter months.

09.01.2022 In the mid 1950s, cinemascope arrived at the open air theatre. On the larger screen, locals enjoyed movies such as 'The King and I', 'Carousel', 'Lady and the Tramp'. Very popular with audiences of all ages.
08.01.2022 In late July 1931, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith arrived at Yarrawonga in his Fokker monoplane, as part of his barnstorming tour around the country. He landed in Browning's paddock, about 3 miles west of Yarrawonga. He charged 10/- for a flight over the town. Aviation history in the making.

07.01.2022 1951 Yarrawonga Rail Bridge, across Lake Mulwala. Since that time, it has had several upgrades to retain its safety, mainly carting goods trains of cereal grain from Oaklands and other sidings in NSW.
07.01.2022 The Yarrawonga Railway Bridge is often overlooked as a tourist attraction, its impressive foundations now hidden by the waters of Lake Mulwala. The Weir and Traffic bridges, being more iconic and used by the public, overshadow the Railway bridge, which is a masterpiece of engineering.
07.01.2022 Yarrawonga Show, 1958. Huge crowds, just as in Roman times, keenly followed the Chariot Race, which has now been banned. One year later, the classic movie 'Ben Hur' was released.

04.01.2022 Today marks 75 years since the end of World War 2. In 1995, the Historical Society commemorated Australia's war efforts by hosting a special exhibition 'Australia Remembers 1945-1995'.
04.01.2022 The 1960s and 1970s were the era of Country Halls hosting dances and balls. Every year, the Savernake Hall held 'The Sun Belle' Yarrawonga Hospital Ball, always a popular community fund-raising event.
04.01.2022 At our first on-site general meeting since March, a DVD about reminiscences of local droughts was screened. A presentation to Elaine Price from immediate past President Bill Gleeson recognizes her sterling efforts to protect and restore Yarrawonga's Railway Station, now a community hub for many organizations and functions.
