23.01.2022 SAFE DELIVERY FOR BASS COAST BABIES The Carver/Lombard family from Phillip Island has a new addition! Despite baby Malibu arriving in the midst of the Covid pandemic, parents Elly Carver and Bryce Lombard said the service from Bass Coast Health put any anxiety to rest.... BCH said their midwifery team were delighted to welcome baby Malibu, with Elly getting to know the obstetrics and midwifery team, who checked in on Elly and Malibus health in the lead up to the birth. When Malibu was ready to appear, it happened quickly. When we arrived at Wonthaggi Hospital it was go time. The midwifery team were calm and knew what to do for my rapid birth, said Elly. Having the staff so well prepared and covering all the Covid requirements, Elly said she was just able to breathe and focus on the birth. I felt comfortable and nurtured. Partner Bryce said the new Covid processes at the hospital, designed to keep all the mothers and babies safe, put him at ease. The midwifery ward offers mums and partners their own birthing suites equipped with all of the essentials including private bathroom, wardrobe, a fridge, and personal touches added by the midwifes. BCH said directly employing the midwifery team and obstetricians provides continuity of care and connection, because the same staff follow the prenatal, birth and early post-natal journey. The continuity of care has been part of the positive experience for Elly and Bryce, now receiving visits from midwifes in the comfort of their home. For expecting mums or families planning their birth, Elly had this message: Come in with an open mind and trust in the midwifes and obstetricians, they are such a great support. We had the most amazing time and felt really looked after under the wonderful care. To access free and bulked billed services during the ante-natal, birth and post-natal period phone (03) 5671 3201.

13.01.2022 COWES KIDS EMBRACE ONLINE LEARNING With students set to return to the classroom in term four, Cowes Primary is celebrating the achievements of students during the latest round of remote learning. Principal Rod McKenzie said on the whole, students had worked hard and embraced the challenge of learning from home.... One new initiative was celebratory postcards. Mr McKenzie said teachers shared work with him and Assistant Principal Sarah Tyrell, who then sent out postcards to acknowledge the hard work and effort students were making. People can feel a little isolated at these times and receiving something personal in the mail certainly helps to boost spirits, he said. Even with remote learning, some regular initiatives remained in place, including Crazy Hair Day. Mr McKenzie said the crazy hairdos resulted in plenty of smiles during the virtual classroom catch-ups, with students creativity on full display. Specialist lesson have also continued online, including a range of different activities in STEM, Music, PE, Japanese and art. Students tackled Lego challenges, created their own carpool karaoke videos, set up marble runs, painted rocks, created Japanese anime drawings, practiced juggling, and set themselves daily workout challenges. There were also live lessons, which mirrored the normal classroom, giving students the chance to interact with their classmates and their teacher. To help keep spirits high and students engaged, Mr McKenzie said staff had developed a range of different ways to help keep the children motivated and interested. This includes live yoga and Lego lessons, and regular catchups through Google Meet, with Wednesdays becoming a designated activity day. More local news at www.pisra.com.au

12.01.2022 CONCERNED CITIZEN TAKES UP THE CAUSE A 36-year-old Bass Coast resident has created a report detailing the shires flora and fauna extinctions, calling for increased environmental protections in the lead up to the October council elections. Laura Burns, from Inverloch (pictured), said she was so concerned about the loss of species she compiled Our Extinction Crisis Bass Coast.... The report states more than 90 per cent of native vegetation has been cleared from Bass Coast, leading to problems of ecosystem decline, threatened species and risk of extinctions. There are four threatened ecological communities in our region, including endangered giant kelp marine forests. Lauras report says Bass Coast Shire is home to 58 nationally listed threatened species including, the growling grass frog, and giant Gippsland earthworm. However there are some unusual inclusions in that list, including albatross and blue whale. I researched Federal Government data to compile the report and the fact it includes some species not seen here, yet doesnt include others that local residents know to be at risk, highlights that more research is needed and data is flawed. If we dont properly understand what is threatened, how can we protect it? I call on council to use the expertise of local environment groups to improve local data and knowledge. Lauren, who has an engineering degree, called for election candidates to support planning policies that support the co-existence of people and wildlife. I wrote Our Extinction Crisis to place a global problem in the local context of our Bass Coast region. More local news at www.pisra.com.au

