25.01.2022 The clients are a construction company branching out into residential projects and they wanted a home to provide a point of difference in the new Moncrieff display village. A basic floor plan was commenced by a Sydney Building Designer but I was then tasked to amend the design to fit the site and ACT planning regulations and also to create a 'modernist' aesthetic to differentiate the home from the other 11 homes in the display village. The home required 3 beds, 2.5 bathrooms ...and multiple indoor and outdoor living spaces on a small, sloping block with a rear easement. Construction timeframes were very tight as there was a fixed deadline for the opening of the village which meant that documentation had to be completed to a high standard quickly and comprehensively to ensure that there were minimal delays in building approval and during construction. 23.01.2022 1.4 Ha greenfields site in a rural sub-division close to Murrumbateman village. The clients were a couple looking to create their dream home for their young family and maximise the benefits of their rural setting within commuting distance to Canberra. The site slopes up from the road with north located towards the rear of the block. There were no trees but there were a number of significant rock mounds to work around. The brief asked for a home that was solar passive, minimis...ed water use and was able to deal with both stormwater and wastewater on site. It was to be cost effective and use standard construction methods and materials to ensure that the developers covenants were complied with and that budget and construction timeframes were met. It was to allow separation of public and private areas and provide areas to enjoy outdoor living regardless of the season or weather. The design maximises access to North and creates clearly defined public and private areas via ‘wings’. The plan also spreads low across the site in line with the contours in order to minimise site cut to ensure that extensive excavation could be avoided. Low pitched skillion roofs were used to help blend the home into the landscape and preserve the horizon of the hill behind. Rendered brick and featured Colorbond walls comply with covenants and help break up the bulk of the home. Articulation of the perimeter and the inclusion of numerous outdoor spaces provides opportunities for outside living in response to the prevailing winds and season. A central link provides a clearly defined entry and features a ‘framed’ view of the hill and granite boulders behind. To the right of the entry is the private/kids wing and service areas which provides separation from the public/parents wing to the left.

18.01.2022 An existing two storey duplex close to Dickson was in original condition and the owners wanted to open up living spaces to the existing kitchen, create better integration to the rear yard and improve solar gain and thermal efficiency. They also required a new guest bedroom and bathroom that could be accessed from the main living areas. The existing 3 bedrooms upstairs were to be retained however the main bathroom required total renovation. Double car accommodation was require...d as was office space but this needed to be balanced with maintaining utility access to the rear easement and negotiating reduced setbacks with planning authorities. The owners wanted to retain the existing feel of the duplex and contrast the style and material of the extension so that old and new was highlighted and celebrated.

17.01.2022 "To hemp or not to hemp?" It’s a significant question when there hasn’t been a hemp house built in Canberra before, no builders experienced in hemp construction within 200 km of the capital, and a big question mark around the cost. It certainly made a lot of sense. My clients Vicki & Rowan were keen on an environmentally friendly solution for their inner north property. 06.01.2022 Another great article about the benefits of using Hemp in home construction. I'm getting excited to see our hemp home project (Canberra's first) finished by Christmas.

06.01.2022 The project called for the inclusion of a private outdoor area so that the homeowners could enjoy the rear yard and have a choice of covered and uncovered external areas. The existing setup of the home had the main access to the rear yard through the kitchen and laundry. Alternate access was to be provided via the family room in order to improve the linkage between existing indoor and proposed outdoor living spaces. The new external living space was to be spacious, functional..., aesthetically pleasing and utilise energy efficient building products. The budget was set for a maximum of $50,000 and was to include landscaping and soft furnishings this called for careful design consideration of materials to minimise both material and labour costs while ensuring that quality was in keeping with the overall standard of an inner south home. The existing home is an ‘L’ shaped double brick home with a rear yard that is hedged and very private. A large deck area was designed to mimic the ‘L’ shape of the home and provide multiple spaces for dining and relaxing as well as improve access to the rear yard. A new bi-fold door in an existing window opening provided the free-flowing indoor/outdoor integration encouraging cross ventilation and allows purging of hot air in summer. The deck was partially covered with a floating Solarspan roof that provides weather protection and enables the occupants to utilise the deck as an outdoor living room year round. Edeck engineered Jarrah decking was specified as it is a premium quality, environmentally friendly hardwood that reflects the aesthetics of the existing home and creates a warm and inviting space - it has become the 'party' deck for the clients and their family and friends!

05.01.2022 On Wednesday 6th April I was awarded 2016 ACT Building Designer of the Year at the ACT Chapter Awards held at Southern Innovations in Fyshwick. This award was based on the high quality and diverse range of projects I entered into the awards including a new rural home, urban extensions and renovations, an outdoor living space and a display home. 04.01.2022 A retired couple downsized from a farm to this original Woden valley home. They sought to modernise areas like bathroom and kitchen, improve integration to the rear yard and increase winter sun penetration to the key living areas. Their budget was relatively generous but they were keen to be as cost-effective as possible in the overall construction so that they could spend more on quality internal inclusions including hardwood flooring and bathroom fittings. They also wished ...to update the external look of the home and integrate the extension seamlessly into the existing dwelling. The clients were very eager to preserve as much of the garden as possible and also create much stronger integration from the living areas to the rear private open space. A simple extension provides a new living area at the rear of the existing house which takes advantage of the northern and eastern aspect to create a warm living space in winter. A large deck to the east is a welcoming transition to the yard and provides an external dining space with access to the kitchen improved by a servery window that replaced the original kitchen window. The kitchen and bathroom were updated with minimal relocation of walls or fixtures and care was taken to provide circulation spaces that allow the clients to 'age in place'. To ensure that construction timelines could be met the design was developed to comply with the Exempt track for planning approval. The Construction Drawings were accompanied by a comprehensive Inclusion Schedule and were at such a high level that not one question or request for further information was made by the builder or certifier.
