23.01.2022 It is important to get puppies and kittens comfortable with being washed from an early age. We recommend starting gradually, by making their initial baths quick... and enjoyable, and rewarding them with lots of praise and treats. Weve been using the new Puppy and Kitten Shampoo from Houndztooth on Easy and we simply love the results! This 100% Australian made, low-irritant goat milk shampoo is carefully formulated to nourish and clean your puppy or kittens coat, whilst being gentle on their young skin. We love it, Easy loves it, and we think youll love it too! We might be biased but could she be any cuter?

21.01.2022 THE INVISIBLE SLIMY MONSTER IN THE WATER BOWL Ever rub your fingers on the inside of your pets water bowl and you feel a slippery slime of sorts? Well that inv...isible goo is called Biofilm. Biofilm is a collection of organic and inorganic, living and dead materials collected on a surface. It is made up of many different types of bacteria bound together in a thick substance that acts as a glue to both hold the bacteria together and adhere it to a surface. Biofilm can often be good bacteria but there is also the bad! Biofilms provide a safe haven for organisms like Listeria, E. coli and legionella where they can reproduce to levels where contamination of products passing through that water becomes inevitable. Bad Biofilms have been found to be involved in a wide variety of microbial infections in the body such as urinary tract infections, middle-ear infections and bladder infections. Many pet parents are guilty of simply refilling the water bowl over and over without a wash and this becomes a wonderful environment for biofilm to soak around in. How to reduce Biofilm: Remember to clean your pets water bowl at least once a week if you can and change water daily. For pet daycares where a host of different bacteria float around in water bowls, wash daily! For best results, run your water bowls through a hot cycle in the dishwasher with an eco friendly, non-toxic soap to really clean out the biofilm! Rodney Habib Pet Health Site "An educated, informed and well-researched community of pet owners can only put more pressure on the pet food industry to be better! When pet owners know better, they will only do better!" (P.S. - I am going to get lambasted over the "wash once a week at least" concept. However, after a wonderful discussion with a well known pro-active veterinarian/scientist, when she studied the bacteria looming in pets water bowls she found if you have a healthy beast, biofilm can actually be full of wonderful, healthy bacteria. Its like playing in the mud as kids and having good bacteria all over you! So sometimes cleaning regularly can wash all the good stuff away. ;) )

20.01.2022 HELP US FIND A HOME FOR RUSTY This magnificent senior Kelpie is one of AWL NSWs Legacy pets - a program for pets to come into our care after their loving ow...ners pass away. 12-year-old Rusty is looking for a permanent foster home. Despite his age, he still loves going for walks and going to the beach. He does however have arthritis so he will need a new home where his carer will be able to manage this - a warm place to sleep inside and minimal stairs is best. Like most of us, Rusty can be a bit old and cranky so would do best in a home where he doesnt have an annoying young whippersnapper in his face. Rusty was very much loved in his old home, so we are seeking a permanent foster home where Rusty will continue to be spoilt for the rest of his days. A place where someone is home often would be pawfect! If you would like more information on Rusty please email [email protected] or if you would like to apply for Rusty, please complete the application form here: https://bit.ly/34bash0

18.01.2022 BREAKING: Authorities have raided two NSW puppy farms this morning following allegations of extreme animal cruelty leading to the death of a 10 month old female... Boxer. It is reported that the mother dog was unable to give birth to all her puppies and while in considerable pain, the puppy farm operator denied multiple requests to take her to the vet. She is understood to have died in agony over a period of 4 days while the surviving puppies were shipped to a pet shop. Breeder dogs are treated simply as machines by puppy farmers. Across NSW there will be many others just like her: facing a lifetime of confinement, deprived of all socialisation and forced to pump out litter after litter in squalid conditions to supply the pet trade industry. I am drafting legislation that will ensure our laws are as effective at protecting dogs here as they are in other states. Its time puppies received the protection they deserve. 17.01.2022 WHY DOES MY NON-AGGRESSIVE DOG WEAR A MUZZLE? Because it helps enforce social distancing Because I’d prefer not to speak to people on walks Because I like... watching people cross the road Little Man believes walks are an open buffet, he strives to be the fastest dog in the west to find and consume anything that resembles food including cat poo, bread left out for birds and on really special occasions human poo A muzzle let’s me relax and not be constantly on guard and reduce his sniffing time. It keeps him safer from eating dangerous and toxic items. Why does he behave like this? Is he missing something in his diet? Is he starving? Well, he’s part Labrador so he’d totally tell you he was starving Little can look at food on put on weight! He eats poo simply because he likes the taste, he’s eating unprocessed food from the poos usually of dogs who are fed highly processed diets...he’s getting Maccas! It is also part behavioural, it turned it into a bit of a competition with me...who has the fastest reflexes...not me! He typically doesn’t do it at home. People are wary of using muzzles because they don’t want people to think their dog is an out of control killer - get over it, what other people think is none of your business. Muzzles have so many awesome uses and in reactive dogs they provide a safe environment for all concerned and helps every one relax...why wouldn’t you bang one on your dog if those are the benefits? Little Man has been trained to accept the muzzle so he doesn’t find it offensive to wear it - you can find muzzle training videos on YouTube. MUZZLES CAN ALLOW DOGS TO HAVE MORE FREEDOM ... WINNING

