23.01.2022 While the Cronulla foreshore is usually clean and picturesque, due to large swells there is A LOT of plastic and other rubbish mostly at the tide line. Without action this rubbish will head back out to sea (and we know what happens then...) It was great this morning to join in a cleanup of Wanda (Gate 8) with Body Surfing Champions Bate Bay Body Bashers in just 10min we were able to fill a large bucket with all sorts of plastic pollution that otherwise wouldve gone back out to sea. If youre heading down to the beach and see rubbish, know that your little action can make a big difference www.plasticfreecronulla.com.au

15.01.2022 Single use coffee cups lids Its often quite hard to know the difference between a virgin plastic lid and its compostable, plant based alternative. This is especially true when ordering compostable coffee cups, you would assume you would also receive the compostable lid counterpart right? Well with the vast array of different options on the market and a whole heap of green washing, confusion is easy, so this isnt always the case! Quite often we find businesses unaw...are that the lid they are serving with their compostable cups is in fact made from Polystyrene, a toxic material derived from petroleum. How can you tell?? The lid will have the symbol, the number 6 or PS written on it. Styrene (a component of polystyrene) is a harmful chemical that can leech into food and drink when heated. Thankfully, alternatives are available: 1. BYO and reusables - tell your friends, tell your fam, let them know that single use is no longer acceptable 2. Go lidless for the sea- does your hot drink or smoothie really need a lid? Encourage your staff to ask this question with every beverage sold 3. Choose the home compostable bagasse lid (a by product of the sugarcane process). A favourite of ours is made by our friends at Greenmark (Pac Trading Packaging) Head to www.plasticfreecronulla.com.au for more info as to how to transition your business away from single-use plastic products CREDIT : Plastic Free Byron #plasticfree #plasticfreecronulla

06.01.2022 May your day be merry and bright.
06.01.2022 We challenge you to try quitting single-use plastics for a week (or longer if you like a challenge). It may not always be possible and may take some getting used to, but youll probably be amazed at how much personal waste youll cut down and how quickly youll adapt to this new way of doing things. Here are five things you can consider to get started: 1. Give up plastic bags. Take your own bags or buy reusable bags for your shopping. Some retailers also offer recycled card...board boxes for customers to use. Cardboard breaks down far easier than plastic, so this is a great option if you forget your reusable bags. 2. Skip straws. Australians use about 10 million straws every day, or 3.5 billion a year. Most are used just once - for around 15-30 minutes, after which they are thrown away! If you are a regular straw user because you need a straw then look for a reusable option that works for you. 3. Pass up plastic bottles. Nearly a million plastic beverage bottles are sold every minute so it's time to invest in a refillable water bottle if you haven't already. 4. Recycle what you can. Did you know the first level of sorting at recycling stations is done by hand? Keep plastic bags out of your home recycling - plastic bags can cause big problems when placed in your kerbside recycling bin. 5. Dont litter. Littered drink containers make up the largest proportion of litter volume in NSW almost twice the volume of the next largest category, takeaway food containers and coffee cups.
