18.01.2022 PAUSE... and celebrate how far you’ve come... "This is to remind you to pause and celebrate all that you've achieved this year," said one of my beautiful friends as they handed me a Pivot Osteopathy Christmas decoration. "You spend too much time thinking about what you still have left to do, and not enough time acknowledging how far you've come." ... I thought it was such a pertinent reminder in amongst the chaos of Christmas, that I wanted to share it. I hope that you too take time to pause and celebrate all your wins, both big and small. If you're like me, there are far more than we give ourselves credit for. 18.01.2022 Are we still open? Yes, for the time being. I am monitoring the situation daily and have implemented a number of strategies to minimise risk including: - I have reduced patient numbers so that we have time to clean everything between patients.... - I am altering treatment so we will no longer be doing face down treatments on the table. This will avoid faces on the table. - We have a strict linen policy and washing is now being done on an extra hot cycle. - Hand-washing is more important than ever! My singing hasnt improved, but Ive had lots of practice! - The cancellation policy has been changed. If youre feeling unwell, have a cough or fever please cancel your appointment. We all need to work together to protect each other. - We have additional cleaning practices to wipe down surfaces throughout the clinic multiple times throughout the day. - Theres a lot of misinformation circling out there. 16.01.2022 We had so much fun hosting the Womens Health Symposium this weekend. It was a sold-out event, with over seventy attendees and I have to say that our speakers and attendees were fantastic. You never know how an event will turn out, but we had so much fun, weve already started jotting down ideas for next year :D.
15.01.2022 Pain and discomfort in pregnancy may be common, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it should be considered normal. Various factors such as the change in centre of gravity, hormonal influences on ligaments, and the sheer weight of the growing baby and uterus can lead to poor compensatory patterns in the mother’s body, leading to pain which can at times be quite significant and limiting. Mamas, you don’t have to suffer through this! ... At Pivot Osteopathy we pride ourselves in supporting you as you face so many physical changes, helping your body adapt to it’s ever-changing physiology, and to help prepare you as best as possible to bring your baby into the world. 15.01.2022 I never feel like going to gym after a long day at work.but Ive set myself a goal to do at least one unassisted pull-up by December 31st this year. To do this, I have to be consistent with my training. But how do I work around motivational lows? Health triggers! Triggers are simple, small actions that trigger a chain of events....like taking an extra moment to place my climbing shoes on the front seat when I get out of my car in the morning. ... When I get in my car at the end of the day, all ready to head home and chill, I see my shoes.and I swing by the gym instead. Im finally making progress! New habits are hard to form if we rely only on motivation. What habits are you working on and how can you use triggers? #smallchanges #healthpivots #urbanclimb #osteopathy #pivotosteo #paddington #healthmoments #osteo #womenshealth
13.01.2022 Physical distancing is tough! But Im seeing this as a unique opportunity for greater connection. Ive asked my family and friends to start a new game with me. Every couple of days I post a video question to them to learn something new. Why is social distancing an opportunity for greater connection? Because we can spend our whole lives living close to someone, but barely know them. We may not be physically close to people right now, but we can use this time to grow emotionall...y closer by seeking a deeper connection with people. My first question is "What do you think is the absolute coolest hobby out there. And why?"the why is important and the answers are enlightening, entertaining and, Im hoping, transformative in this crazy time. Remember: Be Safe. Clean Hands. Be Kind <3
12.01.2022 There is so much more to menopause than hot flushes! This is not just a time in womens lives when they can experience difficult symptoms. Estrogens play a role in almost all cells and tissues in the body, so the reduction in estrogen levels around menopause has important implications for womens health. While the combined impact of ageing and menopause is considerable, the more we understand about this phase the more we can empower women in making lifestyle changes that... will support their health through the menopausal transition and the rest of their lives. If youre a health professional who has questions about menopause or how we can assist and support women as they go through menopause, join us at the Womens Health Symposium | Brisbane | 6th July. See https://buff.ly/2WK8XDG for details. Dr Rhonda Anderson, Ph.D., will be speaking about the impacts of the menopausal transition, and how we can better prepare and support women through those stages as part of a constructive approach to healthy ageing. Rhonda is an exercise physiologist who specialises in healthy ageing for women through her business Fit and Well.
12.01.2022 And Breathe. Modern life is busy! Some days it feels like Ive been running from the moment I opened my eyes. Most of us would benefit from developing a meditation practice, but seriously, when do we fit that in? Why not start small? With five deep, slow breathes. Slow breaths will calm your nervous system and increase your clarity. If youve already got a meditation practice, good for you! Remember to keep breathing throughout the day too.... Its all about the little moments that lead to better overall health. Because lots of little moments lead to big changes over time. Do yourself a favour today. Take thirty seconds, just for you. Stop. .And Breathe
12.01.2022 After sitting, feeding, carrying, standing, slouching, or remaining stationary at a desk all day, your rib cage and the middle part of your thoracic spine can feel a bit stiff. Esme, one of our favourite exercise physiologists from Pear Exercise Physiology: Pregnancy & Womens Health, recently came into Pivot to help get her spine moving better. She shared this stretch with us to help maintain that movement through her spine. Manual therapists and Exercise Physiologists work... so well together for this very reason - hands on work to get some movement - active work to keep that change! Thanks for sharing Esme #exerciseismedicine
11.01.2022 Active labour at its best!! Pregnancy is not a disease state, so if you feel you can move through your labour, have your health providers help you embrace the power of your body and dance your baby into the world!
