25.01.2022 Day 6 - storing food plastic free As well as grocery shopping, a lot of waste can be generated by storing food. Today I want you to have a think about how you store food - be that in the freezer or in your lunch box - and find ways to use a plastic free or reusable option instead.... Here are a few swaps for common plastic items - Freezer bags -> reuse plastic containers, use glass gars (leave some space for liquids to expand), use reusable silicone bags instead of plastic ones - Zip lock bags and sandwich bags -> wax wraps, reusable silicone bags - Cling wrap -> wax wraps, cotton bowl covers - Keeping veggies fresh -> store in a glass jar with water or wrap in a damp cloth For some more resources or in depth instructions: https://treadingmyownpath.com//the-definitive-guide-to-st/ Share with the group what plastic item you can swap :-)

24.01.2022 Day 5 - bulk food shopping I think its fair to say that the place we collect the most plastic from is the grocery shopping. And its often this that is the most difficult to avoid. But there are ways to significantly cut down on plastic - and save some money in the process too! Bulk food shopping is a great way to save of packaging and often save in the money department too. Buying your grains, legumes, flours and fruits and veggies package free can be quite easy - especially ...when there is a bulk food store near you. What you will want to do is: - Collect up some glass or plastic jars from around the house - Weigh and label the jars - Carry them with you to the store! Starting off with things like flour, rice, dried legumes, oats and other cereals will be easiest. These are the things that you want in your diet anyways - most things like pre-packages lollies or bars and crackers aren't always good for you - so not being able to find those package free may not be a bad thing :-) Here are some blog posts for further reading on shopping zero waste Zero Waste Home - https://zerowastehome.com//01/12/zero-waste-grocery-shopp/ Going Zero Waste - https://goingzerowaste.com//2016-3-14-ultimate-guide-to-z/

16.01.2022 Day 2 - watch a plastic film Learn about plastic and its wide spreading impacts.. Documentaries and video are great ways to learn about this issue and motivate your own changes. It is also great to be equipped with background and facts to engage with others. - Find a documentary or youtube video ... - Watch and engage! Simple as that :-) Recommendations - A plastic ocean - The story of stuff on YouTube

16.01.2022 Day 4 - make a zero waste kit When you are out and about - in order to avoid single use plastics as much as possible, its important to be prepared. Have a think about all the plastic you might use if you go out...... - Plastic drink bottle - Plastic straws - Takeaway containers - Throw-away coffee cups - Plastic produce bags and shopping bags Always remember that using what you have already is much better than going out and buying new products in order to waste less - its kind of counter productive! Instructions for today's challenge 1. Brainstorm all the waste you might come across when going out 2. Find alternatives for those around your house 3. Make a reminder on your phone or put together a package to keep in your bag when you go out :-) Here are some alternatives to common items Takeaway containers - Tupperware containers (we all have some in a container somewhere!) Single use plastic bottles - reusable drink bottle Plastic straws - your mouth, or reusable straws Take away coffee cups - a mug, a reusable coffee cup Plastic cutlery - cutlery from the draw! Plastic produce bags and shopping bags - reusable cotton bags or upcycled bags

08.01.2022 Day 3 - zero waste cleaning! Cleaning can be a plastic, money and resource intensive activity - but look no further, bicarb and vinegar is here! That's it, you can clean most things very effectively with simply bicarb soda and vinegar. This is low waste, low cost and much healthier for you and the planet than other cleaning products. ... There are plenty of other recipes around the internet so today have a look around and give it a go! You could even try d.i.y-ing some beauty products like deodorant or some lip balm - have some fun with it! Here are some resources to get you started! 08.01.2022 Day 1 Plastic Free July Challenge! - Plastic Audit Knowing where plastic is creeping into your life is the first step in reducing it. 01.01.2022 I hope you have enjoyed the 7 day introduction challenge for Plastic Free July! For our last day I would like for you to take a moment to reflect on the things that you can change in your life to reduce your plastic usage. Actions for today:... - Choose 3 -5 (or more!) single use plastic items to swap for re-usable versions. (The list you made on day one will come in handy here) - Sign up to plastic free July if you haven't already - Have a reflection about what things are holding you back from reducing plastic (e.g. Eating out, friends not being on board, lack of time etc.) and think about ways you can mitigate those (e.g. Having more conversations with friends, having a zero waste kit for eating out and saving time, starting with some items that are easy to transition etc.) - if you can, share something you have learnt and/or some plastic swaps you are making to encourage others to reduce their plastic impact! Tips - Slow and steady wins the race - Doing something imperfectly is better than not doing anything in fear of not getting it right - Use what you already have! Wishing you luck on your plastic free journey! :-) More resources https://goingzerowaste.com//the-ultimate-list-of-zero-was/ https://treadingmyownpath.com/2019//27/waste-free-bathroom/