12.01.2022 CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK Kindness and acceptance are at the heart of education at Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School. Since opening four years ago with just 18 students, enrolments have steadily grown to 89.... However while the school may have expanded, the culture of the school remains unchanged. We have kept that family feel, Principal Cathy Blackford said. We value each of our students and are accepting of all faiths and abilities. Cathy said parents and children thrive in the welcoming environment created by the staff, which has a focus on the importance of respect. When the school’s stage two development is completed by mid-year, it will have the capacity for up to 180 students. But it’s not just the beautifully designed new buildings that provide a fantastic educational experience for the students. Educational outdoor areas include a biodiversity area, vegetable gardens, a large sandpit, ovals and playing courts. Alongside the environmental focus, the school provides the standard Victorian curriculum, as well as science, art, music, drama and digi-tech. The school’s designated second language is French and it takes a novel, school-wide approach to the subject. Instead of just doing one class a week, we learn French together all the students and staff for 15 minutes every day, Cathy explained. There is also the capacity for students to work outside their standard grade where required. Most importantly, the school provides an accepting and tolerant environment, allowing children to thrive and grow. I’ve had parents say to me, our children don’t have to change to come to you you change for our children, Cathy said. Our school delivers the values of the Gospel compassion, understanding and to love one another. Our Lady Star of the Sea is located at 6 Cowes-Rhyll Road, Cowes. Please ring the office and speak to Alison on 5951 1700 if you would like a tour.