16.01.2022 A recent peer-reviewed paper found owners reported flea & tick products containing the potent pesticide, Isoxazoline, cause a reaction in 2 OUT OF 3 DOGS! R...eactions include seizures, behavioural issues, muscular/balance issues, and even death. The pesticide can be found in products like: NEXGARD, NEXGARD SPECTRA, BRAVECTO, SIMPARICA, CREDELIO, REVOLUTION PLUS, and others. This pesticide is so powerfully potent that it starts killing within two hours after administration! In fact, it kills 98.7% of newly arriving fleas within 24 hours! Because of this, Isoxazoline drugs now carry a warning on their labels in both the U.S. and Canada. Even the FDA-U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning statement for veterinarians and pet parents. 15.01.2022 If youve been taught to reach out your hand for a new dog to sniff, PLEASE STOP! The sniff test reaching your hand out for a new dog to smell -- is, unfo...rtunately, a badly ingrained habit that society has been taught as a way to introduce yourself. Because when you reach out towards a dog, you are using your body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe and whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. Youre forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasnt had time to develop. And to some dogs, this is quite rude and the reason many snap at or bite people. This can also cause a lot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions. If they are on lead, they have nowhere to go if they are sensitive to spatial pressure, so they can end up shutting down, shying away, or snapping at your hand to make you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they arent so stressed. People think by offering your hand, it can give the dog time to sniff to know youre friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand. Their noses are far more superior than ours, so they dont need close contact forced upon them to smell you. Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and thats perfectly fine. They arent your dog, so you dont need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction. Sowhats the right way to meet a dog? Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not everyone wants strangers to touch their dogs. Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side. Ignore the dog & talk to the owner. Dont stare at the dog or try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you and sniff around. They will usually move away and then come back for a second sniff. Some dogs will bunt your hands and wag their tails, which are good signs that youre likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) and then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats. And its a more stress-free option for dogs and a better way to develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions. All too often, dogs are surrendered to the shelter after biting someone who unintentionally forced an interaction that made the dog uncomfortable. Please share this important information to prevent well-meaning humans from getting hurt and pups from losing their homes! *Thank you to Eureka Dog Services for sharing this great information!
15.01.2022 GRR has been advised of a petition calling for the End of Blanket Pet Bans in New South Wales Strata Schemes. GRR does not usually advise our friends and suppor...ters of Petitions but in this scenario GRR sees many dogs coming into our care because of Strata Schemes. These Goldies are much loved family members who find themselves homeless when their owners need to source properties that have Strata Schemes where their dogs are not permitted. GRR believes that much loved Goldies should be with their families so please take the time to read the petition. https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au//Pages/ePetition-details See more

11.01.2022 UPDATE [APPLICATIONS CLOSED] Hello! Im ready fur my furever home My name is Reginald, a 3.5 year old Cavalier, but my friends call me Reggie. Ive been in ...care with GAR for the past few weeks as a private surrender, unfortunately Ive missed my little pack a lot but Ive slotted into foster life with my foster brothers well and love my routine of walks, dinner time and lots of pats, now Im really looking forward to finding the right home for me. Im a very timid boy who can get scared easily, so its important for me to know where safe spaces are in the house just for me, like my bed or a blanket. I am quite cautious with new people and run away if I feel like someone is coming towards me, so a house that is full of noise and young children isnt suitable for me, Id prefer a quieter house with adults or older children and a friendly dog as a best friend, preferably someone who is home often so I can keep you company by being at your side. I love to be around you and wag my tail while you do jobs around the house or work at your desk, Im just happy to be where you are. I am an indoor dog and very used to giving you lots of cuddles on the couch and even trying to sneak into your bed to wish you goodnight, though Im learning that this space isnt for me. I am toilet trained but will need some time to settle into a new space and know where to go to the toilet and sometimes need reminding that I need to go outside so if you give me a routine Im very happy to do as Im told. I have a bit of a sensitive gut which has led me to making mistakes in the shelf, but with eating foods that dont upset my tummy I havent made a mistake in the house since, my foster parents can tell you what is okay for me to eat. I can be very sneaky at climbing on tables and chairs when no one is looking, sometimes just to look out the window to see when youre coming home, but I respond very well to being told no and am learning that its not okay for me to do this. Ive grown up with and have always been in houses where there are other dogs present, Im a lot more confident with a friend to show me that the big wide world isnt such a scary place, so a friendly fellow doggo is perfect for me to be best friends with. Im currently living with a cat and Im really not too phased by cats at all, Id rather hang out with my dog friend anyway. I need some training of how to walk on a lead, I just get so excited to see and smell so many things that I can get distracted by the world, but I promise to always stick by you. I love to meet lots of dogs at the park and am very good with recall so if I run away to say hello, it will only take a quick call of Reggie for me to come running to your side with a big smile on my face. My exposure to new noises and fast things is fairly new, like skateboards and trains, but with some continual exposure and letting me know that everything is normal and okay, I can trot a lot with you without a care in the world. I may take a little while to warm to you, get used to my surroundings and also go for walks without being scared, but if youre patient with me and give me lots of pats and words of encouragement, Im sure I will be the best companion youve ever met. Im ready to meet my forever family! Reginald is desexed, microchipped, up to date with vaccinations, flea and worm treatments. 10.01.2022 Important notice to all pet owners The Australian Veterinary Association has issued a warning to vet clinics and pet owners alike advising that they are documenting at least one case a week of Fanconi-like syndrome, associated with the feeding of commercial dried treats originating from Asia. The toxin causing this disease has yet to be identified. Fanconi-like disease affects the kidneys. ... Dogs may exhibit clinical signs including increased thirst, increased urination, vomiting and loss of appetite. In addition, they may show an elevation in some of their liver enzymes and lower than normal phosphate levels. However, the hallmark of this syndrome is glucose in their urine, but no elevated glucose levels in their blood. Whilst many cases recover simply by withdrawing the treats, some cases have been associated with severe kidney failure and death. If you are at all concerned about your pets, please contact the clinic We can run a urine test to screen for the syndrome and perform further diagnostics if needed. We strongly urge you all to please check the country of origin of any treats that you feed your pets. Please use treats made in Australia from 100% Australian produce or homemade ones. If you cannot identify the country of origin, we advise erring on the side of caution and discarding those treats.

