25.01.2022 Here's one for VET trainers: If your learners can't understand assessment instructions and need to seek clarification, there's a chance they are not written clearly. The Principles of Assessment require your Assessment tools and instruments to be valid, reliable, flexible and fair. Confusing assessment instructions jeopardise these principles.... Dont frustrate your learners. Why not let me help? I can deliver a PD plain English workshop tailored specifically to your VET sector. #assessment #vet # training Drop me a line to find out more: [email protected]

23.01.2022 This is what Plain English does for your message -- it helps it shine through by removing the clutter and waffle. I can help you with this (and the gilding too, if you like).

23.01.2022 Are you a VET trainer? Read how Plain English can be your best friend: https://www.readingwritinghotline.edu.au/the-beauty-of-pla/

23.01.2022 What's the difference between "affect" and "effect"? Here's one way to remember: Affect is an action (so 'a' for action). For example. "The pilot strike didn't affect me."... Effect is a noun (or a thing). For example: "The movie had lots of special effects". Do you have a confusing word pair?

22.01.2022 Can you afford NOT to communicate clearly? The Royal Mail saved 500,000 by redesigning one form into plain English! Need help? Give us a call.

16.01.2022 A lovely article highlighting the egalitarian nature of plain language. https://niemanstoryboard.org//keeping-it-simple-on-plain-/

16.01.2022 Do you have a favourite word? One of my favourites is: evanescent ( bubbles are evanescent). Why not share your favourite (or not-so-favourite) words below. I'd love to hear from you I am a self-confessed word nerd. Yep. I love the richness of our language! How does that fit with plain English you might wonder? Well, language is like a toolbox. You choose the right tool for your task. If you are writing a safety procedure, Shakespeare won't do the job. Sorry, Will. Bu...t if you want to create an evocative mood, loaded with nuance and subtlety, then head for that dictionary and bring out the 'good china'. Long live our wonderful language, with all its quirks and idiosyncrasies. Photo by Lanju Fotografie on Unsplash

14.01.2022 Clear writing can literally save lives. If your safety procedures are full of jargon and pompous terminology (and let's face it, most are), a serious incident is only a matter of time. How healthy are your safety docs? Need help to clean out the clutter? Why not drop me a line.

07.01.2022 This photo shows what wordiness, jargon, 'officialese', 'legalese' and general waffle does to your message. It HIDES it. And readers will give up. Now watch the video in the next post.

06.01.2022 Spelling matters... Great sales pitch though.

05.01.2022 When you write, make sure you understand your key message. Then remove unnecessary complexity (wordiness). The result: elegant, effective communication. ... Sound easy? Not necessarily. [email protected] Because it pays to make sense.

04.01.2022 Is plain English just 'dumbing down'? Find the answer here in my "Word Nerd" podcast: https://player.whooshkaa.com/the-learning-capacity-podcast Big thanks to Peter Barnes from Learnfast Group.
