19.01.2022 A reed bed filtered septic system we installed to handle all our waste water, grey and black. A reed bed filter is a passive system that uses plants to clean waste water and feed it back in to the environment without the need for chlorine tablets or regular servicing costs. All waste water from the house; sinks, shower and toilet, flow into a septic tank where they break down. The highly nutrient rich water then flows out into the reed bed where the plants clean the water by ...absorbing the excessive nutrients, the water then flows into absorption trenches to be absorbed back into the environment. Most modern systems requite chlorine tablets to treat the water before it can be returned to the environment, this is quite damaging to soil bacteria, fungi and plants. The reed bed allows for propagation of plants like vetiver/engineering grass. It also allows us to harvest the grass and reeds to be used as mulch or to go into the compost pile, putting the nutrients back into our garden.

15.01.2022 The greenhouse we built on our Springbrook property for propagation and storage. It is well ventilated with doors and flap down windows on each end and 2 roll down on the north face. The shade cloth roll down allows us to ventilate the structure while keeping out the harsh sun in summer or open right up to let max sun in during winter and allow easy access. A clear plastic roll down to lock in the heat over night in winter and keep the torrential downpours we get here from damaging the seedlings. The structure is 5.5m X 6m.

See more

03.01.2022 We have recently been constructing a swale and pond system for the Springbrook Mens Shed. We completed the main layout of swales and pond a few weeks ago and were just starting to get some plants in to hold all the soil together. We have had over 350mm of rain in the past 36 hours and a prediction of 600-700mm more to come. We were not quite ready for that amount of rain but it has given us great opportunity to see how the system can handle the heavy downpours we often get. This system is designed to be able to catch and store every drop when rain is minimal and disperse excessive rain when we get events like this.