07.01.2022 A DYNASTY OF DIXONS As published in our PIFNC tribute - out now. One name that remains synonymous with the Phillip Island Football Club is that of the Dixon family.... This association was forged well before the present club was formed when the Dixon brothers from Ventnor Rex, Bob, Bill and young Snowy (Frank) took to the field in what was then a four team island competition. They were keen sportsmen, noted for their strength and skill on the football field. Rex, in particular, was a champion player, and the idol of his five sons, Don, twins Laurie and John, and Winston and Howard. All five boys played football for Phillip Island for various periods of time and Don, Laurie and John, who remained living here, continue an unbroken association with the Club to this day. On one occasion all five boys played in a seniors match together in a semi-final against Dalyston. The Dixon combination helped secure a win for the island that day. The playing days for Don, Laurie and John began in 1954 while they were still in their teens. One of the strongest memories of those early playing days was being coached by Charlie Luke (Geez he was bloody good!) who led by example. As time progressed the Dixon boys established themselves in the following line-up: Winston at fullback, Don at centre half forward, John at centre half back and Laurie at full forward. Such was Lauries sharp shooting that he took out the leagues goal kicking award in 1958. The one thing that cemented the team together in those days was the camaraderie that existed, and loyalty to each other, which holds to this day. Wed always stick together, on the field and at the social functions, said John. Phillip Island is the only team I played for. Id never leave to play against my mates. There were no club rooms and only basic and rustic change rooms for players and umpires in those days. Subscribe online for more local stories at www.pisra.com.au
07.01.2022 HOLLY GOES FOR GOLD Even the current COVID 19 challenges couldnt stop Newhaven College Year 12 student Holley Buckley going for gold. 06.01.2022 KEEPING THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE Perspective and positivity were the focus this term at Newhaven College, with the school returning to learning from home. College Principal, Gea Lovell said it was a difficult time for the school community, the focus was on remaining positive and being grateful for the good things.... She praised the work of college staff who worked hard to support students and their parents throughout the term. Like with many parents, staff with children are juggling their work commitments with their parental duties. All of us are affected in one way or another as we blend our homes with our workplaces and tackle this challenging way of teaching and learning. The care and hard work of all our staff during this time has been nothing short of remarkable, and I applaud them for all their effort. They are exhausted, but their passion and willingness to go above and beyond in supporting our students has been simply brilliant. With the return to remote learning college ICT staff proficiently set up laptops for families that needed them, and offered staff and students support with any technical issues. Ms Lovell said teaching staff adapted the curriculum and co-curricular programs into a remote learning version ensuring a balanced approach that meets the academic requirements and wellbeing for our students. The planned 2021 information evenings were delivered in an online format including a Zoom presentation and video messages from each Head of Faculty and Department. Parents/guardians also participated in online teacher interviews. Ms Lovell said students were also supported through the colleges pastoral care program, which provided opportunities for students to engage in things they enjoy. No doubt, this year will be featured in the history books one day, Newhavens story will be remembered for its sense of resilience, care and community, Ms Lovell said. 04.01.2022 A PIECE OF COWES HISTORY The vacant Isle of Wight sold in 2016 to Mr John Matthies, after being on the market since 2014, when the former owner of the Continental and the Isle of Wight went into liquidation. Around 2015 a protracted year-long sale fell through after a would-be buyer failed to come up with the funds.... In 2016 an agent said the asking price was north of $6 million. The Isle of Wight was first given a planning permit for redevelopment by the former Phillip Island Shire and since 2005 has had a planning permit, which had been amended and subsequently approved by a planning panel. The pub was due to be demolished for redevelopment, when fire gutted the building in May 2010. More than 100 fighters responded to the blaze but could not save the hotel. In 2011, the Bass Coast Shire refused to extend the permit for a third time, and it expired. The historic hotel famously played host to Fred Astaire, Ava Gardner and Gregory Peck during their filming of the movie On the Beach in 1959. The same year, the Australian Women’s Weekly reported that tennis champion Frank Sedgman purchased the Isle of Wight Hotel at Cowes, with fellow professional tennis players Ken Rosewall, Lew Hoad, Tony Trabert, Pancho Segura, and Richard Gonzales. Although Sedgman would not disclose the price, he said up to 40,000 would be spent renovating the two-story building, reported the magazine on May 27, 1959. John Matthies has now put the land on the market because it is unfair to the community to leave the iconic property undeveloped. Full story in this week's Advertiser - out now! www.pisra.com.au

02.01.2022 BED TAX A SOLUTION TO RENTAL BAD BEHAVIOUR? A bed tax and a cap on online rental bookings have been proposed by a Bass Coast Shire councillor as a possible remedy to bad behaviour from commercial holiday homes. 01.01.2022 EXTRA CARE FOR CHRISTMAS A dedicated team at PICAL are putting together some very special Christmas packs. Every year, a unique charity called Pinchapoo distributes packs with personal hygiene products to thousands of disadvantaged men, women and children across the country.... Here on Phillip Island, these packs are distributed by the local St Vinnies group and through PICAL. The Pinchapoo packs are the brainchild of founder Kate Austin. The cheeky hotel toiletry pinching movement started 11 years ago to help disadvantaged people across the country, distributing packs made up of the tiny bottles of shampoo, body wash and moisturiser taken from hotel rooms. Since then it’s expanded to include rescued and repurposed items direct from manufacturers and suppliers. This year, with Australians unable to travel, and therefore unable to donate those pinched toiletries, donations from suppliers are more important than ever. Sukin is one of the supplies who generously donate supplies of personal items for this worthy cause. With volunteers stretched to the limit, getting the packs together has been a challenge. Courtney Wallace from Women Connect stepped up and organised with Sukin for boxes of products to picked up and brought back to the island. A group of PICAL volunteers then got to work packing the gift bags last week. Once packed, 150 bags will be distributed by PICAL to clients, staff and volunteers. A further 175 packs will be distributed by St Vinnies to clients on Phillip Island and across Bass Coast. www.pinchapoo.org.au To subscribe to the advertiser online, go to www.pisra.com.au