06.01.2022 JD HAS A MEET AND GREET NEXT WEEK!! My name is JD!! Do you remember me from last month? I was left in the pound at 12 years of age - abandoned by the family ...I thought loved me but Rescue Hub stepped in to save me. They found me a loving foster home with a beautiful mum who has being caring for me since I left the pound but I can only stay here until Christmas time so I am on the lookout for a new home. I am an older gentleman (I'll be 13 next February) who is looking for a quiet and loving home to live out my days. I only need a short walk each day and I am happy to lay by your feet, and keep you company. I would prefer a home where there is somebody home for some of the day. I have had some lumps and bumps removed but the vet has given me the "all clear" so now I just need to find my forever home to live out my twilight years. A long term foster home is ok too and Rescue Hub will look after me financially if you can give me the love and care I need. Overall for my age, I am in good health and all my vital organs are in good working order! I am partly deaf but will follow commands. I will need to be the only pet, and can walk past other dogs fairly well, but I definitely will need a new home with no other pets. Is there anyone out there that can offer a 12 year old gentleman like me my furever home? ** PLEASE SHARE for me so my new family can find me! ** Luv JD PS there are a few more photo's of me posted in the comments section. 05.01.2022 Available to adopt: Biscuit Biscuit is a sweet and gentle girl, and she is currently being treated for skin issues and requires twice-weekly baths until her ski...n is back to its glowing shine. She has had a rough go, and we are on the lookout for the second chance at a happy, wonderful life this girl deserves. Biscuit may suit a home with kids over the age of 14 and she is looking for a home without other pets. She is in need of love and attention to get her back to her sparkling self. Her skin might look at bit rough currently, but with some TLC, she will be the best doggo in a loving home. Biscuit has tried to make friends here at the shelter, but she is really not keen on her canine, feline, or pocket pet companions. She would adore a great family that understands the requirements needed to care for this beautiful, sweet-hearted dog. Biscuit can get a bit overwhelmed with a lot of commotion, so we ask that you have a quiet household and someone home fairly often for Biscuit. If you would like more information on Biscuit, please contact the AWL NSW Kemps Creek shelter on 8777 4445 or email [email protected]. R251000222.

04.01.2022 WARNING!!! DO NOT GIVE THESE SO-CALLED "TREATS" TO YOUR DOGS!!! THEY CAN POTENTIALLY KILL THEM!! Just a little warning regarding the Xmas treats many stor...es are now starting to stock for dogs at Xmas. Many of these so called treats end up with the dog "enjoying" some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas. The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China. The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell. Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes. On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde. If that wasn't bad enough, they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog. Leave them in the shop where they belong or if some well meaning person buys them for your dog put them safely away for later, then dispatch in the bin! Please be safe with your dogs! 01.01.2022 This is a very important message for dog owners to remember and share: ALWAYS ask permission before 1. approaching a dog you don't know OR 2. allowing your dog ...to approach a dog you don't know. We hear stories from pet owners all the time - They're walking their nervous dog down the street with their dog on lead, and somebody else's dog bounds up out of nowhere and intimidates him or her. This can be terrifying and damaging to the nervous dog - sometimes even ending in a fight! Just because YOUR dog is friendly and confident, does not mean every other dog in the street is receptive to a greeting or play. Please be mindful of this when walking your dog - and remember it is the law to keep your dog on the lead unless in a specified no-lead dog park! Lets keep our dog walking manners in tip top shape :) <3 See more
