25.01.2022 Yesterday was World Pre=eclampsia Day. Pre-eclampsia is a disease that only occurs in pregnancy. In Australia mild pre-eclampsia occurs in 5-10% of pregnancies and severe pre-eclampsia in 1-2% of pregnancies. Although a rare, yet severe, pregnancy complication if left undetected and untreated it can have serious consequences for mum and her unborn baby The only way to cure pre-eclampsia is by birth of the baby. This is why it is a major cause of preterm birth. Pre-eclampsia ...can develop from 20 weeks of pregnancy, with most cases developing after 24-26 into pregnancy. It is impossible to predict with certainty who will suffer from Pre-eclampsia. Every woman should be considered at risk in her first pregnancy, although the risk is greater for those with a strong family history of the condition. Younger mothers (teenagers) and older mothers (those over 35 years of age) may also be at increased risk in their first pregnancies. That is why it is important that pre-eclampsia is diagnosed as soon as possible. World Pre-eclampsia Day is about raising the need for early risk assessment. We encourage doctors and pregnant women to act early and screen early. #ActEarlyScreenEarly #WorldPreeclampsiaDay2021 See more

18.01.2022 Can you believe it is even possible? Giving birth to nine babies. The most previously recorded is 8 babies. https://www.abc.net.au//nonuplets-nine-babies-ma/100123570

16.01.2022 Tomorrow, May 15, is International Kangaroo Care Awareness Day. This is a global event which has been celebrated since 2011 to raise awareness and highlight the physiological and psychological benefits of kangaroo care. Kangaroo care is the practice of skin to skin care between infant and parent. As most of you would be aware kangaroo care is especially important for babies born premature. The benefits of Kangaroo Care include regulating baby's heart rate and breathing, temperature stability. sleep organisation and duration of quiet sleep, neurodevelopmental outcomes, increases the chance of successful breastfeeding, modulation of pain responses and increased weight gain. For parents of preterm babies it promotes bonding and increases the sense of being a parent and being involved in the care of their baby while in the NICU/SCN.

08.01.2022 Thank you all for entering the Kangaroo Care Day Competition. All the photos were just wonderful and they took be back to my first cuddle with William 24 years ago. That first cuddle is something you never forget. Chris, the PIPA President, had a difficult time choosing the winner. Because it was so hard he decided to award two runner-up prizes of the PIPA "Miracle Babe Born Before My Time" t-shirts. The winner is Gabriella Maree Martin. Runners up Gayley Baird and Nicole Viera-Ribeiro. Please contact PIPA through messages or email [email protected]

01.01.2022 Good news for prems born with PDA. New trail shows promising results. Babies born with APDA are given paracetamol from births for 5 days. https://thewest.com.au//paracetamol-promising-for-prematur

01.01.2022 There are many different things that parents save from their prems journey through the neonatal nurseries eg hospital ID, eye protection from phototherapy, blood pressure cuffs, first pacifier, first beanie, footprints, first outfit etc. Having these keepsakes (or treasures) reminds you of a hard but special time. More importantly it reminds you how amazing your prem is for all they overcome. It also helps to remind you and show others (including your grown up prem) just how tiny they were. What keepsakes did you save from your prems journey? How important are they to you now? Please share.

01.01.2022 In honour of Kangaroo Care Day please share your experiences/photos. Although I am sure this will be a difficult task; PIPA will choose one of the photos /stories to win a Zaky's Kangaroo and Joey plush toy. #KangarooCareDay #KangarooCare
