25.01.2022 Homeless Sorrel & Dill... patiently waiting for you, in the library.

24.01.2022 Butternut pumpkin seedlings have been added to the veggie seedlings collection. Have some space to fill?

22.01.2022 *out of stock* Some nice Iresine herbstii cuttings in the library atm. I have a lovely bunch growing in hydro with my other indoor plants & it’s a great contrast to the collection. Indoors or out, partial sun.

21.01.2022 *out of stock* 2 potted & established Lemon Balm plants have been sitting in the library. I forgot to label them, which is probably why no one has adopted them yet, but they are so, so good. The plants aren’t picky about where they grow and will grow in almost any soil, in part shade to full sun, but flourish best in full sun. Excellent for tea infusions, adding to shortbread or simply grown as a sweet smelling ground cover. https://www.growforagecookferment.com/grow-lemon-balm/

21.01.2022 Plant Street Library garden has new gravel paths. All thanks to the awesome Paul for the grunt work.

21.01.2022 One of the easiest annuals to grow, zinnia flowers bring an explosion of tizzy colour wherever they go. Butterflies and bees are attracted to the cheery flowers that bloom in nearly every bright color imaginable, all Summer long. They grow quickly and reliably, making them a great choice for first-time flower growers. Add in their low maintenance requirements and the variety of sizes and shapes, and you can’t lose. Mixed colour seedlings available today. Full sun

18.01.2022 Frida loved Agaves & so should you! Lots of agaves were donated today, sizes range from small to large. Thanks Dianne for the many donations.

18.01.2022 *Sold Out* ‘Big Red’ Kangaroo Paw plants with roots. Only a few - but already tall & eager to flower. Drought hardy once established. The flowers are nectar rich and bird attracting. Plant in very free-draining soil, in FULL sun with plenty of air flow. Does not like moist conditions, so perfect for that patch of garden that’s always dry.

18.01.2022 What kind of plants would you like to see more of? Anything you’d like, that hasn’t been offered? We’re all ears.

13.01.2022 Oh, the treasure to be found when growing un-named cutting donations!! A Plectranthus ? Was it yours? Please identify this sweetie. And thank you

12.01.2022 Longer, warmer days = longer opening hours

12.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who helped make our little Spring Market a success. Love youse all

12.01.2022 Gazanias - an underrated achiever

11.01.2022 *out of stock* A few small Epidendrum orchids in the library today. Sweeet.

10.01.2022 The garden that started it all... Kelly’s first garden.

10.01.2022 The propagation table (ok, 1 of 3 tables) - where the magic happens.

09.01.2022 Pink frangipani cuttings (Small but PINK! ) An iconic tropical tree bearing clusters of pink coloured, scented flowers during the warmer months of November through to April. Unlike some flowering trees which bloom for a few days or weeks, frangipani flower for months. Commonly used as a specimen tree making a fantastic impact on its own or in a tropical garden design. They're also great in large pots in courtyards or on balconies too. Thanks Sandra, for the share & care!

09.01.2022 Australian native Palm Lily (large cuttings). The Broad Leaf Palm Lily (cordyline petiolaris) has vibrant red berries, grows very easily from cuttings and is suitable for pots or garden beds. Start in a bucket of water & transplant when roots are 1cm, or just plant stalk (remove any leaves below soil) & keep soil well watered for the first weeks. These things are survivors!... Excellent for an instant tropical look & great background plant. Grows1-2m (or taller, but loves a prune to promote new growth).

08.01.2022 Let’s hope the rains hold off...

08.01.2022 Sunflower seedlings in the library this morning. Also, fresh chilli plants & mini cucumber seedlings have arrived with the weak sunshine!