11.01.2022 Thank you to all the doctors and nurses and support staff out there looking after us. I thought this mural was so apt I had to share. Hope youre all safe and well.
11.01.2022 Many people hold their breath when they text, email, or spend time in front of a screen. Why is this a problem? It can affect your neck and shoulders causing tension, pain and sometimes headaches if you do it all the time. When we hold our breath while concentrating on other things, we’re often taking short, shallow breaths, which can lead to mild hyper-ventilation over time. ... Mild hyper-ventilation creates an imbalance in the amount of carbon dioxide and oxygen in your blood. This can affect your whole body as it can change the pH of your blood, which may lead to muscle tension, feelings of agitation and in some cases anxiety. If we are chronically hyper-ventilating, we are more likely to experience ‘panic attacks’ triggered by our body thinking it cannot get in enough air. Aren’t our bodies incredibly finely balanced systems!! The best way to breathe is slowly, through our nose, down into our lower ribs. The breaths down don’t need to be large, but we do want them to reach into our lower ribs. Next time you’re on your phone, check in with yourself and notice how you’re breathing. Your neck, shoulders and anxiety levels will thank you for it! If you need more help with breathing, both Sarah and Liz have done additional training in helping people improve their breathing, so make a booking today, or bring it up in your next appointment #brisbaneosteo #paddingtonbrisbane #healthpivots #pivotosteo #osteopath #osteopathy #osteopathicmedicine #lifestylemedicine #breath #breathwork #breatheinbreatheout #mindfulness #mindfulnesspractice #meditation #relax #hyperventilation #anxiety

09.01.2022 One of my lovely patients gifted me a set of beautifully crafted inspirational quotes from Inthedaylight. This one got me thinking as Ive seen so many people in the past few days whove had these stumbles in the road and it can be hard to see a way forward when youre in pain (whether its physical or mental). So heres a little reminder for those who are struggling. Your body is stronger and more resilient than you know. The more I learn about our bodies and our minds..., the more I marvel at how strong we are. If youre at a stumble in your road, whether its physical or mental, know that its NOT the end of your journey. It might be hard at times. It might be a time of change. But its all part of your unique story. A stumble is not the end of your journey.... sometimes its the start of something new .
09.01.2022 Here at Pivot we believe Lifestyle IS Medicine. This yeah Sarah has become a fellow of the Australian Society of Lifestyle Medicine (ASLM) because she deeply believes in what this organisation stands for. ALSM promotes collaboration between allied health workers, medical doctors and researchers to bring their patients (you guys) the most up-to-date ways to live your best life. Health shouldn’t be an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff when you’re really unwell. Instead it s...hould be continuous education on how your body works and how to improve your habits and choices to allow you to be the best version of you. Health and research are changing faster than ever before. ASLM is committed to educating practitioners on the latest research so that they can ensure that the people we work with are given the most evidence-informed options available for their conditions. Sarah feels so passionate about this, particularly in the area of women’s health and chronic disease. It really is the small changes that lead to the big gains over time. She thinks that each person she works with deserves the space to talk about their options. It’s a growing movement around the world and Sarah can’t wait to see where it goes over the next few years. #brisbane #brisbaneosteopath #pivotosteo #pivotosteopathy #healthpivots #paddingtonbrisbane #lifestylemedicine #holistichealth #holistichealing #holisticwellness #holisticwellness #healthandwellness #healthandwellbeing #manualtherapy #manualtherapist #osteopathy #osteopath #backpain #pelvicpain #pelvicpain #pregnancy #healthymummy #healthymum #healthylifestyle

01.01.2022 I completed my first adventure race this weekend! Something I thought was out of reach after I tore a ligament in my right ankle in 2018 . I couldnt even walk up-hill for the first few weeks. And it was months before I could dance or run again. . . But fast-forward two years and I have to marvel at our bodys capacity to repair, adapt and improve. The race involved navigating a 48km course of trail running, mountain biking and kayaking. My final run was mor...e like a shuffle and my hip flexors were cramping, but I did it! We came third in our category and 14th overall (kudos to @off_trail_adventures for superior navigational skills). . . My ankle still isnt perfect. I had to give it some extra nurturing pre and post-race, and I needed to do some work on my right knee and hip to ensure they didnt take on any extra burden during the race. It was worth it though! . . I wanted to share because sometimes when were injured, we feel like well never get through it and our body will never be the same. The truth is, your body probably wont be the same, but you dont need to stop dreaming. . . Your bodys ability to adapt is remarkable. It takes patience. It takes time. But if you understand your bodys story, you can figure out ways to adapt and nurture your niggles so that you can move how you want to move and live how you want to live. . . If youre injured, have patience and keep dreaming. Your body has got this . See more