07.01.2022 Freckle Face - Hypoestes phyllostachya Cuttings Polka dot/Freckle Face plants are well suited for indoor use anywhere but you can also grow them in temperate to warm gardens. The foliage is an attractive foil for brightly colored perennial flowers and produces an attractive mound. This adorable plant looks great tucked in a planter with other foliage plants, as part of a color display with flowers, or in summer borders for added texture. NB. The cuttings available may have spent flower spikes, remove these when propagating. Keep only 2-5 leaves to help root growth.

06.01.2022 More Queen’s Tear bromeliads were dropped off by the Super Gillian today. Mine happily grow in the trunk of a palm tree -so there’s always space for them! (Note: they have finished flowering season but plants will now multiple for next year)

06.01.2022 New Sansevieria (also known as Snake Plant) in the library. One of the most carefree house plants you can grow. It thrives in just about any light. And we now have more than this photo, lots! Thank you Jennifer, for the great donation

06.01.2022 What’s new in the library today? Gorgeous capsicum & silverbeet seedlings. Fresh & ready from 11am today.

05.01.2022 2 beautiful fennel ‘bulbs’ in the library for sharing. Delightfully home grown by Anjuli

05.01.2022 Lots of star Jasmine cuttings are in the library. Check out this little video to gain propagation tips. https://youtu.be/eyX2utbnft0

03.01.2022 I know, I know... I stopped accepting plastic pot donations, months ago, but I ran out of my last stash & more plants need potting! Only black pots, please (my aesthetic conceit). Sizes 5cm -10cm preferred

03.01.2022 The thoughtful Jessica has kindly donated more Shiso seedlings to the library. Shiso - Perilla Green - Japanese Basil Also known as - aojiso, ooba (Japan) - zisu (Chinese) is widely used in most Asian countries. The leaves are used with Sashimi, in salads, with meat and fish dishes, pickled & used medicinally. The flowers are also edible and widely used in cooking. A very versatile plant that is also a great looking border.... The plants can either be harvested as young leaves (micro herb) or grown on to provide large plants for leaf / flower harvest. Plant in full to partial sun, medium water requirements.

02.01.2022 Plectranthus graveolens (aka. Bush Basil, Native Coleus, Mountain Plectranthus, Sticky Cockspur) was traditionally used as a medicinal and ceremonial herb. This species occurs naturally in Qld & NSW. Although it’s a type of mint, Bush Basil has a strongly ‘basil-like’ aroma, which compliments Mediterranean flavours like tomato and garlic. Scatter fresh leaves on pizza or caprese salad, or toss small amounts into a blender with pine nuts and olive oil for a fragrant, homemade ...pesto. Grow in full sun to partly shaded conditions, in a freely draining soil. A low-growing shrub, it’s suitable for both garden beds and pots, perfect for filling gaps, adorning edges, occupying narrow beds, or decorating balcony gardens and railings.

02.01.2022 Crystal Apple Cucumber seedlings Produces oval fruits, the size of a small apple, with a creamy-pale color and mild, slightly sweet flavour. Tender enough to eat skin and all, with no bitter aftertaste. Best to eat when smaller & younger. Very productive. Grow on a vertical support to make harvesting easier. Fast growing.... Growing Tip Harvest continuously to keep up production. If the fruits yellow on the vine the plant will stop producing altogether. To pick, twist or snip with clippers to make sure you do not damage the vines.

01.01.2022 Sourdough surprise! Fresh baked goods are always an acceptable trade at the Plant Library Thanks Anne, magnificent!

01.01.2022 4 of these potted beauties are waiting to be rehomed. Meanwhile, they’re lovin’ the rain.

01.01.2022 If you are looking for an excellent ground cover or pot plant, try Variegated Lamiastrum. It’s easily grown in most conditions, from part sun to full shade. It prefers moist soil and growth will be more dense under those conditions, but it also tolerates dry sites. The Silver-variegated trailing form can be used in hanging baskets or to make a dense ground cover that out-competes most weeds. It also looks great as an accompanying plant in mixed containers. Offered as a cutting. Easy to propagate, it will root quickly in water & multiply swiftly. We have plenty available.
